4-0 out of 5 stars Great period book
This book was written near the end of World War 2 by staff of the United Kingdom Ministry of Information, and the information was gleamed from official documents and interviews with the people who actually undertook the task of transporting aircraft from the United States and Canada to various places around the globe. This means that the book was written when the information was still 'current', and the people were interviewed whilst their memories were still fresh. The result is a somewhat short, but nonetheless incredibly interesting book on a little known activity of the war.
The book will be of interest to people who have an interest in World War 2, or an interest in the history of aviation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Flying on the Left
Originally published before VE Day in 1945, this is an account of the birth and growth of RAF's Ferry Command, later incorporated in its Transport Command. At its inception, at a time when there were few pilots and fewer navigators with real overocean experience, and when even Pan Am and Imperial Airways/BOAC avoided the North Atlantic, it ferried Lockheed Hudsons and Consolidated Liberators from Canada to Scotland. In time, South Atlantic and Trans - African routes were added.Better facilities and airplanes, and those core personnel who had gained their experience the hard way and could pass it on, made the operations less hair raising; but never quite routine.
Between Ferry Command, the USAAF Air Transport Command and the U.S. Naval Air Transport Service, transocean flight even in northern reaches would be a daily activity long before VJ Day; and increasingly popular in civil markets not long after.
This is more a pamphlet than a book, but a good addition to any collection dealing with World War Two air transport. It would have been improved by including BOAC's wartime activities. An additional work on these was promised but, so far as I can find, never published. ... Read more

The 15 revised full papers included in the volume document the exploitation of links between logic and category theory leading to a solid basis for much of the understanding of the semantics of computation. Notable amongst other advances is the introduction of linear logic and other substructural logics, providing a new approach to proof theory. Further aspects covered are semantics of lambda calculi and type theories, program specification and development, and domain theory. ... Read more

Product Description
Communicating Process Architecture (CPA) describes an approach to system development that is process-oriented. It makes no great distinction between hardware and software. It has a major root in the theory of Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP). However, the underlying theory is not limited to CSP. The importance of mobility of both channel and process within a network sees integration with ideas from the eth-calculus. Other formalisms are also exploited, such as BSP and MPI. The focus is on sound methods for the engineering of significant concurrent systems, including those that are distributed (across the Internet or within a single chip) and/or software-scheduled on a single execution unit. Traditionally, at CPA, the emphasis has been on theory and practice - developing and applying tools based upon CSP and related theories to build high-integrity systems of significant size. In particular, interest focuses on achieving scalability and security against error. The development of Java, C, and C++, libraries to facilitate secure concurrent programming using 'mainstream' languages has allowed CPA to continue and proliferate. This work continues in support of the engineering of distributed applications. Recently, there has been greater reference to theory and its more direct application to programming systems and languages. In this volume the formal CSP is very well presented. The papers provide a healthy mixture of the academic and commercial, software and hardware, application and infrastructure, which reflects the nature of the discipline. ... Read more
