President Clinton declared nine counties major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid. He will be going to his home state on Tuesday to inspect the damage, a White House official said. Federal Emergency Management Agency Director James Lee Witt was also expected to visit. Emergency officials conducted a house-by-house search of Arkadelphia for the dead, injured and at least two people reported missing, while police evacuated part of downtown because of natural gas leaks. Leaks were also reported in College Station.

The storms that raced through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia on Thursday night and early Friday killed at least one woman and injured at least 20 people, officials said. Some of the worst damage was reported along the Georgia-South Carolina border, where hundreds of buildings were damaged. "We've got trees down, houses down, mobile homes blown through," said John Pettigrew, the mayor in Edgefield, 55 miles southwest of the capital, Columbia. A woman was killed when she was crushed under a mobile home in Edgefield, said Mike Casey, Edgefield County's emergency preparedness director. In northern Georgia, a man died of a heart attack after taking refuge from the storm under an overpass.
