Excerpt: 2009 Samoa earthquake -Crews working near the damage from the tsunami in American SamoaThe Los Angeles Times, quoting a source at the National Park of American Samoa, reported that "four tsunami waves, 15 to 20 ft (4.6 to 6.1 m) high", and "reaching up to a mile (1.6 km) inland" hit American Samoa shortly after the earthquake. The water flowed inland about 100 yards (91 m) before receding, leaving some cars stuck in the mud. Damage to the National Park's natural reserves and the destruction of its visitor center and main offices have been reported, while only 20% of the park's 40 to 50 employees and volunteers had been found. A beach village was reported to have been "wiped out", killing at least 14 people after the earthquake had sent residents fleeing for higher ground. Large numbers of American Samoans were said to have been left injured or homeless. Confirmed death tolls rose to 22 people, with many people still missing in the villages of Leone and Pago Pago. A Radio New Zealand International correspondent reported that the center of Pago Pago, the largest city in American Samoa, had sustained heavy damage in the tsunami, with its main street flooded, cars overturned, and shoreline businesses damaged. He "also witnessed looting in one...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=24518475 ... Read more

It is close to Tongatapu, but forms a separate administrative division. It has an area of 87.44 km, and a population in 2006 of 5,165 people. Eua is a hilly island, the highest tops are the Teemoa (chicken manure) 312m, with the grave of the soldier on top, and the Vaiangina (watersprings) 305m. Yet the island is not volcanic. It is shaped by the rubbing of the Tonga plate against the Pacific plate, pushing Eua up and leaving the 7 km (10.8 km if you ask Dan) deep Tonga trench on the bottom of the ocean, a short distance towards the east. The soil of Eua is volcanic, as it is of Tongatapu, but that is only the top layer, deposited by eruptions of nearby volcanoes ten thousands years ago. Under it are the solid rocks of pushed up coral. Eua counts many huge caves and holes, which not all yet have been explored. Eua is the only island in Tonga that has a rivers, and has (until Vavau got one too) the only bridge in the kingdom. It drains into the harbour near the capital of the island, Ohonua. A unique feature is the shore between Ohonua and Tufuvai. It is coralreef only a little bit pushed up by and still close to the sea level. Many small tidal pools are found,...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6809038 ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Tonga," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Tonga in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Tonga when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Tonga, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
This book was brilliant and very exciting. It was interesting to learn about the different islands William visited and what he discovered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pual Dale's The Tonga Book
This was a very informational source on William Mariner. It is not the full account that William Mariner wrote, which I didn't realize before purchasing, but it has the most important sections I think when comparing it to John Martin's edition. It was easier to sit at once and read or research than Martin's copy and a good piece to have for my research. Thereare some pictures in the center that are nice displays of things Mariner describes, they are poor copies but some I couldn't find elsewhere in public. The cover picture of Mariner is in color which elsewhere I only found in black and white. Mariner's tale is a very unique and interesting one. I think it would be a fun yet educational read for school students, areal Robinson Crusoe. Mariner was a young boy of 13 in 1805 when he stopped apprenticeship for law and went after his father's trade on the sea. He took on with the Port Au Prince (An originally French ship taken in the Caribbean) which was given orders to plunder the Spanish in the Pacific since England was at War with France. For a year they plundered and whaled off of the south American coast in the leaky ship. The captain died and Capt Brown took over heading for Hawaii to repair and restock. From here they sailed to Tahiti and then to Lifuka, Ha'apai, Tonga it was here that Capt Brown met his folly. Dec 1, 1806 The Tongan chief Finau Ulukalala 2 from Lifuka attacked the ship to use its wealth and armaments to finally be able to take over all of Tonga. Mariner being thought to be the son of the Capt or someone important was spared and adopted by Finau as his son Toki Ukamea (Iron Axe) and given a mother, Mafi Hape. Holding such a position Mariner soon learned the language and is able to describe much about Tonga, its structure and culture, the people of the time and the government. And as many others commented its amazing how many of the things Mariner described are still the same or recognizable today. ... Read more
