Product Description
This text, written by best-selling developmental mathematics author Pat McKeague, features a more streamlined review of elementary algebra, allowing for earlier coverage of intermediate topics. An early introduction to graphing presents the foundation for a wide variety of graphing problems throughout the text. Early coverage of functions helps students feel comfortable with the many examples and graphs of functions that occur in later chapters. The first ten chapters of this book cove the topics usually found in a college-level algebra course. The last three chapters cover the essential topics from trigonometry. Optional technology sections and integrated throughout text as a way for students to better understand the material being discussed. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst math book you'll ever see
A very common agreement in my math class between students is how awful this book is. The book chooses to lead every section by 5-10 examples with a few sentences explaining what is going on. What the book fails to do for any topic is go into detail the logic and reasoning behind what we're doing. The book uses the idea that all we need to do is see HOW something is done to learn how it'll be done in a way the book doesn't show us. There are a ton of questions for the reviews and tests that were not even close to any of the examples in the books but yet we are supposed to know how to do things in a different way without ever being explained WHY things are how they are.

There are videos that come with the book but don't bother putting them on your computer. It's NOT video, it's one frame every 5-8 seconds while the audio streams so you INSTANTLY become confused when he's writing something on the board and it freezes.. but yet you hear him explaining further steps without ever seeing it on screen. It's not my computer, it's how they set up the cd.

No one in my class likes this book, I've done all my learning from web sites since chapter 2 because the book is absolutely not written by a math instructor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
An excellent book such as this one deserves praise. I read it, I got it, and I can teach it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I bought this book as a `running start'and refresher for college level math classes. The book was very easy to follow and, as a person who is NOT math savvy in any way, was never fustrated or confused.Thiswas a great book and recommend it to anyone. I would have bought the book new Vs used had I known there were so many opportunities to work the problems in the book. With the problems already worked out the challenge wasn't there BUT was found helpful when I was stuck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Calculus prep - or Precalc review
This particular calculus study guide is clearly oriented for those whom are considering engineering or science related fields as business calculus will have less of a need of geometry and trigonometry. For those whom are interested in engineering/science fields and struggled a bit in geometry or trig, then this text can be a great support to have by your side during your precalc class OR for self-study/review after precalc and before calculus.

Indeed, there are several circumstances in which this self-study text can be used.

1) If you are in precalculus and struggling and wondering what parts are really important for calculus next year/semester.

2) If you took precalculus last year/semester and want a study guide (besides your old textbook) to get ready for Calculus.Indeed, for high school students this may be a great summer book to work through after precalc to assure you're ready for Calculus.

3) If you took precalc many years ago and want a refresher, or even if you took Calculus 1 many years ago and want to review the prerequisites prior to refreshing your calculus.

There is a final chapter on Limits which will be covered in the start of Calculus 1 and which can probably be skipped. There is a stronger emphasis on "focus" and "foci" than in many precalc books so this may make some students think, "Why didn't my teacher cover this?" Also, there's a trig table... just remember the book was originally published in 1975 and so a couple of emphases are now slightly different but overall the value of the text remains high as a supplement.

5-0 out of 5 stars READ HERE FOR DETAILS
This book is excellent. I don't believe that I can find anything wrong with this book.

Some readers are saying that this book has too small of a font, or that the binding is loose, or that the book offers little in explanations to the awnsers for the practice problems. These are simply false. The font is a size twelve by most computer's standard font, if you can't see that small get glasses. If some books are falling apart stop throwing them or bending the spine. The explanation part is true in that the book doesn'tsay things like "the reason this is the awnser is..." However, I feel that the explanation of how geometry works and what it's rules are, is sufficient for the reader to analyse why the awnser is what it is. If you cannot do this it may be adviseable to bring the problem in question to a friend or teacher knowledgeable in geometry (I mean this in the kindest of manners).

