This event is a highly academic statewide high school tournament inaugurated in 1986. The districts are placed in three divisions based on the FTE summary provided by the Florida Department of Education. Each team consists of six members (a maximum of four players during each of the three rounds and two alternates) and a coach. A maximum of six teams may compete in one competition round. This is not a quick response, trivial pursuit contest. Instead, it is a slower-paced tournament in which players are asked questions from the areas of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, the fine arts, foreign language (French and Spanish) and technology. The questions are written by educators from high schools throughout the state. The Panasonic Academic Challenge is a highly academic national high school competition modeled after Florida's statewide tournament. Each team consists of six students (four players and two alternates) and one coach. As many as six teams may compete against each other in one competition. This is not a quick response, trivial pursuit contest. Instead, it is a slower-paced tournament in which players are asked questions from the areas of mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, the fine arts, foreign language (French and Spanish) and technology. The questions are written by educators from high schools and colleges throughout the nation.

    The William Lowell Putnam Examination
This is one of the nation's most difficult and prestigious mathematics competitions. It brings undergraduate mathematics students from across the nation together to struggle with challenging math problems during a six-hour examination. Sponsored by Harvard University and held every year since the 1930s, the competition offers cash prizes and high recognition for the top scorers. But just being a participant is a great experience. The "exam" consists of two, three-hour tests (problem sets) given to students on a December Saturday morning and afternoon. It is open to any college student in the United States or Canada and to exceptional high school students. Scoring is based on technical ability and originality. Scholarships are awarded to the five highest-scoring teams and individuals, with the five highest ranked individual participants designated as Putnam Fellows by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The Putnam Exam requires rigorous academic preparation on the part of the participating students, with guidance from the coordinating professor. But, the experience

Provides details on competitions and activities available to Australian children ONE OF our members, Maria Jenkins, compiled for Gifted the original list of academic competitions, particularly for students with a mathematics interest. Additions in a similar format with appropriate contact details to complete, broaden and update this list are invited Where both age and school year eligibility is listed this generally indicates (unless otherwise indicated) that either age or school year requirements need to be met. Most competitions will accept talented younger students; it is the upper age limit that cannot be exceeded, that is the older students are not allowed to compete with the younger age cohort. Sometimes further restrictions may apply, for example a 15-year-old that has started his university studies cannot compete in any International Olympiad, even though the upper age limit may be 20. Maria compiled this list the hard way to support her child's homeschooling. Details of many of the competitions are sent only to schools to minimise the organisers' workload, but some may accept registered home-schoolers. If your child is enrolled at a school, that would be an appropriate first point of contact. But for home-schoolers and where school contact proves fruitless, Maria has provided contact details for the major competitions and has offered to respond to initial inquiries for many of the less well-known competitions. The contact details for the various inquiry points are listed at the end of the list of competitions.
