1-0 out of 5 stars A rip-off
I bought this book thinking I would find where to stay and visit on some great tours through Washington. I live here and all of their tours are already well known - I hoped for something different. They talk about spending several days touring Seattle! This is not an adventure for somebody in an RV to make - traffic is terrible. Not at all what I thought or it sounded from editorial reviews.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and not really what the title says
The book is called "A Camping Guide", so I was expecting a guide to camping, campgrounds, etc. Well, it's more like a suggested trip guide with very little (5 lines) information per campground. Also, they list only very few, only those which are on their suggested trips. Even though not a complete loss (the trips are kind of nice), I think the title is completely misleading. Also there are 5 trips for WA, 2 for Oregon, and 1 for BC... very Washington centric. I also don't quite understand why a camp guide needs information about downtown Seattle.... not many people camping there last time I checked. If I want a tourist guide for Seattle, I buy one and there are many better ones. ... Read more

Product Description
A selection of the best contemporary scholarship on William Tyndale.

William Tyndale was the first to translate the full New Testament and half of the Hebrew Scriptures directly from their original languages into English and to see his work produced on the early modern printing press. Born in the late fifteenth century, he was educated at Oxford and began his self-imposed exile in 1524 when he was refused ecclesiastical approval for his work of translation. Regarded as a Lutheran heretic, he eluded capture in Germany and the Low Countries for over ten years while he worked on his translations and produced ten polemical pamphlets and works of exegesis. Eventually arrested, he was condemned and executed outside Brussels.

This collection of essays-based on papers from the Washington International Conference celebrating the 500th anniversary of Tyndale's birth-contains cutting-edge work by some of the world's most established scholars currently working on Tyndale. The essays collected here address Tyndale's hermeneutics and practice as a translator as well as his pastoral concerns; treat his theological interactions with his opponent John Fisher, his disciple John Frith, and his adversary Jacobus Latomus; compare Tyndale's and Sir Thomas More's ideas on friars, Turks, and impending death; examine the role of Thomas Cardinal Wolsey in Tyndale's world and in Tyndale's works; compare Tyndale's efforts with those of John Skelton in calling for church reform; and consider how Tyndale's ideas echo in Shakespeare.

The essays make fresh linguistic, historical, and theological contributions to Tyndale studies and give theoretical or practical readings of his lesser-known compositions. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of the literature, history, and theology of the Reformation in England during the sixteenth century, as well as to those interested in Tyndale himself, Sir Thomas More, and the Bible in English.

John T. Day is professor of English at St. Olaf College. Eric Lund is professor and chair of the department of religion at St. Olaf College. Anne M. O'Donnell, S.N.D., is associate professor of English at The Catholic University of America.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Scholarly" denigration of William Tyndale
When it was announced that the Catholic University of America Press would publish a portion of William Tyndales works, there was skepticism as to their intent. After all, why would a Catholic press publish the writings of the man who struck such a fatal blow to Papal power in Europe; and who provided the world with the English Bible, which the Papacy had tried to prevent by tortures and murders? A review of Word, Church, and State edited by Anne M. ODonnell, S.N.D. (Sisters of Notre Dame) shows this skepticism was well founded.

The book is 343 pages and consists of papers presented in Washington, D.C. at a Tyndale conference convened by Miss ODonnell in 1994. Of the 30 papers presented at the conference, 20 were selected, and then edited for publication by Miss ODonnell and two scholars she selected.

In the books introduction, Miss ODonnell gives an overview of the books contents. Here the reader is informed that the papers selected will provide the reader with a scholarly review of various aspects of William Tyndales writings. The papers are presented as taking the reader to the grammatical depths, the theoretical heightsand finally to the aphoristic levels where we breathe more easily. We read comments such as McCutcheon sensitively contrasts the thirteen letters of More and Tyndale, and with this thorough assessment of Tyndales opinions on English foreign policy. In fact, the papers, for the most part, are neither thorough nor sensitive. As Biblical scholars have developed the Documentary Hypothesis to tear down the Word of God, so Miss ODonnell has denigrated the writings of William Tyndale under the guise of scholarism.

The only valuable paper this reviewer found was the first paper by Mr. David Daniell and Mr. Daniells writings can be found elsewhere. By the time the reader finishes the book he will have been told that Mr. Tyndales writings are arrogant; that his arguments for providing the English Bible are hypocritical; that Mr. Tyndale made himself a mediator between God and man; that his doctrine is contradictory; that he was completely ignorant of English foreign policy; and that there are gaps and inconsistencies between Tyndales theory and practice. Not surprisingly, Mr. Tyndales view that the Pope is the antichrist is denigrated. Tyndales translation of the word ecclesia as congregation and his theological position on the bread and wine are undermined with sophistry. Finally , we are told that Tyndale regularly appropriated [plagiarized] the words of others &c.

This reader is left with the conclusion that the little praise Tyndale receives is feigned to appear as though the scholars are fair in their treatment of Tyndale. If you enjoy the writings of William Tyndale, save your money for writers such as Mr. David Daniell. ... Read more
