In a recent report, the Carnegie Corporation of New York documented "a quiet crisis" characterized by "a pattern of neglect [stacking] the deck" against the healthy development of a "staggering number" of American children. Our job as advocates is to work against that stacked deck. We must assure that every child has the love and support necessary to grow up to be a healthy and productive adult. NYAS is a safety net for children and young people who have nowhere else to turn. NYAS works for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. NYAS has advocates in most parts of England and Wales, and if a problem can’t be sorted out on the free phone helpline, or through email, we can arrange for a meeting with an advocate. A NYAS advocate is someone trained and experienced in working with children and young people and will only take their instructions from the child or young person with a problem. The service is confidential and nothing will be done or said without the young person’s consent. ( Unless of course, that young person is in serious danger, and even then no action is taken without them knowing) NYAS is unique in the award of the Community Legal Service Charter Mark and has a team, of lawyers who will represent children and young people if the problem can not be resolved in any other way. We have also recently started a legal service specifically for unaccompanied children who are seeking asylum.
