Product Description
Saparmurat Niyazov, President of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist
Republic of Turkmenistan, died early on 21st December 2006 in a
strange new world of his own creation.
His official title, bestowed on himself, was Turkmenbashi , or
leader of Turkmen .
Coming from a humble orphaned background, he soon worked
his way up through the Communist party, and was eventually
made President of a newly independent Turkmenistan from the
collapsing Soviet Union.
The surreal reality that followed was a twenty-year long
dictatorship, considered one of the hardest in the world, where he
gave his people free salt, electricity and gas - but also the lowest
minimum wage possible.
Even the months of the year were renamed to pay homage to
Niyazov and his family.
By 2001 all internet cafes were closed and ballet and opera
were banned, and in 2004, the state even forbade young men
from growing long hair or beards and it was prohibited for news
readers to wear make-up
LOVE ME Turkmenistan is a vivid, colourful and often very
humorous depiction of a country dominated by the dark shadow
of its ex-leader, with full-technicolour depictions of its capital, its
monuments, and its people, now released from a surreal chapter
in their country s history.
Each vivid image is accompanied by an actual quote from
Niyazov, forming a strong and often outrageous commentary. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Photo essay
This book will certainly appeal to some people, but it really is not a book on Turkmenistan as much as a thrown together photo essay with not much of a narrative. The book is beautifully formatted but surprisingly short. The photos are interesting for five or maybe even ten minutes, but it's certainly not worth the price. ... Excerpt: Saparmyrat Ataýewiç Nyýazow, known in English as Saparmurat Atayevich Niyazov (pronounced ) (Russian : ) (19 February 1940 21 December 2006) was a Turkmen politician who served as President (later President for Life) of Turkmenistan from 2 November 1990 until his death in 2006. He was First Secretary of the Turkmen Communist Party from 1985 until 1991 and continued to lead Turkmenistan for 15 years after independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. His name in English is a romanized of the Russian spelling of his Turkmen name. Turkmen media referred to him using the title "His Excellency Saparmurat Niyazov Türkmenbay, President of Turkmenistan and Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers". His self-given title Türkmenbay, or Turkmenbashi (pronounced ), meaning Leader of Turkmens, referred to his position as the founder and president of the Association of Turkmens of the World. Foreign media criticized him as one of the world's most totalitarian and repressive dictators, highlighting his reputation of imposing his personal eccentricities upon the country, which extended to renaming months after members of his family, and recoining the Turkmen word for bread by the name of his mother. Global Witness, a London-based human rights organization, reported that money under Niyazov's control and held overseas may be in excess of US$3 billion, of which $2 billion is supposedly situated in the Foreign Exchange Reserve Fund at Deutsche Bank in Germany. Niyazov was born in Gypjak, located in the Turkmen SSR. According to the official version, his father died in World War II fighting against Nazi Germ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19760658 ... Product Description

Turkmenistan, an independent nation since 1991, is a strategically important Central Asian state. This book covers the most significant period of the establishment of the Turkmen political regime. At the core of this book is the Doctrine of Positive Neutrality, which, from 1995 onwards, constituted the theoretical backbone for the foreign policy of post-Soviet Turkmenistan. The author analyses the reason and aim of the concept, its significance for and impact on the country’s domestic and foreign relations, its practical implementation and its transformation into a tool of strengthening of absolute personal authority. Furthermore, he establishes whether Positive Neutrality has to be seen as a ‘domestic-oriented’ foreign policy, which has been used by the Turkmen regime to reinforce its internal position. .
This is the first book-length and thorough analysis of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy. It furthers our understanding of Turkmenistan, and provides an informed background for the study of its foreign policy. It fills a void in the current literature, and it will constitute an essential reference for most scholars and researcher focusing on contemporary Central Asia, Russian foreign policy, Foreign Policy, International Relations and Comparative Politics.

Product Description

Caspian Energy Politics analyses the role of oil and gas in the development of the three main petroleum exporters in the Caspian region - Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan - and how energy resources influence interactions with semi-authoritarian Russia and China.

Due to volatile commodity prices and competition for the resources in and around the Caspian Sea, the governments of these petroleum-exporters face a series of difficult decisions. These governments have sought to balance short-term incentives to spend oil revenues as a means to maintain power against the need for a long-term strategy for managing these assets, choices which have further implications for how these countries align themselves internationally. By illuminating important linkages between domestic and international dynamics in these states, the book provides a fresh perspective on energy politics and the impact of petroleum on the development of the Caspian petroleum producers.

Expert contributors from Central Asia and the South Caucasus and international scholars provide context-specific insights into the incentives affecting decision-makers that can provide a foundation for strategies to help the countries in the region overcome the negative effects of reliance on oil and gas. As such, the book will be a valuable tool for business actors seeking to understand the role of Chinese and Russian companies in the region, as well as local and international policymakers and non-governmental organisations.
