Product Description
Joanne Wright wanted to go the Olympics. An amateur athlete, she had taken up the sport of rowing those long skinny boats and found that she was good at it. She also quickly learned that there were no rowing events for women in the Olympics. Why? Because the governing body for rowing in the United States viewed it as a man s sport and they would not sanction U.S. women to compete in international competitions. When the International Olympic Committee considered the addition of women s rowing to the Olympic program the various countries were asked if they would send a women s rowing team. The response from the US governing body for rowing had always been No because the men thought that women not only could not, but should not row. Joanne set about changing their minds. In 1963 she, Ted Nash an Olympic Gold Medalist training in Seattle Washington, and Edwin Lickiss, a dedicated coach of young rowers in Oakland California teamed up to form the National Womens Rowing Association (NWRA) to literally become their own governing body for women s rowing. By 1966 they organized and ran the first regatta to pick national champions even though at the time there were less than nine clubs and colleges available to race. This is Joanne s story of how three people communicating without the help of the Internet started new rowing programs, encouraged colleges to add women s crew programs, provided a venue for those colleges with intramural women s crews to start competing against one another, and proved to existing men s clubs that they should welcome women to their ranks of competitors. The 1976 Olympics in Montreal held the first rowing events for women. The United States team came home with a Bronze and Silver medal. ... Read more

Product Description

THE WONDER CREW is the fascinating story of how the salty coach of the Annapolis crew team, Coach Richard Glendon, seized the sport of rowing first from the Ivy League schools and then the imposing British with a new style both uniquely American and very much his own. He took a group of young midshipmen with humble origins and dominated a sport once the domain of the privileged.

After stunning the Ivy Leagues in race after race, the US Naval Academy team won a shot at the Olympics. Their task was nearly impossible: for hundreds of years, the British Navy ruled the world and their supremacy of the seas naturally made them dominant in the sport of rowing. With the hopes of a nation, Navy went into the heart of Europe and in thrilling fashion defeated the heavily favored Brits to win the gold medal in 1920. With Glendon's new American style, the US won Gold for forty straight years, the longest winning streak in any single sport in Olympic history.

Rich in history, with brave characters, American ingenuity, and dramatic training and competition, THE WONDER CREW is the first comprehensive account of the 1920 Olympic Navy crew team and their inspirational coach who forged the dramatic story of their quest for Olympic gold.

3-0 out of 5 stars For hard core rowing historians only
I'm a bit of a rowing geek, so I enjoyed this book. The background on rowing at the start of the 20th century, and the tradition of Navy crew and the Glendon family, inform anyone interested in the history of US rowing. The facts are quite well researched and interesting.

The writing disappointed me.Ms. Saint Sing tries too hard to make nearly every subtopic epic and amazing. Her language is often superlative without any real support in context or description for the superlatives. It's a good story, but I prefer rowing narrative that is more understated and lets the reader come up with his or her own emotions and conclusions.

For some examples of that kind of narrative, David Halberstam's The Amateurs is widely acclaimed and my favorite rowing book.Dan Boyne's historical works, including The Red Rose Crew and Kelly: A Father, A Son, An American Quest, are very fine works as well.Boyne conveys subtle points of rowing culture as well as broader points of social history without the grand overstatement of Saint Sing.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Wonder Crew," Great Read
The Wonder Crew magnificently covers the story of the coach and crew of the US Navy Academy in the early 20th century, their commitment to perfection in the art of rowing, and their pursuit of excellence in the 1920 Olympics where they upset the old order. The book is masterful and the story affirms how coaches, teachers, mentors often have an impact far beyond their immediate sphere.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST!
The Wonder Crew is simply put--a great read.It is well written, historically interesting, and brings together politics, sports, WWI and WWII.The Golden Age of Sports is at its best in Saint Sing's masterfully written book.Rowers will love it and anyone just looking for something new and different will like it too! ... High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Silken Suzette Laumann, MSC (born November 14, 1964 in Mississauga, Ontario) is a Canadian champion rower. Starting in 1976, Laumann won a number of awards, including a gold medal in quadruple sculls at the U.S. Championships, two gold medals in single sculls at the Pan American Games, a bronze medal at the 1984 Olympics in the double sculls with her sister Daniele. At the 1988 Olympics, Laumann finished seventh in the double scull. Laumann won a silver medal in single sculls at the 1990 World Championships, and the gold medal at the following year's World Championships. Arguably the most famous incident in Laumann's life was during her training leading up to the 1992 Summer Olympics. One of the odds-on favourites to capture a gold medal, her shell was involved in a collision with the boat of German coxless pair team Colin von Ettinghausen and Peter Hoeltzenbein on May 15, 1992. ... Tim Foster brings vividly to life what it's like to be one of four headstrong, and at times conflicting, personalities, and reveals how close they all came to implosion as the Sydney Olympics approached.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wanted Rowing Coach
I enjoyed Brad Lewis's account of his coaching experiences at UCSB. People who are familiar with rowing and do some coaching would enjoy it the most. He has a great sense of humor.Wanted:Rowing Coach

