But most probably wouldn't think of having a simple blood test to determine if their thyroid is causing those problems. And they should. As many as 10 percent of women suffer from an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, by the time they turn 50, with the incidence rising to 17 percent by age 60. The disease in which the immune system attacks the thyroid is less common in men. The symptoms of an underactive thyroid can resemble other health problems like chronic fatigue syndrome, anemia or depression. People often attribute their illness to a fast-paced lifestyle. And because the chances of developing the disease increase with age, many women dismiss the symptoms as signs of aging. Too many patients and doctors overlook the fact that this tiny gland at the base of your neck can wreak so much havoc.

She also noted apparent protrusion of the left eye, and a generalized dryness of the eyes. Her medical history is remarkable only for a history of hyperthyroidism, treated several years ago with radioactive iodine, and now on replacement thyroid therapy. This is a 75 year old female who developed intermittent vertical double vision after bumping her head on a open cabinet door one week ago. The double vision is only apparent while reading through bifocals. Her medical history is significant for well-controlled hypertension. She denies headache or any other symptoms. Alert, oriented female in no distress. Blood Pressure is 120/80, pulse rate is 80 and regular. Systemic exam is unremarkable. Thyroid function studies are normal. Ophthalmic and neuro-ophthalmic exam: The visual acuity is 20/20 on the right, 20/25 on the left. The palpebral fissure is obviously wider on the left side, with the upper lid appearing retracted. Pupillary function is normal with no Marcus-Gunn pupil. Fundoscopic examination is normal. The ocular motility is abnormal, as illustrated by the graphic below:

I have polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type II, frequently referred to as Schmidt's syndrome. The classic manifestations of this syndrome are adrenal insufficiency plus autoimmune thyroid disease and/or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. I have all three of the above conditions: Addison's disease , hypothyroidism, and type I diabetes. Addisons and hypothyroidism are treated with oral hormone replacement medications. Type I diabetes is the most serious and difficult to control of the three conditions. Treatment usually involves balancing insulin therapy administered through injections or a pump, diet, and exercise with the goal of maintaining normal blood sugar levels. After I was diagnosed with Addisons and started taking hydrocortisone, I started to have highly variable blood sugars. I began to have sugars in the 300's and also frequent hypoglycemic episodes. I started searching for information about the interaction between Addisons and diabetes or any special treatment strategies related to the two conditions and was surprised to find almost nothing. Given the adverse and potentially dangerous effect Addisons has on diabetes, this information should be explicitly stated and available to people with Addisons and diabetes. This website is my attempt to provide information on this subject and hopefully connect with others who have useful information about Addisons and diabetes.

Burden of Suffering Subclinical hyperthyroidism, recognized by a subnormal TSH level, is seen in 0.2-5% of the elderly population; Û 1%/year progress to overt disease.11,40,55,56 Subnormal levels of TSH are often transient, returning to normal without intervention.3,25,57 There is limited evidence of risk from subclinical hyperthyroidism except when it is due to excessive thyroxine replacement. Case series have reported subclinical hyperthyroidism in a number of patients with atrial fibrillation.58-61 Older controlled observational studies found no association between subclinical hyperthyroidism and atrial fibrillation,62,63 but a significant association was reported in one carefully controlled cohort study that used a sensitive TSH assay.57 One controlled study reported a significantly lower total cholesterol level in patients with a subnormal TSH level,51 suggesting a possible benefit of this condition.
