Turkish Turkic family of languages , a subclass of the Ural-Altaic languages ( Uralic languages Altaic languages ). Thus, such living languages as Mongolian (an Altaic languages), Hungarian and Finnish (Uralic languages) are close or distant relatives of Turkish. Although the languages of other Turkic countries (former Soviet republics) are quite similar to Turkish (especially those of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan), there are many major differences in pronunication, grammar, and vocabulary. The languages used by former Central Asian people (e.g., Huns) are assumed to be considerably close to today's Turkic languages. The characteristic features of Turkish are the vowel harmony (if the first vowel of a Turkish word is a front vowel, the second and other vowels of the same word are usually the same vowel or another front vowel; e.g. Erdem), the abundance of suffixes (and very few prefixes), and a word order that is the opposite of that in English and other

    Extractions: This course is an introduction to Ottoman Turkish. Students will be familiarized with the Ottoman script and acquire basic reading and writing skills in it. The course will also include the study of the specifics of the Ottoman alphabet and writing system such as the special phonological and morphological values of certain letters that are peculiar to Turkish words. This course is a continuation of Ottoman Turkish I. Developing the reading ability achieved in the first course,: introducing the original Arabic and Persian words and rules in Ottoman Turkish and studying and practicing the use of Arabic and Persian words and grammar related with reading and comprehension are the basic properties of the course. This course studies the language family of which Turkish is also member. It aims at going a brief explanation of structure of Turkish Language defining the languages and dialects in the Turkish Language family, providing some information about the territories where these languages and dialects are spoken and about the people who speak them: discussing the classification attempts of Turkish languages and dialects. The course describes phonetics, the related areas and Turkish phonetics in general within this framework the main topics to be covered include: phonetic features of sounds in Turkish in terms of their production and articulation; classification and usage of these sounds; syllables structure of Turkish; phonetic symbols; practice of phonetic analysis.