4-0 out of 5 stars For the rower
As a rower myself, I greatly enjoyed reading this book.It gave me a bit of insight into a coach's mind and into how I think about rowing.I don't know how someone without knowledge of the sport would feel reading this book because it doesn't give one great specifics about some rowing terms, but nothing one could not look-up.In that respect, it doesn't delve into lots of rowing terms so I don't think the non-rower would be overwhelmed. It was a fun read, written like a diary of the events of the day for a coach and his thoughts on what to change, how to understand his rowers, and how to make the most of a season.I don't know who edited this because there were a handful of grammatical errors that you will notice, but it really doesn't take away from the reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of rowing nuggets here!
Brad's book is a great read for rowers and crew coaches. He uses his excellent writing skills to combine a good story with lots of practical useable rowing drills and inspirational sayings. I would have loved having him as a coach. With all his superhuman coaching efforts, it was too bad his results were not better!

3-0 out of 5 stars Wanted: Rowing Coach
The story is a good one, particularly if you are looking for a crew to coach, but I found the book so poorly written I couldn't read it all.A good story deserves more attention to the writing than Mr. Lewis provided. Where were the editors?

5-0 out of 5 stars Another superb contribution to sports literature
Thanks again to Brad Alan Lewis for this entertaining and illuminating look at the sport of rowing, and athletics in general. This is a fitting post script to Brad's earlier work, Assault on Lake Casitas, which is one of the best books on high level athletics ever written. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Typical English sport hero bio
Steve Redgrave is an amazing rower. We get to learn something about the cost of his unparalleled Olympic achievements. But this is not a dramatic book, rather a somewhat rambling memoir, transcribed by Redgrave's cowriter.

If you're a huge Redgrave fan, rowing fanatic, or Olympic sport freak, get it.If you want to learn how to row, buy Redgrave's Complete Book of Rowing (or better yet, Frank Cunningham's Sculler at Ease, which covers sweeps too).If you want Olympic drama, buy The Amateurs by Halberstam or Assault on Lake Casitas by Brad Lewis. ... Product Description

With his last-gasp victory as part of the Great British coxless four team at the Athens Olympics, Matthew Pinsent clinched an historic fourth Olympic Gold to add to the three already won with his legendary rowing partner Steve Redgrave. In an uniquely exciting and evocative autobiography, Pinsent interweaves the build-up to Athens 2004 with the extraordinary story of his career and unforgettable partnership with Redgrave. Plucked from obscurity at the age of 20, told to partner his hero, and trained to within an inch of his life, Pinsent's story is uniquely revealing about what it takes to be a champion and the mixed blessings of success. Culminating with a nail-biting final chapter detailing the team's extraordinary victory in Athens in blow-by-blow detail, A Lifetime in a Race is a sports book in a different mould.

2-0 out of 5 stars From a rower's perspective, not so great
There are some very good segments in Matthew Pinsent's autobiography, A Lifetime in Race, particularly his rower's-eye-view of the Olympics.Unfortunately, while these bits made for an interesting excerpt in Rowing News, they don't really justify a whole book. The pacing and style of the prose bothered me enough that I probably wouldn't recommend the book to someone who didn't already have an interest in British Olympic Rowing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This book isn't a biography at all. It covers Pinsent's career of rowing from his teenage years where he first began to his 4th Olympic Gold.Considering it was a decent sized book I got through it in about a week or so.A very enjoyable read and something rowers will love. Right up there with Assault and the Amateurs. ... Read more

"Astonishing . . . Moving . . . One of the best books ever written about a sport."
 *Walter Clemons
Newsweek

"A PENETRATING, FASCINATING AND REMARKABLY SUSPENSEFUL NARRATIVE."
 *David Guy
Chicago Tribune
In The Amateurs, David Halberstam once again displays the unique brand of reportage, both penetrating and supple, that distinguished his bestselling The Best and the Brightest and October 1964. This time he has taken for his subject the dramatic and special world of amateur rowing. While other athletes are earning fortunes in salaries and-or endorsements, the oarsmen gain fame only with each other and strive without any hope of financial reward.
What drives these men to endure a physical pain known to no other sport? Who are they? Where do they come from? How do they regard themselves and their competitors? What have they sacrificed, and what inner demons have they appeased? In answering these questions, David Halberstam takes as his focus the 1984 single sculls trials in Princeton. The man who wins will gain the right to represent the United States in the 84 Olympiad; the losers will then have to struggle further to gain a place in the two- or four-man boats. And even if they succeed, they will have to live with the bitter knowledge that they were not the best, only close to it.
Informative and compelling, The Amateurs combines the vividness of superb sportswriting with the narrative skills of a Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST!
It simply does not get any better than Halberstam. For me, he had the knack of taking a topic I had no interest in (Ho Chi Minh, The NBA's Portland Trail Blazers, and now ROWING) and within a few pages getting me totally engrossed in the story. I cannot recommend this book enough

