Extractions: The passage v1. Just as we have formal ways of introducing letters, so in the first Century there was a common letter form. Paul's letter to the Thessalonians follows this accepted form, demonstrating that it is in fact a letter and not just a theological treatise. Paul begins by telling us who it's from and who it's too, and then he greets his readers. Usually the Greeks just wrote the word "greeting", although Paul writes "grace". The word "grace" is derived from the Greek word, but is used here to sum up the gospel. "Grace" depicts God's total acceptance of the believer apart from their worthiness or unworthiness, and this a gift for the asking. The word "peace" is the common Jewish greeting. It means not so much a freedom from trouble, but more a wish for prosperity, wholeness. v2-3. Paul affirms that the Thessalonian church is central in his prayers, although he is not saying that each time he prays they are mentioned. In his prayers he brings before the Lord three qualities in the church for which he gives thanks. i] "Your work of faith". Paul gives thanks for their "active/effective faith" - for the business side of their faith, the doing of it, the practice of faith.

Extractions: Part 1 A moment of time has its qualities, whether it is the moment of a human birth or the moment of the crystallization of a problem, as in horary. The analysis and interpretation of that moment is our art, and shows the interrelationship and oneness of the universe, for astrology is the comparison of heavenly positions with events on earth. From our analysis, if we are good horary astrologers, we should be able to predict the possible outcome of a situation. Not many people believe we can predict, to the general public this is an amusing idea, a sort of parlor game. Indeed, many contemporary 'astro-psychologists' in their hearts do not believe it either, because they have never learnt how to do it themselves. In these articles I will discuss the techniques and methods written down and explained to us by our prede-cessors, who, although they lived at a time of different technology, had the patience to observe and discover many facts of astrology that have been almost lost today. There are, of course, some contemporary 'astrologers' who presume they know better than astrologers of previous generations, and there are those who, without realizing it, base their knowledge on no writer before the twentieth century, relying on a system that has no root or foundation, one that has, to a large extent, been 'invented' by some would-be astro-psychologist to attract notice or financially rewarding clients. Americans have been fortunate in that they have had the books of Ivy Goldstein Jacobson, who kept horary astrology alive during the twentieth century, but admirable though she is, her astrology by her own admission is 'simplified'. More than three hundred years ago William Lilly pro-duced his great masterpiece, the first astrology book in the English lan-guage, Christian Astrology, in 1647. Lilly translated directly from the Latin, incorporating the information from over three hundred great as-trological works of the past. By Mrs. Jacobson's time much of that infor-mation had been watered down. It is not that it is wrong, but it has lost much of the wealth of detail and added dimensions that early writers sup-ply. Astrology must be nearly as old as humanity; we have history from Chaldea, Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Arabs and Jews, and then its arrival back in Europe with Bonatus in the 13th century. There is a wealth of research to be done.

Whilst the organisers put in a huge effort in to the whole fundraising campaign, one organiser (known as '*ull*' by his peers) in particular was richly rewarded by an invitation to the Commerce Ball by an extremely senior member of the Executive Committee in UCC ! A Flag Day, held on Wednesday 18th November, was a great success with 100 collectors, all decked out in white Sail Chernobyl t-shirts, bombarding the college in an effort to collect as much money as possible from both staff and students. Ten of the major student pubs around the city supported Sail Chernobyl by sponsoring an advertising space on the front of each t-shirt. All clubs, most societies, The Students Union and The Societies Guild also contributed to the fund.

I do have a specific reason for sending you this letter and that reason is somewhat in the nature of a complaint. However, I'm going to have to ask that you wade through a couple of pages before I get to my point. I have been, since 1972, a parishioner of the Toronto Church of Scientology. My faith is characterized, more often than no, as one of the "new" religions. It has been my experience that few of the people I meet know much about it. For that reason, I am sending a book on the subject. Approximately two years ago, a man named William Hagglund began to conduct a series of "demonstrations" against my church and my religion. Mr. Hagglund is usually accompanied by two other individuals during these exercises. However, it has been obvious from the beginning that Mr. Hagglund is their de facto "leader". Although neither Mr. Hagglund nor any of his regular supporters has had any previous contact with my religion, they have adopted a manner of behaviour towards the subject and its practitioners which is, in my opinion, very bizarre and very antagonistic.

