5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the HIT world
This book is only sold on Dr. Dardens site and I'm surprised that someone is actually selling it. It is an absolutely amazing book, it covers the history of HIT, lots of interviews of the people involved with the evolution of HIT and of course training routines. Arthur Jones just passed a few months ago and he truely was a man before his time. The lack of acceptance of Arthur Jones training principles is a classic case of conspiracy to suppress knowledge. This book has rekindled my love of training and I've since acquired 2 more Ellington Darden books. This book has changed my perspective on training and I'm UN-learning the HVT (High Volume Training) I grew up learning about when I was training in highschool in the 90's. If you want to train correctly instead of LIVING IN THE GYM 6 days a week, training twice a day split routines, and doing 10 sets of each exercise, then you might want to browse through this book. WARNING, remember I just said that Arthur Jones training principles lack of acceptance is a classic case of conspiracy to suppress knowledge, so some of the things you read in this book are COMPLETELY contradictory to what you may have learned in 99% of the training books out since the 80's. As a matter of fact, I would say it's 180 degrees different from what you've been taught. It's not about working out for hours several several times a week, or buying and consuming useless supplements (no matter how new and advanced or "specially formulated" they claim they are), or taking steroids. It's about training your body the natural way it is supposed to be trained and doing it strategically, feeding it a healthy diet and getting adequate rest between workouts. Just a tip for you "advanced" bodybuilders, your body doesn't require more training, it requires more rest to let it rebuild itself. You can make your body adapt to training by getting bigger, getting stronger and getting more stamina but there is no training that can be done to cause it to heal faster. So make sure you feed your body healthy natural nutrition, and get a full nights rest every night. I would highly recommend this book as well as another one of Dr. Dardens books, "The New High Intensity Training". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Could be improved, but well worth it!
The premise etc behind this book is excellent. However, the many black and white photos tell the likely reader of book very little. This should not take away though from the solid advice, work-out plans, bits and pieces of commonsense training, diet etc, and the seasonal/periodicity themes that make this book very worthwhile.Although I have not the experience nor credentials that Mr. Smith and many of you have, I recommend taking the themes of this book and expanding in more detail, and ditching the numerous b&w still photos that really tell an exerciser little about the movements. If anything, provide photos of important do's and don'ts of the exercises, but don't half-change the movement with a photo to fill the pages.Other than this opinion, I found the book an excellent addition to my fitness literature and plan on incorporating its ideas into my own routines.

2-0 out of 5 stars book
The routines in this book are soo random and lengthy a simpler more effective approach could be used.his navy seal book was better

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Workout!
I wanted to find a workout that I could stick with all year that is challenging and takes my body to new heights in terms of physical strength, endurance, and agility.Though I've only been on the program for a few weeks, I can already see these three aspects changing.

The workout starts normally enough, but gets tough fast.Fortunately Stew has made it flexible enough so that anyone can do it: from the hardcore wanna-be Navy SEAL to the dedicated guy who wants to get in shape.Complete with a full explanation of exercises, the full year-round routine, and even nutritional advice, Stew's book is a great find for those who want to find one good exercise program to stick with for a long time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Must have for 35yr olds with prior exercise experience who want to get back in shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective and Flexible
I've had this book since it came out and I am still recommending it to people. The work-outs can be adjusted for different fitness levels but they will take you as far as you want to go. You can't really outgrow this book.
I like the way it is broken up into phases- strength, cardio- this is better than doing the same mix throughout the year. Stretching and flexibility are not forgotten either.
My beginner friends liked the introduction to pyramiding reps (a good trick to increase puul-up/push-up reps)and the fact that you don't need to be in a gym every day. Quite a lot can be done outdoors or at home.