Over all the book is clear and quick to the point. Some people may find it a bit dry in that there is no humor really or any stories, strictly instructional. Some may find it difficult to remember things this way or to read a book written in such a manner.

This book is written so that a reader who has no knowledge about geometry can understand it.

Overall a five star book and worth the price and then some.

(Please forgive anything mispelled I didn't have time to check this review.)

1-0 out of 5 stars good as a companion only
If you want to test your knowledge of geometry and trig after reading another text book, this is good. However, this is not a standalone book.It offers problems and answers, but very little in examples and explanations of why.

Unless you want a refresher, I'd go somwhere else, maybe a dummies or idiots guide instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars There aren't enough exercises..
The best and most enjoyable way to learn math is through practice, and although Peter H. Selby articulately explains the concepts presented in this book, there just aren't enough exercises for you to "teach yourself" the subject.A given section on plane geometry will give you about 15 abstract principles followed by 5 easy practice exercises.I have learned from this book, but in order to do so, I've had to make flashcards and do lots and lots of rereading to help me memorize the vocabulary and rules. This book would be okay for someone who just needs a quick refresher, but if you really want to learn the material, I would suggest buying separate 350-400 page books for each subject. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Dolciani's Algebra 2 / Trigonometry
Great book, great price, fast delivery, perfect condition. As a former math teacher who used earlier versions of this book both as both a student and as a teacher, I am thrilled to see it's still available for the next generation of high school algebra students.I plan to use it in my home school math program with my teenager.[...]

The book was clean, and it arrived on time. I am very pleased with the purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great solid math book
I've been looking for a solid algebra 2 book.I first tried some of the more modern textbooks that have been published in the last few years, but was disappointed.I finally found this book and a couple of others published around the same time period.Although, all three were significantly better than the modern books, I thought this one was the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great
I think this book was great and i am just a high school freshman.(...)It is not at the fault of the book if children do not study it becuase if you did in a matter of moments you would undertsand evything, yet they don't it is there lost and no one else's!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, solid math foundation
Mary P. has done it again. I'm a homeschooling Dad with degrees in computer science and mathematics. My dad is a high school math teacher of 30 years experience. Neither of us has ever seen a better treatment for high school of this subject. My daughter was confused by Saxon's methods and explanations, went over to the Dolciani book, and says "Oh, that's how you do it!". Also a more rigorous and in depth treatment than Abeka's Algebra 2. My only complaint/wish was that the computer programming aspects of the exercises were done for C rather than Basic or Pascal, but that's easily fixed by anyone that knows C. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty decent stack of problems
Of course, one can (and should) buy a decent used textbook, which try and explain most of the concepts to you (using algebraic proof derivations, and real-world examples). But textbooks lack something, which is why REA and Schaum's have succeeded as supplements. For example, if you need extra practice on a topic, and your textbook does not give many problems, then Schaum's will have plenty of extra problems for you.But although Schaum's is very thorough, covering every conceivable topic, sub-topic and even rigorous proofs, their solutions are often too succinct, leaving out several steps. This is where REA's Problem Solver comes in.REA solutions are often very long, which is a good sign--it means they are explaining each step!Although athorough understanding of pre-calc algebra and trig is not possible for everyone except the mathematically-inclined, a thorough familiarization and problem-solving skills can be had by:

a) learning the concepts and proofs from textbooks
b) doing as many different problems as possible (textbook + Schaum's)
c) understanding how to do any kind of problem, and understanding the steps (REA)

One commenter said the book does not have much in the way of graphing. However, there are thorough chapters on graphing linear eq's and quadratic eq's as well as conic sections, and plenty of graphs.

This book does not seem to have the Theory of Equations, however, separated as a topic, although it does seem to include some of the root rules in some of the problems. Inverse and Rational functions don't seem to be covered, either. However, these are very small omissions that can be found in your textbook and, considering the scope and depth of this outstanding volume, can be overlooked in regards to total value.

