    Extractions: This picture of my Meade LX 50 10 inch telescope should give you an idea of what I am using to take these photographs. I took this photograph on 3/12/99 at Lemon Lake in Cedar Lake Indiana. The sun was just setting in the background and a blanket of snow was covering the ground. Several of the photographs on this page were taken with this telescope and guided with the Meade ETX 90 , others were taken with the Orion Short Tube 80mm Refracting Telescope and guided with the LX 50. You can click on any of the thumb nail pictures to get the full size scan. I have tried to keep the scans at their original size but, a little variation in actual size has been noted. Men and women have looked up at the sky and wondered about the things they see up there for as long as humans have lived on our Earth. Long ago, the Sun and Moon were mysterious objects that could be seen in the day and night. But the planets and stars were even more mysterious probably because they are so far away that we could only see them as points of light. Unlike the things on the Earth that we can study up close, handle, listen to, smell, and taste, the only thing ancient watchers of the sky had to learn about things in space was their eyes and imaginations. Only very recently in the history of humanity have astronomers been able to extend the reach of our eyes (and our imaginations!). Galileo pioneered modern explorations in the early 1600's by using a device originally invented for naval operations to explore the heavens. The device he used, of course, was the telescope , an instrument used to gather and focus light. Our atmosphere prevents most of the electromagnetic radiation from reaching the ground, allowing just the visible band, parts of the radio band, and small fractions of the infrared and ultraviolet through. Our eyes can detect the visible (optical) band, so the early telescopes were all built to observe in that part of the electromagnetic spectrum. It wasn't until the 1930's that astronomers began observing with another part of the electromagnetic spectrum-the radio band. The development of space technology has enabled astronomers to put telescopes above the atmosphere and explore all of those places out there using the full range of the electromagnetic spectrum. The 6.5-degree x 6.5-degree plates are scanned using a modified PDS microdensitometer to a pixel scale of about 1.7 arcseconds per pixel for the POSS, SERC, and Palomar Quick-V surveys, and to about 1.0 arcseconds per pixel for the POSS-II surveys. Images of any part of the sky may be extracted from the DSS, in either FITS or GIF format.

Visible and large parts of radio spectrum can be observed anywhere on ground; small parts of infrared (IR) must be observed above water layer in atmosphere (elevations of 2750 m (9000 ft) or above); gamma-rays, X-rays, UV, most IR, and rest of radio must be observed in space. The part collecting the light is called the objective. Refractor use lens to bend light. First ones built. Disadvantages: a) Chromatic Aberration redder colors bent less than blue colors so see rainbow of colors around the image. Use multiple compensating lenses to counteract this OR have really long objective focal length to minimize effect (see drawing). This is why the early refracting telescopes were made very long. b) Support for lens only at ends of lens. Tends to sag under own weight. 40 inches is maximum size of refracting objective built. Reflector use mirror to reflect light. All modern research ones are this type. Advantages: a) No chromatic aberration. b) Support for objective all along one side so they can be BIG! Parabollic-shaped mirror focuses all parallel light rays to single point (remember that celestial objects are so far away that all the light rays from an object hit the Earth as parallel rays). Focus is before the eyepiece, so the image in astronomical telescopes (even with the refractor above) is upside down. Terrestrial-viewing telescopes use other lenses to re-invert the image right-side up.

More than 2100 people attended the meeting from 27 countries. Highlights included 27 conferences, four large poster sessions, and seven renowned plenary speakers. For each plenary session, the audience filled the ballroom to capacity and spilled over into the overflow room that provided video and audio of the speakers.
