In recognition of the teacher in American society, St. Mary's University offers teacher education programs which have as their primary objective the preparation of quality educators, teachers who will positively impact not only students, but also the school community which they serve. Students must demonstrate college-level skills in reading, oral and written communication, critical thinking, and mathematics prior to taking their first education course or being admitted into the Teacher Preparation Program. Students preparing to teach in elementary school should take a bachelor's degree program with an approved interdisciplinary major in a group of subjects taught in the elementary school. Students preparing to teach in secondary schools, should take a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 24 semester hours in each of two approved areas in which they wish to teach plus a sequence of 18 semester hours in Education and 3 semester hours in reading courses. Composite teaching fields of 48-51 semester hours are available in English/Reading, and English/Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science. Any student interested in the teaching profession is urged to consult an adviser in the Education Department for available options specified by the State of Texas.
