Photograph by: NSSL Nearly 3 in 10 tornadoes are strong, such as this twister on the plains of North Dakota. Looking northeast (from about 2 miles), note the spiraling inflow cloud, probably a tail cloud, feeding into the tornado. An important safety consideration is that weak and strong tornadoes by definition do not level well-built homes. Thus, a secure home will offer shelter from almost 100 percent of all direct tornado strikes. Only violent tornadoes are capable of leveling a well-anchored, solidly constructed home. Fortunately, less than 2 percent of all tornadoes reach the 200+ MPH violent category. Furthermore, most violent tornadoes only produce home-leveling damage within a very small portion of their overall damage swath. Less than 5 percent of the 5,000 affected homes in Wichita Falls, Texas were leveled by this massive 1979 tornado. (Looking south from 5 miles).

More funerals were planned for Monday in north-central Alabama , the state hardest hit by violent weather that also claimed lives in Georgia and Mississippi. There were 33 deaths in Alabama alone. Thousands of homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed in the three states. Federal Emergency Management Agency Director James Lee Witt told CNN that storm survivors face a difficult task. "Just the cleanup and getting ready to rebuild is going to be massive," he told CNN on Monday morning. The damage, Witt said, was the worst he had seen in his five years at FEMA. "Everything is debris. There's nothing left," he said.

Sunday morning, half a dozen states from Mississippi to West Virginia were cleaning up from a string of deadly tornadoes and thunderstorms that left at least 30 people dead and hundreds more wounded. Arkansas got the worst of the punishing weather, which claimed at least 23 Arkansans. The storm was deadliest in Saline County, just southwest of Little Rock, where 12 deaths have been attributed to the storm. Fierce tornadoes flattened parts of downtown Arkadelphia, a small town about 50 miles (80 km) from Little Rock, and reduced many neighborhoods and businesses to rubble. W E A T H E R Radar image for North America Search dogs were brought in to help locate the dead and injured buried in rubble that resembled a war zone. "It's horrible. The whole downtown is gone," said resident Jeremy Cox. "There's one mobile home left standing out of I don't know how many, maybe about 60," Arkadelphia Police Chief Bob Johnson said. "We lost count of the serious injuries at 19."

The line of storms began in Kansas, destroying homes and downing power lines in Oklahoma before crossing the Red River into Texas Sunday evening. Four tornadoes touched down near Purcell, Oklahoma, about 40 miles south of Oklahoma city, causing minor injuries. "We've had six or seven houses and two mobile homes destroyed but there were no serious injuries," said Jason Walker of the McClain County Sheriff's Department. "They were lucky." "Thought? I knew we were dead," said Nanette Williams who was inside her mobile home along with her teen-age daughter when a tornado knocked if off its foundation. At least six tornadoes touched ground along the river border between Texas and Oklahoma with no injuries, although the winds blew down trees and damaged roofs. "Everything's a mess, but I don't have anything as being obliterated," said Dee Hazle of the Cooke County (Texas) Sheriff's Department.

Each year an average of 800-1000 tornadoes are reported nationwide resulting in many deaths and injuries. Research at NSSL is focused on gaining a better understanding of tornado development and the environment in which tornadoes form. This is accomplished through theoretical studies, field programs, and radar algorithm development and testing. A tornado is as a violently rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. The most violent tornadoes are capable of tremendous destruction with wind speeds of 250 mph or more. Damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long. Tornadoes come in all shapes and sizes and can occur anywhere in the U.S at any time of the year. In 1993 and 1999, the team also participated in the NCCAA national championship. This will be a bit of a "reloading" year for Geneva. Extractions: Oklahoma City, OK, May 3, 1999: On Monday evening, May 3, a long track F5, violent tornado traveled from near Chickasha, Oklahoma, to just east of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Along its path this tornado produced areas of F5 damage to both rural sections of central Oklahoma as well as densely populated areas of Oklahoma City and its suburbs. In the wake of this single tornado, there were 42 people left dead, several hundred injured and over 1 billion dollars in damage. Deadliest Other deadly tornadoes include the May 6, 1840 tornado which killed 317 people in Natchez, Mississippi; the May 27, 1896, tornado which killed 255 in St. Louis, Missouri. Tornadoes on successive days in 1936 killed 216 people in Tupelo, Mississippi, on April 5; and 203 people in Gainesville, Georgia, on April 6. Biggest, Costliest Outbreaks The second most devastating outbreak of tornadoes of modern record was the 1965 Palm Sunday outbreak. Severe thunderstorms in the Upper Midwest spawned a total of 51 tornadoes within twelve hours. Indiana, Ohio and Michigan were hardest hit. The tornadoes killed 256 people and caused more than $200 million in damages. Two powerful tornadoes, about 30 minutes apart in time, traveled nearly identical paths across Branch, Hilsdale, Lenawee and Monroe counties in extreme south central and southeastern Lower Michigan. The tornadoes killed 44, and caused more than $32 million in damages to those areas. In Lenawee County, the damage path was up to four miles in width.

About 250 people were injured, according to state officials. The federal government on Monday declared the area eligible for federal disaster aid. President Clinton plans to visit the damaged areas Wednesday. "This is the worst day of tornadoes ever to hit central Florida," said Gailee Cardwell, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Emergency Management. The tornadoes hit four counties: Osceola, Orange, Seminole and Volusia. A L S O : Detailed Map of Central Florida One of the hardest hit areas was the Ponderosa Campground in Osceola County north of Kissimmee. The campground was unusually full because of an annual rodeo and the opening of baseball spring training. The campground is located behind a stadium used by the Houston Astros for spring training.
