    Extractions: David Lynch (et de loin) est l'un des plus beaux films du monde mais c'est surtout l'un des plus bouleversants. C'est pour l'instant (en attendant The Straight Story), le film le plus émouvant de Lynch, le plus riche aussi, le plus intelligent, le plus passionnant, le plus tout. C'est la synthèse et l'apogée du style qu'il avait inauguré avec Blue Velvet. Lost Highway n'étant que les restes (flamboyants mais nettement moins bons) de cette folie créatrice tétanisante. Il est important de noter que j'ai vu et adoré ce film (3 visions en une seule semaine) AVANT d'avoir suivi la série Twin Peaks D'un strict point de vue de la mise en scène, c'est le film le plus aboutit et le plus maîtrisé de Lynch. Juste là où il faut entre le classicisme d'Elephant Man et le n'importe quoi de Lost Highway. Travail incroyable sur le montage, cadrages et lumières (pas de problème les stroboscopes sont toujours là) magnifiques. Et puis surtout la bande son ! Entre la musique sublime de Badalamenti et les effets sonores incroyables de Lynch himself, la bande son est primordiale dans la réussite du film. Il faudrait aussi louer l'interprétation. Sheryl Lee...

The Mexican director had a huge hit with Amores Perros and is sure to get the latest film a lot of hype, particularly as it will also star Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn. The film 21 Grams will look at the emotionally stimulating existences of a woman, a former prisoner and the woman's cheating lover. Watts is used to playing a tough role though and also working with a maverick filmmaker as she worked with David Lynch on Mulholland Drive,/ an experience which left its mark on the actress, “Everybody says he’s an ordinary guy, he’s just an all American bloke – he’s not! He’s a very different guy and his movies and paintings show us that, he has an extraordinary mind. But that’s what’s great about him and I love that, he gets people, he knows the human condition - that we’re a complete mixture of contrasting emotions good and bad. I couldn’t believe this person who was looking to hire somebody was taking such an interest in me as a human being. It wasn’t sexual, or like that, but it did feel intense. He wants to find out who you are.” Working with Lynch has raised the stakes for the rest of her career it seems, “It was amazing, it’s going to be difficult from this point forward. I think I’ve been spoilt by his genius, and his way of thinking and humour. Just being around him is a really great experience. He brings out the best in you, and the best doesn’t have to be good, it can be the dark side too.”

    Extractions: December 3, 1999: The newest from Austin's hard rock quartet Soak reverberates consistently throughout, which is no mean feat considering Soak used a handful of studios across the state to record 's 12 tracks. Opener "People Don't Care" is a woofer fest, the modern rock radio-friendly "Place Your Hands" rolls with an urgent Front 242ish chorus, the title track wraps electronica in a full Metallica jacket, the grisly "In Balance" describes the deadly aftermath of a car wreck, and "Hot Rod Novocaine" is as catchy as it is syncopated. As with all modern rock, there are an equal number of toss-offs, too: the obliquely worded, power singalong, "We Drink Till the Sunrise," destined to be a fratboy/tallboy call to arms, and the meandering closer "Backtrack" standing out in particular. With angular pop sensibility and melodies that burrow into your head for better or worse Soak's crisply recorded third full-length is a solid 40-minute fist-shaker rendered disposable by its dread lack of originality.