I run across very few other work out schedules that can be used for such a range of fitness levels. It isn't gimicky or sport specific, it's for all around fitness. ... Read more

Product Description
This manual, which comprises both a theoretical and a practical section, addresses itself to all who are interested in the many and various uses of step apparatus during functional fitness and health training. The theoretical section gives an overview of aims, types of training and programme structure as well as methods of teaching and arranging. In the practical sections, basic steps, combinations of steps, arm movements and arm formations are described, as well as standard techniques, and set out in the usual terms. The section on technique is rounded off with a description of functional strengthening and mobility exercises with and at the step apparatus. The step aerobics programmes thus elaborated aim, on the one hand, at training general dynamic endurance and co-ordination; on the other hand, programmes are introduced, which also train strength and mobility. The programmes are designed so that they can be transferred straight into a practical teaching programme. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs more careful editing.
This book has a lot that would be useful to a new HS coach, but unfortunately it seems that there was a lack of communication/checking between the author and the person who DTP'ed the diagrams. The diagrams contain many errors and inconsistencies which sometimes make it difficult to understand the plays and drills. Some arrows are missing or pointing in the opposite direction from what the descriptions indicate, offensive players are sometimes marked with an "X", diagrams occasionally show the ball going to one player while the description indicates a pass to a different player, etc.

Furthermore, the descriptions themselves could have been a little more detailed in places. It's clear that Coach Kuchar knows his basketball, but it's surprisingly difficult to explain basketball plays on paper, and I think this book would have benefited from a careful check by somebody who represents the target audience: a new coach with some understanding of the game but who doesn't already know what the author is trying to say.

My advice is to wait for the second edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Coaching High School Basketball : A Complete Guide to Building a Championship Team
This has everything a high school coach needs to run a sucessful program. It does not go into great depth as other books do, it is more concise and assumes you know the fundamentals. It has a great drill section and practice itinerary. You do not need your own practice plan-If you follow Bills plan your on the road to success.

Product Description

This book has been a big hit with physical educators since it came out in 1989. Now it's available in a new edition that keeps all the best features of the original, adds new material, and improves the presentation, all while making the information more affordable!

The new edition is split into two books--one for the elementary level and another for middle school--so you pay only for the lesson plans you need. Each book still provides developmentally appropriate lesson plans for every day of the school year plus information on how to organize classes to best implement the lessons. You can use the time you save on developing and organizing content to focus on providing quality teacher-learner interaction.

Both new books include an introductory section that explains basic motor development concepts and effective teaching strategies. With this background information fresh in your mind, it's easy to apply the ready-to-use lesson plans for maximum effectiveness. Other helpful features new to the second editions include

- new activities, including units on health (in keeping with the increased emphasis on health-related physical activity);
- unit summaries; and
- new artwork throughout.

Physical Education for Children: Daily Lesson Plans for Elementary School includes 437 lessons for grades K-5. (Physical Education for Children: Daily Lesson Plans for Middle School features 143 lessons for grades 6-8.) The activities become more challenging as you progress through the grade levels, and new activities are added at the higher levels. For each level, you'll find units of lesson plans on the following topics:

- Organization
- Fitness
- Games and Sports
- Rhythmic Activities
- Gymnastics
- Health
- Classroom Activities

The units on organization include both general concepts and sample lesson plans that demonstrate how to conduct classes that maximize students' opportunities to learn. The classroom activities are perfect to use on rainy days or as a teaching tool in a standard classroom curriculum.

The ready-to-use, fully illustrated lesson plans feature

- student objectives,
- lists of equipment needs,
- warm-up activities,
- skill development activities, and
- concluding activities.

You'll also find an appendix at the back of the book that provides rating scales and evaluation forms to help you conduct assessments.

The Physical Education for Children books make it easy for teachers to combine program planning, lesson plan development, and effective teaching practices to provide a quality physical education program. No elementary or middle school physical education teachers, especially new teachers, should be without them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing PE Resource
I am a first-time PE teacher and have found this resource to be extremely helpful. Lesson plans are outlined in detail beginning with the warm up, to key skills, to a cool down. Lessons are targeted for various age levels. It is well-organized and full of amazing PE lessons. I love the warm up ideas!

5-0 out of 5 stars PE Teacher's best friend!
This instructional book is fantastic. The detailed lesson plans for the whole year is very helpful. It's a PE teacher's best friend!

5-0 out of 5 stars A godsend!
In my first year of teaching PE, I needed some help in figuring out how to meet all of California's State Standards (they were new this year). This book became a valuable resource in planning out my classes.

I used their plan and then tailored it to meet my classes (I taught nine classes K-6). I was able to identify which standard the plan met and could cut and paste to meet the needs of my students. AS only having an outdoor area to work in, I was able to use most of the plans with what equipment I had. It did lack in outdoor activities for limited areas, but I used other resources for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very valuable resource!
This book provides practical and useful lessons as well as importantinformation about teaching at the middle school level. ... Read more
