Product Description
The question of how one can be both Hispanic and Protestant has perplexed Mexican Americans in Texas ever since Anglo-American Protestants began converting their Mexican Catholic neighbors early in the nineteenth century. Mexican-American Protestants have faced the double challenge of being a religious minority within the larger Mexican-American community and a cultural minority within their Protestant denominations. As they have negotiated and sought to reconcile these two worlds over nearly two centuries, los Protestantes have melded Anglo-American Protestantism with Mexican-American culture to create a truly indigenous, authentic, and empowering faith tradition in the Mexican-American community. This book presents the first comparative history of Hispanic Methodists, Presbyterians, and Baptists in Texas. Covering a broad sweep from the 1830s to the 1990s, Paul Barton examines how Mexican-American Protestant identities have formed and evolved as los Protestantes interacted with their two very different communities in the barrio and in the Protestant church. He looks at historical trends and events that affected Mexican-American Protestant identity at different periods and discusses why and how shifts in los Protestantes' sense of identity occurred. His research highlights the fact that while Protestantism has traditionally served to assimilate Mexican Americans into the dominant U.S. society, it has also been transformed into a vehicle for expressing and transmitting Hispanic culture and heritage by its Mexican-American adherents. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Historic Churches of Texas (1994 Revision)
Texas, a land of contrasts and divergent cultures, has an equally checkered and fascinating history of religious faiths. Historic Churches of Texas delves into the century and a half of the state's history to reveal the part that early day priests and preachers, parishes and congregations played in the development of the state. Originally published in 1980, the book has been completely reeditied and updated. Mr. Driscoll died in 1987.

While avoiding any attempt to discuss theology, the book concentrates rather on historical movements of the various religious faiths, and the people who helped establish the early churches while carving out an empire from the wilderness.

Authors Grisham and Driskill have traversed the state many times, interviewing church historiographers, leaders of the various religious faiths and orders, and searching for original sources for this highly neglected portion of Texas history. While many church and denominational histories have been compiled, this seems to be the first attempt to edit and publish a cohesive account of all the churches in Texas.

The book not only surveys the seven major church groups but includes historic ethnic churches, synagogues of the Jewish faith, and the out-of-the-way, unusual features of churches over a wide expanse of Texas.

1-0 out of 5 stars Church Growth Recipe for Disaster
This poorly written and edited book contains numerous grammatical and typesetting errors, which immediately sets the tone for the quality of any book. In addition, the church growth model, as outlined in the form of one church's story, is far from unique, interesting, or Biblical. Concerns with this method of church organization would include: lack of visible leadership in the church (deacons and elders), adherence to modern seeker-friendly gimmicks to appeal to church goers (for example, the book outlines how this church uses a "Country" theme, has "Country" outreaches such as a Chicken Fried Steak dinner, rodeos, etc.) The financial model is quite good however, since it is based on a percentage program that does not change.

Overall, I'd say that if your church were to follow this model, it would also likely grow quickly, as it presents a comfortable and appealing atmosphere to the masses. This growth however, would come at the risk of becoming lukewarm spiritually. When Biblical principles are ignored in favor of pleasing men and not God, the results are disastrous. I would expect this church will eventually erode from the inside out, because there are no Biblical safeguards in place to protect the flock from the typical dangers that threaten them. If this church model were a form of government, it would be a dictatorship. Would not recommend this book or this method. ... Read more