Don't let the old-fashioned courier font put you off; these Problem Solvers are real gems.If you feel weak on understanding how to algebra problems, this will help. In the back are word problems involving coins, investments, work, mixtures, etc.Go to the REA website to see the table of contents.

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful for reference and problem solving technique.
I really like this book. It shows you how to "think" as you are doing the problem and the methodology used to arrive at the problem. I often get textbooks and see the example and it works fine and I can do a problem if its JUST LIKE THAT but then the author gets cute and changes everything about the problem so that it is unrecognizable as the problem you just learned how to solve and then you are stuck again. This problem helps me with stuff like that.

2-0 out of 5 stars despair
after examining this solver ý have come to the conclusion that turkish math solvers for college students are more helpful and comprehensive. Therefore I advise college students of the world to find these books on Turkish on-line booksellers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but not complete
This book is great if you want to brush up on algebraic skills and it involves a step by step process for each solution. It is a great solution guide except for one little flaw: it does not contain much graphing. As I am myself in an algebra class, I know that you must be able to graph many different types of equations, and this book doesn't cover graphing thoroughly. Otherwise, it is a great book and i recommend it for anyone who really needs help in algebra.

4-0 out of 5 stars Companion to the educated and teachers
In order to learn your subject more effectively there are a number of ways to go by products: Buy a software tool with questions, answers and a mathematical engine to calculate interactively for you, step by step with additional graphical representation or run a software tool as Maple 6 or Maple 7 ( a CAS ( Computer Algebra System ) ) or buy a problem solver book in addition to your textbook.

Although Maple is an advanced tool that covers almost all you ever need in education its evaluation techniques differs on major points completely from the way you would do (evaluate for educational purposes) mathematics on paper introducing also a number of programmatic structures which is highly complex because of how Maple evaluates. For instance a function specification in Maple is not a function altogether:what you've learn or have learned in school.

Maple is therefore more or less excluded from eduction in college level mathematics and I would say also in higher eduction since it impose to much time to learn properly and is to error prone to use even after extensive reading of the supplied tutorial at the products website.

Therefore a choice between a learning tool or additional book is to prefer.

The problem solver is a powerful tool for learning since it stresses on focusing from several points of views regarding type problems. It also facilitates a repetitive learning experience.

Each chapter is dedicated to a certain subject area. Back in the index is a complete list of keywords with referenced problem numbers after them.

The Question is immidietly followed by an explanatory answer which solves the problem, sometimes in several different ways.

Read the textbook first then do the stuff in the problem solver. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No problem.
Book was the same as that being sold in the campus bookstore and for less money. Access code for online work site worked fine. We had trouble with another access code, for another book, and Amazon customer service was wonderful. I highly recommend an Amazon purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Detailed!
I bought this book for my university classes and it has been great so far.

Recomended for the people that need to review algebra and go on into the more difficult math.
The only problem is the length of the book. Learning the content in it can be slow but sure to last.

1-0 out of 5 stars Textbook industry: Use 1/3 of book, Respend money for same darn thing
First, I wouldn't say Blitzer's books are as great as hyped...a decent portion of explanation was wordy, convoluted and confusing. I mostly stopped reading the book and only took notes of the teacher's explanations.

I have to disagree about exercise difficulty. Each chapter or section started with easier exercises which increased in difficulty. However, in the 2nd Edition there were quite a few errors in the answers to odd-numbered problems in the back of the book, so if you couldn't arrive at the same answer you wondered if you were really wrong or not! Had to wait until the next class to find out...bad!

My HUGE GRIPE is our college makes a big deal of all teachers (with the exception of ever-changing technology/computer texts) using the same book...but WHAT'S THE POINT? Each book is designed to cover several courses so the textbook publishers can rake in BIG MONEY for their thick book. The next year, they add some different charts and change some problems so you can't get by on your old edition if the college goes to the next one...which the college ALWAYS does, for no benefit...regardless of the errors you must put up with, that are undoubtedly a result of the pressure to constantly "upgrade" the book.

