Extractions: Of the many creatures that live in the forest, the friendliest are Wicket, a young scout, and his friends Princess Kneesaa, Latara, Teebo, and Paploo. They live in a world filled with magical creatures. Some are good friends to the Ewoks, others are troublesome. When any of the Ewoks gets into a scrape, they all band together to help each other out. The Sunstar Shadow Stone, a legendary gem with magical powers of good and evil, was once in the possession of the Ewoks. It was made up of two connected gems: the Sunstar, possessing the powers of goodness, and the Shadow Stone, possessing the power of evil. Morag the Tulgah witch craved the great power the stone could bring her, and stole it. One day while collecting sunberries, fruit that the Ewoks eat, Wicket and Kneesaa encounter a flying Mantigrue (a dragon-like bird). The Mantigrue is a known slave of Morag; it flies down and threatens the sunberry bushes. To protect the sunberries, the Ewoks paint the bushes with the suds of a magical soap, made by Logray the medicine man, which makes anything it touches invisible.

The first three parts to the Jedi Epic that we were shown. The last three parts to the overall story. Star Wars written by George Lucas. It was his brainchild. His fantasy epic set in space to tell the tale of good versus evil in a space-set cowboy movie for everyone. It has borne a generation who loved the characters of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia and the unforgettable droids, R2-D2 and C3PO. Brought up on this set of three films by fanatical parents, I enjoyed the re-release of the digitally-enhanced versions at the cinema. I realised then how they must have felt watching the dogfights and the fantastic screen presences. Star Wars the book is everything you expect from Lucas. His writing is tight. There isn't a word or sentence that doesn't need to be there. No padding out or glorifying the story with long-word embellishments.

In the early '90s, Lucas produced educational laserdiscs - then stopped when CD-ROM came along. In 1986, he sold his animation start-up, Pixar, to Steve Jobs. His latest software venture once again combines his long-time interests in technology and education. But it's the ripeness of the gaming market that may make the difference for Lucas Learning. One of the first people hired at the year-old educational CD-ROM company was Susan Schilling , 10-year veteran of the educational software business. A former employee at educational game maker MECC , Susan doesn't believe in math drills disguised as games. "'Educational' in this context is defined as open-ended, exploratory environments that are more immersive than directive," says the new general manager. That's why some of her favorite titles are Where in the World Is Carmen San Diego?, SimCity, and Oregon Trail. While Schilling brings her proven experience, there's another reason Lucas Learning can compete over the long haul. "There's a lot of security in knowing that we're working with proven properties," says one staffer. The company's stable of licensed characters can boost sales in the tough market of homes and schoolrooms.

The first made song scores an acceptable alternative to symphonic orchestrations; the second presented a simple action scenario bolstered by amazing special effects. Both were tremendously successful, the latter the first film to top $200 million at the box office. Lucas then formed Lucasfilm (which has since become a business conglomerate) and produced two further installments of the Star Wars tale, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). In both films he promoted a special effects-driven aesthetic through the formation of Industrial Light and Magic, a company that produces state-of-the-art effects for films. He produced the Indiana Jones trilogy, which mixed spectacular stunt work with a seriallike content of inescapable traps from which the stalwart hero escapes. He has also provided financial sponsorship for more traditional work, such as Akira Kurosawa 's Ran (1985). In 1987 he won a special Academy Award for lifetime achievement.
