Scant on recipes but beautifully bound
Most, if not all the recipes, I already have in my small collection of Scandinavian cookbooks. I was looking for more new recipes and purchased this cookbook. While the book is beautifully bound, with the addition of blue and yellow ribbon bookmarks, the recipe collection is scant. I'd highly recommend this book for someone who is just starting to collect Scandinavian cookbooks. This book would suit their purpose. As for me, I will continue to search for a more comprehensive cookbook than this one.

As a collector of books about Sweden, particularly cookbooks, I was delighted with this one. This book is not just a cookbook, but also a memoir and beautifully photographed. Beautiful book however, recipes don't seem to be tested.
I was given this book as a gift from my Swedish mother-in-law.It is really lovely to look at and I take it out every Christmas to use as reference for our annual Julbord (Christmas feast).The book gives the reader a nice taste of the author's Christmas traditions but doesn't go into too much detail about the origins of the customs which doesn't bother me too much because I only have to ask one of my husband's family members if I have a question.I agree with another reviewer that it would have been nice if the author had included the proper Swedish names for things.

Some of the recipes are really good, like the mumma (which is a concotion of a few types of beer, ginger ale and madeira), the toffee bars and the pink caramels, however several recipes seem to not have been tested.One year I tried making the gingersnaps and something was very wrong-- I had to throw the whole batch out.Today I was drooling over the photo of the coconut tops only to find that there's no coconut listed in the ingredients or mentioned in the recipe (if the Swedish name for the cookies were listed I could look it up!) There are other typos as well and oddly translated words which are rather annoying.

The author seems not realize that many Swedish ingredients can be found at specialty shops and IKEA and relies only on what can be found in American grocery stores for her recipes.This is a plus for someone who doesn't want to be bothered with ordering ingredients however, I think that anyone interested in creating a Swedish Christmas would want it to be as authentic as possible and wouldn't mind searching for some items.She mentions that she left out some fried cookies (struvor) because it's too hard to find the proper tools to make them but that's entirely untrue.You can buy rosette irons right here on Amazon.

Finally, I think that a list of sources at the back of the book would have been a great idea.As I mentioned, there are plenty of Swedish specialty shops on the internet where you can get anything from Julmust (Swedish Christmas soda) to lojrom and it's a shame that those things were left out of the book

All in all I really like this book a lot but the fact that some of the recipes have mistakes is a big no-no to me, hence only three stars.

The book was okay
I bought this as a gag gift for a friend because her neighbors are Swedish and when they invite her for dinner they serve only meat prepared with salt and pepper, no other spices.There are no sides served whatsoever, no vegetables, no starch.I thought there would be more recipes in this book.There were some pretty photos of food, but I would have liked more extensive photos of life in Sweden at Christmas time.The people, the culture, the traditions.I would have liked to see more of what the houses looked like decorated at Christmas, and more photos of people engaged in holiday pastimes.

Appreciation of Swedish Heritage
I really enjoyed this book.My husband's family emigrated from Sweden, and I want my children and grandchildren to appreciate their Swedish heritage.I used this book for our "Swedish Christmas" this year.The grandchildren had a great time with the girls playing St. Lucia and serving their parents hot chocolate and Lucia buns for breakfast in bread.

Our Swedish Christmas
Having made plans this year to have a Swedish Christmas, this book has proven to be invaluable. While the author presents the traditional way the Swedes celebrate Christmas, i.e., beginning with Advent and continuing until well after Christmas Day, my wife and I have decided we will take the best of the traditions and fold them all into one big day of celebration. Of course, the feature of our celebration will be the Smorgasbord. Many, many recipes are presented that sound both tasty and easy to prepare. Our Swedish Christmas will begin early Christmas Eve Day and will include a visit from the Saint Lucia girl, as played by our granddaughter, with her assortment of special rolls. We even have found a St. Lucia crown for her to wear. Our Smorgasbord table will follow many of the suggestions presented in the book.

For anyone interested in having a Swedish Christmas, this book is highly recommended.