Extractions: Thu, 1 Aug 2002 I find a few moments to write not because it is something that I even have the time to do, but more because if I don't write now, I am afraid to lose the precious, tragic stories and sights I have witnessed in the last few weeks. During the past weeks I lay down to sleep between 2-4 a.m. to the sounds of tanks clunking over the pavement, sporadic shooting - noises of the night that Palestinian ears can distinguish in the flash of a moment and a mind bursting with thoughts, scenes and stories that keep me from unconsciousness even longer. The morning begins with laughter as a friend tells me that he likes to watch Tom and Jerry because it makes him smile. "Why do people watch Rambo? We see that everyday?here it is not TV, it is real." When Internationals first arrive they are often baffled by the military machinery waging this war, but the novelty wears off so very quickly; loss of appreciation frequently goes hand in hand with habit, routine and repetition. Today alone, I saw over 15 tanks, 7 apcs, a number of jeeps, 30+ soldiers armed with M-16's and a Land Rover full of commandos. This is life here. Children 2-3 years old know the words for soldier, tank, shooting, prison, and death; slowly and surely war creeps into their beings. The children play "war" frequently. One mother told me the other day?"The terribly sad thing is that they always want to be the Israelis, no one wants to be Palestinian, to be controlled, to be the victim. These little children know who has power." Another woman tells me of her discussion with a group of children about life, saying that first children talked about problems they are having?not sleeping, nightmares, constant fear?but then the conversation turned toward dreams and desires. In the midst of talk about parks, toys, and summer camp one girl raised her hand and said: "We need some milk and bread." Despite their disturbing loss of innocence, children still manage to help me leave the mental space of many difficult realities; by playing with my hair, laughing at my Arabic, or simply sitting on my lap, they help me continually find healing, rejuvenation a! nd great hope.

Some pass the time by dreaming of a better day, some by deadening the pain of reality by alcohol or drugs, still others give up on today and tomorrow and commit suicide. Many have never found something to really live for. But if salvation through Jesus Christ means anything, it means hope for mankind and hope for tomorrow. This is the hope that we have to offer a world which is lost and wandering aimlessly. It was this same hope that Paul had a passion to proclaim, no matter what the cost. For the purpose of this paper, the Mount Hope area is every place that you could get from to MT Hope closer than Woodville or Town Bluff to trade. The men rode there by horse and sometimes wagon, if they had a lot of feed and seed to buy. Mont Hope was the place they did their trading. Women seldom went to town, and neither did children, unless they were very close in. Women and children from outlying areas might not see MT Hope or later, Chester, a few times a year. For the women and children, going to Woodville or Town Bluff would be like going to Dallas today. It took half a day to walk to Mount Hope from the nearby places, such as MT Zion. Masons who went to the meeting of the lodge went on the Saturday at 2:00p.m. following the full moon, so that they could ride the horse by moonlight on the way home. That way, it would not be as dark as it might have been through the thick virgin forest before the first timber was cut for commercial purposes. Mount Hope is one of the earliest settled places in the Menard District, that was later named Tyler County when Texas became a state. Mount Hope was a major place for trade, the stage coach stop and later the railroad. Today, when looking for Mount Hope, look on the map where Chester, the town built later, is. Chester was just a few miles away, as was Peach Tree.

I am honored to be here for Barclay Colleges graduation ceremony and back in Haviland, a community I represented for four years in the State Senate and now in the United States Congress. Being here today brings back memories of my own graduation more years ago than I wish to remember. I recall my graduation as a day of mixed emotions. An odd experience filled with both anticipation and sadness, celebrating my graduation while simultaneously wondering what new things lay before me. The real journey of my life was about to begin. And now too, so will yours. Like most of you, I hoped that our commencement speaker might provide some insightful commentary on the world and my role in it. The debate over the proper relations between the state and the artist, between the realms of the public and the private, continues unabated. Book Review invited Rich to explain why she refused the presidential honor. The invitation from the White House came by telephone on July 3, just before the national holiday, a time of public contention about the relationship of government to the arts. After several years' erosion of arts funding and hostile propaganda from the religious right and the Republican Congress, the House vote to end the National Endowment for the Arts was looming. That vote would break as news on July 10; my refusal of the National Medal for the Arts would run as a sidebar story in the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle.
