    CIA Factbook World Atlas Home Geography Home Page Afghanistan Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Afghanistan was invaded and occupied by the Soviet Union in 1979. The USSR was forced to withdraw 10 years later by anti-communist mujahidin forces supplied and trained by the US, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and others. Fighting subsequently continued among the various mujahidin factions, but the fundamentalist Islamic Taliban movement has been able to seize most of the country. In addition to the continuing civil strife, the country suffers from enormous poverty, a crumbling infrastructure, and widespread live mines.     About Daniel Schwartz Daniel Schwartz (Swiss, born 1955) joined Lookat in 1997 and is based in Zurich, where he is a regular contributor to "du" magazine. From 1987 to 1988 he became the first foreigner to travel the entire length of the Great Wall of China, an eight-month forbidden journey that resulted in a much-acclaimed book, published in a new and enlarged edition in 2001. Schwartz's second book Delta, published 1997, covers ecological and political issues in Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia and Vietnam.     INTRODUCTION
    Background: Afghanistan was invaded and occupied by the Soviet Union in 1979. The USSR was forced to withdraw 10 years later by anti-communist mujahidin forces supplied and trained by the US, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and others. Fighting subsequently continued among the various mujahidin factions, but the fundamentalist Islamic Taliban movement has been able to seize most of the country. In addition to the continuing civil strife, the country suffers from enormous poverty, a crumbling infrastructure, and widespread live mines.