So, you buy a book that is SUPPOSED to cover at least 2 courses, you use less than half of it, then when you take the 2nd course, you have to RE-BUY IT!

In addition, they now market books with CDs using the publisher's own online-course website instead of the schools...which you cannot access unless you buy the new-edition book with THEIR CD. The stupid college uses the publisher's online-course website even if the college's own online-course website is perfectly fine.

So now I have to buy this stupid 3rd edition in addition to my 2nd edition, and I have to get the one with the CD. This is just the publisher's way of forcibly preventing people from recycling textbooks. If I am not allowed into the publisher's course website with a used CD, I am withdrawing from this college and transferring! I'm only at this college to take some courses required to transfer to a top college, anyway. I will GLADLY take them somewhere else!

College deans pay attention...YOU DO NOT HAVE A RIGHT TO DEMAND COLLEGE STUDENTS WASTE THEIR HARD-EARNED MONEY MAKING TEXTBOOK MANUFACTURERS RICH...USE YOUR OWNED DARNED WEBSITES FOR ONLINE COURSES!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This book teaches a real understanding of the concepts, not just memorization or how to enter the data into a calculator.I am returning to college after a 27ish year hiatus, and needless to say, needed some brushing up.

The first text that I attempted to use was given to me by a co-worker and omitted much of the understanding needed to progress.

We, as a nation, need to LEARN again, not memorize, and this book actually teaches!

Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Math Textbook
I used this book for an accelerated Algebra/Trig class at the college level.I found this book to be one the best math books I have ever encountered. When examples are given in the text it goes step by step and for most, explanations of what is being done.Other texts that I've used have skipped steps and left you wondering how did they get from A to Z?

I wasn't always able to make it to class, but the examples and explanations did not loose me and I was able to play catch up successfully on my own with this text.I can't say that about any other math text.

I must agree with the other person who wrote a review and said it would sure be nice if Blitzer had a Calculus text (though Larson is a good Calc author).Calculus would have been a breeze with a Blitzer book instead of a stuggle (had to buy a Larson book to supplement by school's Calc book choice). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Trigonometry Book
Product was delivered when promised. Seller was very nice & kept lines of communication open. Book is exactly the way the seller described.

5-0 out of 5 stars I will be recommended that it be adopted for our course in precalculus
The college where I teach recently dropped a two-course sequence in precalculus in favor of a one-semester course. This of course requires the re-examination of the text to be used for precalculus and it is within that context that I examined this book.
I found it an excellent choice for a textbook for a one-semester class in precalculus. It begins with a quick review of graphs and functions, but then immediately goes to trigonometric functions. The subsequent chapters are:

*) Analytic trigonometry
*) Applications of trigonometric functions
*) Polar coordinates; vectors
*) Analytic geometry
*) Exponential and logarithmic functions

The coverage of these topics is thorough and plenty of exercises with solutions are included. I was also impressed by the use of coloration to catch and direct your attention through the explanations. This is a technique that is sometimes neglected in the development of mathematics texts. I will be recommending this book to the department chair for the text of choice for precalculus.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book for what its worth
The book is very straight forward and simple. I tried learning trigonometry from other sources but found it to difficult to grasp, but this book shows the basics and makes it math understandable to the average person.
I would recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Trigonometry Mystified
If you want trigonometry to seem obscure and impenetrable, you should try this book.
I had exposure to trigonometry before, and this book starts off, on the first page, presenting circular graphics and how trigonometric functions fit within them. This is something the author should have reached after introducing triangle types, defining sin, cosine and tangents, and the different basic formulas. Then we could understand how the circular graphics presentation is the next logical step in using trigonometry. But no, he starts off with this, with no explanation as to why or how he got there.Keep in mind this book is supposed to be an introductory book, that DEMYSTIFIES trigonometry.I was angry I spent the money on it without sitting down and really going through it first. The other reviewers are correct that he presents a lot of problems to solve without explanation of how they are derived or how to solve them.

