Love this book!
Our baby is born American, but we would like her to be fully immersed in our Filipino culture, starting with the language.This is perfect!The graphics are great, baby loves the colors too!Just wish that it wouldnt be too gender (male)-specific...."my son", "he", etc.But no big deal, I just translate into a female version.I am buying more Filipino books!

Great 1st book, just as described.
This is a great book to introduce some common Tagalog words like lola (grandma) & kumot (blanket) as well as some Filipino culture, like J for Jeepney & Q for Quezon.It does not purport to be the definitive Tagalog teaching book so it's funny to me that some people are giving this a bad rating as if they were expecting an encyclopedia. It's a children's book with Filipino characters, words & phrases- nothing more or less. The pictures are bright and colorful, as well.

My First Book of Tagalog Words, Filipino Rhymes and Verses
The second portion of the title, "filipino rhymes and verses" is very misleading.The book just has one Tagalog word for each letter of the alphabet, the rhymes and verses to introduce each word are all in English.I found the text to be very poor.

Language for children
The book wasn't exactly what I thought it would be but it is a cute book and does have some words in it that are "learnable".I bought it for my grandson.He likes the pictures.

Its just OK.
Its ok, but not great.My son and I love the graphics and colors, but the text is lacking.The author writes a disclaimer in the beginning that she added non-traditional letters like C, X, and Z etc. (due to the Spanish and American influences on the country), but what disappointed me was that the traditional sound "Ng" from the real Tagalog alphabet was missing.So many Tagalog words start with "Ng", so she shouldnt have left this out.Otherwise, its ok. ... Excellent Reference Book
Without doubt, the most difficult aspect of learning Tagalog is verb conjugation. To be able to understand "focus", affixes and roots gives you an immediate recogniiton of what is being said and what is being written.

As a beginner/intermediate student, I typically learn in a "rules" based fashion. This reference guide (and no it is NOT a phrase book) teaches you to recognize repeated patterns in the structure of the verbs.

I thoroughly recommend this book. The excellent introductory chapter clearly explains how to interpret the verb tables. There are approximately 200 Tagalog verbs shown in the tables. Someone mentioned above that they wish the number was increased. However, if you study the conjugation of these 200 verbs - you will be able to conjugate 99% of all verbs.

the conjugation of Tagalog verbs
The book is the reprint of an old publication typed in Courier characters on a typewriter. One would expect a modernized version in Times Roman characters. The authors ignored the accent system devised for Tagalog about a century ago. Only a minority of verbal forms have their stress(es) indicated by the acute accent. Too many are left without accent(s). One of the reasons why I bought this manual was to know how ma- verbs were stressed. These verbs were typed without accents. I suppose a beginner will be disappointed for all the verbs conjugated in this book because of its very limited use of the acute accent. What is also missing is the government of verbs. For instance tanóng "ask" has the reference pattern magtanóng ang A ng B sa C "A to ask B to C". The average student cannot guess this.

Tagalog verbs are very hard for the non-tagalog to understand. It's a lot of hard work and you will have to dig a little deeper. If you thought that Tagalog was an easy language and that you would master it with this book you were wrong. On the other hand this book will be a great help for those who are serious students of Tagalog. If you are just trying to learn a phrase or two...this is not you book.

just a bunch of verbs
I don't know how those 501 verbs books work for all those other languages available right now, but I suppose I expected this book to show different types of verbs in Tagalog AND explain how they are used.There is a paradigm of different verbs inflected by aspects and modes, but with no explanation as to how the verb would be used.I was quite disappointed.

One to miss
Thanks to a mixup on the Amazon server, some reviews of this offering seem to have strayed into the Korean section, with predictable confusion. But in fact this CD (formerly published on cassettes) is of very little use even for people who actually want to learn Tagalog. You can't teach, or learn, a language via recordings of vocabulary lists and simple phrases out of context. Which is all you get here. This material will leave you completely clueless about how to string the words together in anything beyond the preset formulae used here. If you want to find out what a limited number of Tagalog words sound like when read out as lists, this is just about fit for that limited purpose; but there are cheaper (and indeed free) sources of better material for that, which a quick Google will locate. If you have anything more than mild and limited curiosity about this fascinating language, then don't waste your money on this item.

