Built by the State of California and dedicated in April of 1993, the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology (GIVI) conducts a full range of basic and clinical research on HIV and AIDS. GIVI is located on the San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) campus of the University of California. SFGH has a long and rich history of excellence in HIV clinical research which facilitates the basic research mission of GIVI. The Institute is currently comprised of approximately 90 members distributed between five investigator and two core laboratories. Each GIVI investigator holds a faculty appointment within UCSF and participates in a wide range of university activities including the Program in Biological Sciences (PIBS) and Biomedical Sciences (BMS) graduate student programs. GIVI has also partnered with UCSF to form the federally sponsored UCSF-GIVI Center for AIDS Research which is co-directed by Drs. Warner Greene and Paul Volberding.

Abortive Infection: When a virus infects a cell (or host), but cannot complete the full replication cycle, i.e. a non-productive infection. 'Arboviruses': A large a diverse group of viruses, taxonomically unrelated which are classically transmitted by arthropod vectors, e.g. mosquitoes, ticks, etc. Assembly: The stage of replication during which all the structural components come together at one site in the cell and the basic structure of the virus particle is formed.