This author has written better books than this, such as on Electronics.I don't understand how he could have forgotten who his audience was that he was writing for, beginning math students who are confused by trigonometry. This book does nothing to demystify (or even explain) trigonometry. In fact, your college textbook is a better start, because at least it lays out the concepts one at a time, in order, before proceeding to more complex concepts, unlike this one.I don't think his editor did his job on this book, putting it in order.
This review is actually mild compared to the frustration I felt in trying to get some value on the money I spent for this book.Don't judge a book by its cover; or its title.

5-0 out of 5 stars Contrarian View
This book was my "aha!" experience for trigonometry. The author started off using circle functions instead of triangle relationships as a way to explain sine, cosine, etc. This made immediate sense to me; from there, it was easy to understand why each is positive or negative in the various quadrants, why sin^2 + cos^2=1, etc.Why all trig courses aren't taught this way is a mystery.
No doubt there are some shortcomings to this book. However, if you want to quickly develop a strong intuitive understanding of trigonometry, this is an excellent purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst math author ever.
This individual,Stan Gibilisco, continues to write book after book despite his inability to write a math book.

The first book of his that I purchased, Technical Math, was so badly written that it was totally useless.I swore that I would never buy another book by this author.

I evidently forgot his name until I purchased this book. However after starting the first chapter and not believing a math book could be so badly written, his name hit me.

This time fortunately I was able to return the book.

Evidently publishers do not read readers reviews.Or maybe they don't care because some poor sap, that is not familiar with the author, will purchase his book.If they did care, they wouldn't hire him for another book.
Some of the subjects sound really interesing until you see who the auther is and then you know to forget it....

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much missing
Like another reveiwer, I also was very pleased with the Algebra Demystified book.As a long-time math disaster, I was able to test out of remedial Math and start College Algebra with a good foundation as a direct result of Albegra Demystified. After taking College Algebra, I returned to the Demystified Series to ramp me up on Trigonometry.I found that the author simply fails to explain his steps adequately. He makes too many assumptions about knowledge the student will possess. In fact, fresh out of College Algebra with a respectable high B, I was non-plussed after the earliest pages of Trigonometry Demystified, and actually found myself referring to my Algebra/Trigonometry textbook from college to clarify topics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quick Delivery
Thank you Destinybook for the speedy delivery of the math book.I received the book several days before my first calculus exam, which was very helpful in refreshing my memory on trigonometry. The math book was also in superb condition.Thank you again for excellent customer service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for a review, of little value for learning.
If you have previously studied and largely understood algebra and trigonometry and just need a quick review, then this book is right for you. However, if you haven't studied these topics or didn't understand them the first time, then it will be of little value. The coverage is thorough in breadth, starting with the basics of adding and subtracting all types of numbers through logarithms, exponential functions and trigonometry. Only a few pages are devoted to each topic with exercises at the end of each section. Solutions to some of the exercises are given at the end, although in my opinion there should have been more.
While the explanations are short, to the extent that it is possible in a small number of pages, they are through in depth. In a section that I found interesting, the dy/dx notation for a derivative is used. However, knowledge of calculus is not required, the reader is simply being asked to algebraically solve for dy/dx rather than use any knowledge of what it represents. Used in the manner for which it was intended this book is an effective tool in the study of precalculus material. Note: This book is nearly identical to the companion book, "Just-In-Time: Algebra & Trigonometry for Calculus." It would be a waste of money to buy both.

