The rates of GVHD (both acute and chronic) were reasonable and neutrophil recovery was better in grafts that had a higher number of nucleated cells before being frozen. This study compared 113 children (under the age of 15) who underwent cord-blood transplants from matched siblings with 2052 children who under went bone marrow transplants from matched siblings donors. Recipients of cord blood were less likely to have GVHD (both acute and chrnoic), but engraftment took longer.

Extractions: To find a doctor Who is a candidate for a heart transplant? Heart transplantation is a last-resort option for people with heart failure . To be considered for a heart transplant, a person's heart must be unresponsive to other forms of treatment and all other vital organs must be in excellent health. How is heart transplantation done? The surgery must be performed immediately after a suitable donor heart becomes available. The recipient is placed on a heart-lung machine that takes over the functions of the heart and lungs so the diseased heart can be removed and replaced with the new heart. Once the blood vessels are reconnected, the heart is ready to function. Are there any complications? One of the main complications following heart transplantation is rejection. The body's immune system treats the new organ as foreign tissue and produces antibodies to destroy it. Immunosuppressive drugs such as cyclosporine (sie-klo-SPOR-in) are given to suppress this response. In cases of severe rejection, retransplantation may be considered if a new donor can be found. In the past, side effects of anti-rejection drugs kept elderly persons and infants from being recipients of heart transplants. Now, improvements in the field have made it possible for many newborns to those in their seventies to be eligible for a transplant.

About 60 percent of heart-lung transplants live at least 1 year after surgery. Research is under way to develop even better ways to control transplant rejection and improve survival.

But by using an existing drug in a new way, doctors may be able to relieve at least some of the pressure on the nation's limited supply of donor organs. About 7 percent of all liver transplants go to people suffering from a disease called primary biliary cirrhosis, an auto-immune disorder that is the fourth leading cause of liver failure. This chronic condition which, despite the word "cirrhosis" in its name, is not related to alcohol consumption almost exclusively affects women. There is no known cure. But doctors have discovered that methotrexate, a common cancer chemotherapy drug, can slow or even reverse the progression of the disease when used in combination with two other drugs. CNN's Al Hinman reports The irony is that liver patients aren't supposed to take methotrexate because it can cause liver damage. "If you ever take the package insert out of a bottle of methotrexate, in big, bold letters it says, 'Warning. Do not administer or give to anybody with liver disease,'" said Dr. Marshall Kaplan of Tufts/New England Medical Center.

But there are some major obstacles it's very difficult to find a well-matched donor, and, even when one is found, the transplant more often than not doesn't work. But at a meeting this week of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Suzanne Ilstad of the Allegheny University of the Health Sciences in Philadelphia unveiled a new advance in bone marrow transplantation that may solve both of those problems. Ilstad has come up with a new technique for performing transplants. It has been tried in 25 patients and all of them had a successful transplant. That compares with a 30 percent success rate using the traditional transplant technique. "We have been able to identify a way to engineer a bone marrow transplant to take out all the bad cells that cause graft-versus-host disease," said Ilstad.
