Although the team won the Ivy League in 1941 and 1946, it no longer had the continuity of dominance that linked the Olympians of old. Still, Penn wasn't in the dark. At the 1950 Penn Relays the team won both the distance medley and the 4x800; Ben Kreitzberg took the 100 title himself. Additionally, Van Zimmerman and John Gray contended nationally in the pole vault, having legendary duels with Villanova's Don Bragg at close to world record height. Two athletes were sent to participate at the Fifth Olympiad in Stockholm the following year. At the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, Japan took its first 2 gold medals, in track and field, and swimming. Athlete Hitomi Kinue became the first woman to join a Japanese Olympic contingent. She received a silver medal in the 800-meter event, and her success encouraged more women to take up competitive sports. A contingent of 131 members represented Japan at the 1932 Games in Los Angeles, including 16 women. Japanese athletes earned a total of 7 gold, 7 silver, and 4 bronze medals in track and field, swimming, equestrian events, and field hockey.

The Women's Olympics were the brainchild of the remarkable Alice Milliat of France. A translator by profession, a rower and sports administrator by avocation, she was founder and president of La Fédération Sportive Féminine Internationale (FSFI). She started the Women's Games in direct response to the repeated refusal of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) to put women's track and field on the program of the Olympic Games which they organized. The first "women's Olympic Games" was a one-day track meet in Paris in 1922. Eighteen athletes broke world records before 20,000 spectators. The second Games were held in Gothenberg, Sweden, four years later. Women from 10 nations, including distant Japan, took part. (Canada was not one of them). With a spectacular opening ceremony and marchpast, the patronage of the Swedish royal family, and several world records, the Games evoked comparisons with the IOC's Stockholm Olympics of 1912. Although Milliat kept her part of the bargain, the IAAF subsequently granted only five events. A majority of the FSFI went along, ensuring women's competition at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam where
