4-0 out of 5 stars KidsLearnaboutKillerWaves
What a helpful book this is! You may immediately think that December 26, 2004 made it hopelessly out of date, but NO!

Even the youngest readers will know that "killer waves" are a serious business. It is good for children to have such accessible fonts & graphics for understanding this hard-to-grapple subject. Grandparents will be as grateful as the kids for the large "EasyRead" print . . . and the pronunciation aids in the text & glossarysuit me much better than those the NEA provides to newspapers.

No doubt publishers will be scrambling to print updates of books about TSUNAMIS but students will have been investigating many websites long before any books about the 2004 Indian Ocean disaster get into print. (The U.S. gov's FEMA website, however, is woefully inadequate).

Reviewer mcHAIKU says "Thank goodness kids respond so swiftly & generously to disaster victims. Michele Drohan's book should help all of us agitate for better warning systems."

Product Description

Tsunamis like the Indian Ocean tsunami caused by the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake in 2004 or the Chilean earthquake in the Pacific Ocean in 1960 motivate international collaborations for the development of tsunami warning systems. Since 1960 the Tsunami Commission, established by the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, has been holding a biannual International Tsunami Symposium (ITS).

This volume contains 20 contributions of leading scientists mostly presented at the 22nd International Tsunami Symposium held in summer 2005 in Greece. Consolidated findings based on hydrophone records, seismometer readings, and tide gauges are presented. Reports of post-tsunami surveys and numerical simulations for tsunamis such as the 2004 Indian Ocean event, as well as geological studies of tsunamis in Japan, Central and North America are given. Probabilistic tsunami hazard analysis and tsunami warning systems, among others, are described as methods to predict tsunamis and mitigate their hazards.

Product Description
This review volume is divided into two parts. The first part includes five review papers on various numerical models. Pedersen provides a brief but thorough review of the theoretical background for depth-integrated wave equations, which are employed to simulate tsunami runup. LeVeque and George describe high-resolution finite volume methods for solving the nonlinear shallow water equations. The focus of their discussion is on the applications of these methods to tsunami runup.

In recent years, several advanced 3D numerical models have been introduced to the field of coastal engineering to calculate breaking waves and wave structure interactions. These models are still under development and are at different stages of maturity. Rogers and Dalrymple discuss the Smooth Particles Hydrodynamics (SPH) method, which is a meshless method. Wu and Liu present their Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model for simulating the landslide-generated waves. Finally, Frandsen introduces the lattice Boltzmann method with the consideration of a free surface.

The second part of the review volume contains the descriptions of the benchmark problems with eleven extended abstracts submitted by the workshop participants. All these papers are compared with their numerical results with benchmark solutions.

Contents: Modeling Runup with Depth-Integrated Equation Models (G Pedersen); High-Resolution Finite Volume Methods for the Shallow Water Equations with Bathymetry and Dry States (R J LeVeque & D L George); SPH Modeling of Tsunami Waves (B D Rogers & R A Dalrymple); A Large Eddy Simulation Model for Tsunami and Runup Generated by Landslides (T-R Wu & P L-F Liu); Free-Surface Lattice Boltzmann Modeling in Single Phase Flows (J B Frandsen); Benchmark Problems (P L-F Liu et al.); Tsunami Runup onto a Plane Beach (Z Kowalik et al.); Nonlinear Evolution of Long Waves over a Sloping Beach (U Kâno lu); Amplitude Evolution and Runup of Long Waves, Comparison of Experimental and Numerical Data on a 3D Complex Topography (A C Yalciner et al.); Numerical Simulations of Tsunami Runup onto a Three-Dimensional Beach with Shallow Water Equations (X Wang et al.); 3D Numerical Simulation of Tsunami Runup onto a Complex Beach (T Kakinuma); Evaluating Wave Propagation and Inundation Characteristics of the Most Tsunami Model over a Complex 3D Beach (A Chawla et al.); Tsunami Generation and Runup Due to a 2D Landslide (Z Kowalik et al.); Boussinesq Modeling of Landslide-Generated Waves and Tsunami Runup (O Nwogu); Numerical Simulation of Tsunami Runup onto a Complex Beach with a Boundary-Fitting Cell System (H Yasuda); A 1D Lattice Boltzmann Model Applied to Tsunami Runup onto a Plane Beach (J B Frandsen); A Lagrangian Model Applied to Runup Problems (G Pedersen); Appendix: Phase-Averaged Towed PIV Measurements for Regular Head Waves in a Model Ship Towing Tank (J Longo et al.). ... Product Description

The Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004 is considered to have been one of the worst natural disasters in history, affecting twelve countries, from Indonesia to Somalia. 175,000 people are believed to have lost their lives, almost 50,000 were registered as missing and 1.7 million people were displaced. As well as this horrendous toll on human life, the tsunami destroyed property worth billions of dollars and ruined many local economies. Based on their experience and analysis of this tsunami, the authors have developed methodologies for predicting and preparing for tsunamis. A basis is provided for a cost-effective warning and preparedness strategy, drawing on the example of existing systems used in earthquake disaster management and tidal wave warning, from genesis to impact. The book comprehensively addresses the fundamentals of tsunami science, identifying potential areas where tsunamis might be generated, predicting the anticipated course of tsunamis and considering how the geophysical, ecological and socioeconomic location of a community may determine the severity of tsunami damage. The authors suggest how precursors can be used to enhance the advance warning time, how tsunamis can be detected at the time of their occurrence, and the manner in which warnings should be communicated to the populations likely to be affected. Finally, improvement in eco-sociological resilience through the application of dual-use technologies is identified as a pivotal aid in allowing coastal communities to be better prepared. The book will be of interest to a global audience of professionals and academics active in seismology, ocean science, meteorology, coastal management, earthquake engineering and disaster management.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good general or introductory book
Very well organized and presented.Covers the basics very well with easy to understand terminology. It lacks extensive detail regarding the topics covered....but I think that's the point.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Choice Of Disasters
Furious Earth by Ellen J. Prager [with help from Stanley Williams (Surviving Galeras), Kate Hutton (one of SoCals TV seismologists and the author of the earthquake updates on the TriNet earthquake website), and Costas Synolakis] is a well-written introduction to earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. This book appears to be aimed at junior high/high school aged readers, but adult readers who have no background in these subjects will also enjoy the book.An earlier reviewer suggested that the book has the coverage of the better chapters of an earth science textbook, but I wish high school earth science texts were this well-written.I enjoyed reading the book despite the depth of my background and appreciate the refresher course that Furious Earth gave me.My only complaint concerns the ordering of the color plates at the center of the volume. The pictures are out of order to their mention in the text and the only thing that comes to mind is that they were ordered the way they were to make them fit on a limited number of plate pages.Furious Earth belongs on the shelves in as many elementary and secondary school libraries as possible and would be a wonderful gift for a budding earth scientist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Furious Earth-
I am a sixth grade teacher and was given this book at a scienceconference. After just beginning to read it, I immediatly went online tosee how much the book cost- I want to order one for each for my students! It will be a bit hard and I will have to do some serious directing, but thebook is an excellent example of a clear, scientific, organized, up-to-date,and interesting (yes- interesting enough for 30 sixth graders) nonfictionbook in the field of earth science. Furious Earth combines"PBS-like" research discussions and theory- (Plate TechtonicsDiscovered, Paleotsunamis...) with "RealTV-like" examples (Italy,79 A.D.: Vesuvuis; The World's Largest and Smallest Quakes). The book is asurprisingly suspenseful, fascinating, and easy read (for us unscientificfolk). The 16 color pages of graphs and pictures also add to the subject.I can't wait to see their eyes grow when I read to them Chapter 2-Earthquakes.It starts off with the 1994 Northridge, CA quake... It hookedme at least...

Product Description

The tragedy of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami has led to a rapid expansion in science directed at understanding tsunami and mitigating their hazard. A remarkable cross-section of this research was presented in the session: Tsunami Generation and Hazard, at the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics XXIV General Assembly in Perugia, held in July of 2007. Over one hundred presentations were made at this session, spanning topics ranging from paleotsunami research, to nonlinear shallow-water theory, to tsunami hazard and risk assessment. A selection of this work, along with other contributions from leading tsunami scientists, is published in detail in the 28 papers of this special issue of Pure and Applied Geophysics: Tsunami Science Four Years After the Indian Ocean Tsunami. Part I of this issue includes 14 papers covering the state-of-the-art in tsunami modelling and hazard assessment. Another 14 papers are published in Part II focusing on observations and data analysis.

This digital document is a journal article from Marine and Petroleum Geology, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Deposits from the Storegga tsunami have been found in coastal areas around the Norwegian Sea and North Sea, from the northeast coast of England to beyond the Arctic Circle in northern Norway. The tsunami deposits reach onshore elevations of 10-12m above sea level of their time in western Norway, 3-6m in northeast Scotland and above 20m on the Shetland Islands. These elevations are compared with surface (wave) elevations derived from a numerical simulation of the Storegga slide. A good agreement is obtained for a retrogressive slide that descends at 25-30m/s, and that has short time lags of 15-20s between each individual slide-block. ... Read more