Great for learning random vocabulary... terrible for conversation.
I only bought this Tagalog program because Pimsleur does not, as of yet, have a Tagalog lesson set.Wow, was I ever disappointed!It just has a person saying each phrase twice and then moves on to the next.There is no continuity to the phrases, nothing conversational about them, and nothing that would serve to cement the information into one's brain.If you can wait until next year, Pimsleur claims they will be coming out with a Tagalog course in the Fall of 2007.

Clearly a GLITCH in the Amazon Reviews system
Regarding Reviews for Tagalog Pilipino: Audio CD Course (Language 30).This may not be a helpful review for the product since I have yet to purchase it for my brother, who is getting ready to travel to the Philippines.But I'm a nosy character, so I decided to investigate the confusion about the reviews.I scrolled down to Heather Sommer's review and clicked SEE ALL MY REVIEWS, and Lo and Behold, she is referring to another book called Chinese Mandarin: Audio Cd Course (Language 30) (Audio CD).So, I clicked on the Chinese Mandarin link, and once again, Lo and Behold! All the SAME EXACT REVIEWS for the Tagalog Book appear for the Chinese Mandarin book.Very Bizarre!!!And, for the record, sub8hr was, in fact, referring to a book called Integrated Korean: Intermediate 2 (Klear Textbooks in Korean Language).Please don't be mad at the reviewers, it's not their fault.Tell Amazon that they confused the hell out of you.

uh.. i think there's an error
i just read through most of these reviews and it seems to me there might have either been a mix-up on the part of the reviewers (reviewing the wrong product) or a glitch in the website (somehow transferring reviews for the korean language product to this page about the tagalog language product). anywho, that's just my guess.. because it seems odd that more than one person of different locales reviewed a product for korean.

A So-So learning experience
I have studied Pilipino before and would saY HONESTLY THATTHIS BOOK IS MARGINAL BECAUSE IT USES SEMANTIC AND GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES THAT DO NOT INCORPORATE THE TRUE ESSENCE OF THE TAGALOG USED IN THE PHILIPPINES AS I LEARNED AND USED WHEN I LIVED IN MANILA. In any case, it is a marginal usage of Tagalog and I would not buy this book if I were serious about learning Tagalog for anything other than getting in and out of manila International Airport....if that...if at all.

Excellent Phrase book
This is an excellent phrase book to use for travelers and anyone interested in learning this interesting language. It has very good phonetic spellings and easy-to-read layouts of pages.

I highly recommend this book as a must-have companion to additional study materials.

Bad product
I have found many mispellings and grammatical errors in both english and tagalog in this book. It is inaccurate and inadequate. I would strongly recommend the hippocrene standard dictionary: tagalog-english over this book. I do not recommend this book to anyone.

Suits its purpose
This is more like a handbook of useful phrases. For a beginner this is a great start. It by no means will teach you tagalog but you will be able to understand and use common speech. Good entry level book.

Excellent beginner level method of learning Tagalog
I am about 1/2 way through after 2 weeks and can already hold a conversation in Tagalog.I also used Pimsleur Japanese when I moved to Japan and have to say it is by far the easiest and fastest method of learning a foreign language.However, for formal writing or speech you would want to augment this with a written, software, or formal schooling course as the Pimsleur method is audio only and does not teach most grammatical rules directly.Instead it relies on your ability to pick up on them over time through repeated usage and occasional hints or examples.

This is THE most comprehensive Tagalog grammar available so far. Any serious student, whether beginning or advanced, of Tagalog will highly benefit from this masterpiece. The things I like about this book are: anin-depth explanation of Tagalog pronunciation (with IPA) which discussesthe phonemes and its allophones (some surprised me!), great organization ofits chapters, explicitly explained grammatical features, comments onregional usage, comparisons, charts, and much more.It's indexed too, soit's not so hard to find what aspect of Tagalog grammar you want to lookup.
