Florence Simpson Academic Competitions Coordinator The goal of academic competition is to provide a competitive outlet for our students who are particularly talented or interested in a certain area or subject. Academic competition motivates students through intellectual growth and helps them develop a sense of pride in themselves and in their school. Teamwork and cooperative learning are encouraged and promoted. This outlet also provides students with an opportunity for extending the knowledge and skills they have acquired through their curriculum subject matter. All competitions abide by "UIL" academic rules. Yale College Bowl Activities
Yale Student Academic Competitions (YSAC), Yale's quiz bowl team, practices every Monday and Wednesday in Linsley-Chittenden Hall, Room 104. Practices generally last from 9:00 to 11:00 and newcomers are always welcome to attend. Practices are like Jeopardy in some respects, with players using a buzzer system to ring and answer questions on a wide range of academic and pop culture related topics. Quiz bowl questions tend to cover subjects in more depth however, and thankfully do not require one to phrase his response in the form of a question. For several years, Yale lacked a quiz bowl team on the intercollegiate level. Starting in 1994, Yale resumed competing in tournaments at other schools and we now regularly attend several events each semester. In recent years, YSAC has established itself as one of the stronger teams on the quiz bowl circuit. Last year, our freshmen were Division II champions at NAQT's ICT in North Carolina, and in 2000 our team won first place Penn Bowl, the nation's largest packet submission tournament. In addition to attending tournaments, YSAC also hosts several events on both the college and high school level, most notably the Fall Academic Tournament (for Connecticut high schools), Bulldogs Over Broadway (an intercollegiate event) and the Bulldog High School Academic Tournament, one of the largest high school quiz bowl events in the country.

Grants for Research in Broadcasting
The National Association of Broadcasters' program of giving Grants for Research in Broadcasting is intended to stimulate interest in broadcast research, especially research on economic, business, social or policy issues of importance to the U.S. commercial broadcast industry. The grants provide an opportunity for academic researchers to have an impact on the industry. The agenda for the research is not simply to explore the relationship between broadcasting and the public, but also to create and maintain competitive and efficient industry structures and practices. The competition is open to all full-time academic personnel, graduate students, senior undergraduates are also invited to submit proposals by January 27, 2003. NAB typically awards 4-6 grants totaling $25,000. Monies cannot be used for overhead or benefits. This year's winners will be notified by April 1, 2003. Final projects are due one year from award date. For more details and the application form, visit

Milt Gossett Advertising Workshop
The Milt Gossett Advertising Workshop introduces advertising and liberal arts college students with demonstrated talent and interest to the world of advertising. Through visits to agencies of various sizes, the students are exposed to the range of approaches, different creative and management philosophies and actual functioning of the agencies to enhance the students' understanding of the advertising and creative process.
About the Workshop
Six college students who show outstanding talent in their completed assignments will be invited to New York City in the spring for an all-expenses-paid, two-and-a-half day trip, including travel, hotel and meals, where they will meet with top executives at some of New York's most influential advertising agencies.
Students will be given the opportunity to see how top creative teams and management approach creative problems, work with clients and convince clients that their creative work will perform effectively in the marketplace. They will tour agency facilities and discuss creative concepts and the advertising business. They will meet the leaders of the industry and get a private glimpse into the heart of advertising.
Three participating schools will each send one professor and two student representatives selected by their professor for an early April visit to New York City.