4-0 out of 5 stars It explains some really well and some not so much or at all.
Most of the time it is very helpful to see how the problems are worked out. Not very often, but occasionally there are some problems that are now worked out at all. Answers are given in the back of the text book but the solutions manual does not even give that. If you are struggling it is definitely worth it though. ... Read more

Product Description

The Mathematics of the Heavens and the Earth is the first major history in English of the origins and early development of trigonometry. Glen Van Brummelen identifies the earliest known trigonometric precursors in ancient Egypt, Babylon, and Greece, and he examines the revolutionary discoveries of Hipparchus, the Greek astronomer believed to have been the first to make systematic use of trigonometry in the second century BC while studying the motions of the stars. The book traces trigonometry's development into a full-fledged mathematical discipline in India and Islam; explores its applications to such areas as geography and seafaring navigation in the European Middle Ages and Renaissance; and shows how trigonometry retained its ancient roots at the same time that it became an important part of the foundation of modern mathematics.

The Mathematics of the Heavens and the Earth looks at the controversies as well, including disputes over whether Hipparchus was indeed the father of trigonometry, whether Indian trigonometry is original or derived from the Greeks, and the extent to which Western science is indebted to Islamic trigonometry and astronomy. The book also features extended excerpts of translations of original texts, and detailed yet accessible explanations of the mathematics in them.

No other book on trigonometry offers the historical breadth, analytical depth, and coverage of non-Western mathematics that readers will find in The Mathematics of the Heavens and the Earth.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Reference Book on Ancient Mathematics
The mathematics presented in this book spans the period from ancient times up to 1550. The author discusses the progress in mathematical development, chronologically throughout this period, starting in Egypt and Babylon, then on through Greece, India and Islamic countries, to finally end in Europe. The main focus is the development of trigonometry for use principally in astronomy but also in earth-related matters. Since this is mainly a reference book, the author pulls no mathematical punches. Throughout the book, mathematical discussions are interspersed with very brief historical snippets; these give the subject an always-popular human flavor. In order to provide the reader with a better appreciation for the mathematics of the distant past, the author has retained the techniques used at the time, including the use of the sexagesimal (base 60) number system where applicable. As a result, a reader who has been trained in modern mathematical techniques will need to get used to these ancient ways, especially if his/her objective is to follow, in detail, the mathematical arguments presented. Fortunately, the author provides modern "Explanations" after each ancient digression that has been translated from the ancient texts. The writing style is both authoritative and clear - certainly what one would hope for in any reference/textbook. Those taking university courses on ancient mathematics, as well as the most serious of math buffs, are likely to be the ones who will appreciate this book the most. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn traditional trig methods
This book was my trig book in College. The instructor, Bill Litzmann, was famous for shunning the use of calculators and required that we work every problem with "a #2 pencil and a legal pad," just like he did. This seemed unfair at the time, but in the long run it's a good idea. That said, this book actually teaches BOTH ways of thinking about trig. It teaches a solid foundation in understanding and working trig problems without a calculator and it also has sections on how to use a calculator to solve problems. It even includes memes for memorizing things like the Sin and Cos of angles by radians. In short, I recommend learning to do trig without a calculator and using this book to do so. Especially if you plan to into multivariable calculus or upper level physics where trig is used constantly, especially in coordinate transformations and rotations. ... Read more

Came in the mail quite quickly and is in very good condition. No tears, scratches or anything. just a few pencil marks on a few pages. Definitely not complaining considering how much money this saved me! (:

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Textbook
To be honest, I am very frustrated with this book.My biggest complaint about it is that the examples that are worked out (not explained mind you) often times have no connection to the homework problems. In fact the homework problems are always much more difficult, so the textbook doesn't prepare you for what you need to know.It is beyond me how the author thinks we can solve the homework problems, if he fails to show how they are approached in the first place. This author has no business writing textbooks and I haven't a clue why my college went with the book in the first place.

3-0 out of 5 stars Author could do better
I used this textbook for a trigonometry class. In many of the chapters, the author hardly explained many steps in how to do problems and leaves out important key examples and topics needed to do the homework problems. When the author actually does explain the examples, he gives only either the easiest examples possible or unrelated examples. What I dislike the most is that this author only gives practice problems that do not reinforce topics needed to do the homework problems.