A Swedish Christmas in America
Not only was the text in this book accurate and helpful, the photography is top notch. I ordered this book for all of my children, so that they can share the content with their families. When they were growing up we observed many of the Swedish Christmas customs. St. Lucia Day, Christmas Eve Dinner. the making of Lefse and Potato Sausage. Each of our children now lives scattered across the United States, only two of them in cities (Minneapolis and Ballard, Washington) where there is a large Swedish population. I love knowing that they will use this book, A Swedish Christmas in America, to pass these customs unto their children, several of them are also teachers, I know that this book will find it's way into their class rooms. ... Flawed
Inga Norberg Good Food From Sweden originally published in 1939. Old Fashioned Ginger Snaps left out the flour! and it seems otherwise inaccurate although reprinted many times. There are many, many better choices.

Just Like Mom Used to Make
My Swedish wife raves about this book because the desserts in it are just like her mom used to make like Swedish Ginger Cake and Dreams cookies. When her mom has visited us she's also enjoyed checking it out and baking from it. The recipes are easy, but the only downside is there are no pictures. Lots of Swedish Recipes, but a few French ones too...
Linnea jokes and says: "This is not really a "Swedish cook book," and explains that it is a reflection of her roots. Both her parents immigrated to the United States from Sweden. Her mother was a wonderful cook and this is a collection of her mother's recipes. She grew up with Cardamom Coffee Bread and has fond memories of her mother making cookies. Through the years she collected quite a selection of good recipes and added her own touches here and there. Some recipes are from friends and family.

The recipes you will find are in 15 chapters. Appetizers & Beverages, Yeast Breads, Quick Breads, Breakfast & Brunch, Cakes & Frostings, Cookies, Desserts & Pies, Meat, Chicken, Fish, Pasta, Salads & Dressings, Soups and Vegetables. There is also a chapter on Miscellaneous and Equivalents & Substitutions.

There are no color pictures, but a few cute sketches here and there. You will find a recipe for Swedish Fruit Bread, Swedish Yeast Twists, Swedish Pancakes, Swedish Cardamom Apple Cake, etc. All interspersed with other favorites.

My grandmother made notes in this cookbook where she would change a recipe here or there. It looks like she used the recipe for Butter Cream Frosting and there might be a small typo in that recipe because she crossed out 1/2 cup milk and wrote in 1 to 2 tablespoons, which makes a lot more sense. I also have a feeling that some of my late grandmother's cooking secrets are hiding in the pages of this cookbook. Page 99 with a recipe for Chocolate-Banana-Cream Pie is a bit worn out. She also wrote in to add 1/4 teaspoon salt. I will sometimes use salted butter when using a recipe for a chocolate item as it is true, a bit of salt helps bring out the flavor of chocolate.

Excerpt: Prästost ("priest cheese", sometimes spelled prastost or prestost) is a Swedish cheese with historical roots in Sweden's one-time custom of paying tithes with agricultural goods including milk. It was common for the church to make cheese from this milk from the 16th though 19th centuries. Today, this style of cheese once produced in churches across Sweden is factory-made from pasteurized cow's milk. Prästost is sometimes soaked or cured in whisky or other spirits; Saaland Pfarr is one such whisky-soaked variant. A version of prästost aged for 12 months and cured in Absolut vodka has been marketed as VODCheese. A 1969 USDA booklet describes the manufacturing technique for one whisky-cured style of prästost: Fresh, whole milk is set with rennet at a temperature of 90° F. When the curd is very firm, it is cut coarsely, then put in a sieve to allow the whey to drain off. The curd is collected in a cloth and kneaded to expel more whey. A book you'll use again and again
If you're into swedish country, you have to get this book!It's been my decorating bible!I love the beautiful photographs, but the text is even better.It explains the origins and purpose of the color palette, flooring, furniture, window treatments, room layouts, fabric and accessories used in ths style.It also discusses the influence of King Gustav, Carl Larsson and Josef Frank.The only part of this book I don't find useful is the recipe section.Other than that, I use this book constantly!It stays on my coffee table so I can browse through whenever I want.