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, detailed, riveting story
I too found this book on a used book table some years back, and a quick glimpse inside, plus having read some of Halberstam's other work, made buying it a no-brainer.It was hard to put down until the end.I rowed competitively for four years in college in Philadelphia (with its Boat House Row and grand rowing tradition), and also did a little club sculling and ocean racing in beach patrol rescue boats. It's hard to overstate how perceptive and engaging this portrait of these men and their sport is.It brought it all back--the early mornings, rowing home after dark, running stairs indoors during winter--even the disappointment of coming up short when you've given it all you have and then some.It also conveys the satisfaction that comes of learning how far you can push and learn about yourself, even when winning's not involved. It's nice to see that Mr Halberstam succeeded so well in connecting with readers who didn't row themselves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Peeked my curiostiy and glad I read it.
I was curious because the rowing events of the '84 Olympics took place not too far from my house. This book was well-written and brought a less popular Olympic sport to life.Mr. Halberstam did a great job of educating those of us who aren't fans about the amount of work and dedication it takes to participate in a sport that only seems to matter every four years.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed fan of Halberstam
I am a big fan of David Halberstam.Like his other books, this one was well written, but I just could not get into the subject matter. The main characters that he follows were uninteresting and pretty one dimnesional in their rowing obsession.Halberstam seems to worship their dedication to a sport that few care about, but I find their masochistic pleasure in continuous pain and lonely training quite odd and certainly not anything heroic.I think that if I had been a rower at some point in my athletic career instead of a track athlete and soccer player, I would have enjoyed this book more. We've all heard the term "too much inside baseball."For me this book was too much "inside rowing" and did not translate into a broader experience for fans of other sports.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great writing, sad story
Really well written, but a depressing story. I finished the book without any happy illusions about the sport, or sports in general. Nevertheless, a valuable story about the human spirit. ... Read more

Product Description
"In 1975, a group of amazing women rowed their way to international success and glory, battling sexual predjudice, bureaucracy, and male domination in one of the most grueling and competitive sports around. Among the members of the first international women's crew team-and one of the first women's teams anywhere-were Gail Pearson, the soft-spoken MIT professor who fought equally hard off the water to win the political battles necessary for her team to succeed; lead rower Carie Graves, a statuesque bohemian from rural Wisconsin who dropped out of college and later became the most intense rower of the crew; and Lynn Silliman, a tiny sixteen-year-old coxswain from California.

On hand to guide them was Harry Parker, the legendary Harvard men's crew coach who overcame his doubts about the ability of women to withstand the rigors of hard training. From their first dramatic bid at the 1975 World Championships to their preparations for their first Olympic Games in 1976, this gripping story of bravery, determination, and indomitable spirit catures a compelling moment in the history of sports and America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful True Story of Female Athletes Making History
This book is great read.I am a rower and former coach but this book is written for rowers and non-rowers alike to enjoy. The author pulls you into another time when femle rowers (as many other female athletes of the time) were fighting to compete at an elite, international level in a male-dominated sport. The true story is told as a part of both college athletics' and Olympic history. The challenges both on and off of the water that these women and their coaches faced are shared so clearly that you feel you are actually watching it unfold. While I knew a lot about many of the key players from other books, and rowing connections, I learned even more about these inspiring individuals that laid the foundation for so many rowers and athletes to train and compete at the highest levels since.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent women rowing story
Very inspiring tale of women of various ages battling male chauvinism and their own physical abilities in rowing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Women, guts, glory, and a story
I am the proud parent of a stroke rower. This story, of very different women, from widely geographic and psychological backgrounds, all coming together to do something no one had done before, is mesmorizing and grabs at every heartstring I have. The forward is equally compelling.I have met one of the Yale rowers in this story, and believe me, if she did half the stuff she is credited doing, I have even more admiration for her. This book taught me a bit about rowing, some equipment nuances, and training techniques. It gave me several nights of wonderful pleasure, some laughs, some tears. Now that this sport, like most others, is so scientific, so over studied (I guess we have the east germans to thank for that), it largely selects the athletes by performance. But the 'Red Rose Crew' had that intangible:spirit and guts. That doesn't always show up on ERG scores, or height charts.I am so glad I read this, and was able to share it with my daughter. The writing is clear, concise, and both narrative and dialogue where appropriate.Great work.

4-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational, albeit brief, history of women's rowing
I purchased the Red Rose Crew both as a rowing coach and coxswain. I had heard of the book before but never read it. While it was a relatively quick read, it did provide some good insight into how women's rowing has evolved since the 1970s. It gave some wonderful descriptions of the various struggles the women went through, as well as the individuals who helped them along their way.

It would be really nice to see a sequel, or something similar, that documents what women's rowing has become in the past twenty or so years. There is a decent follow-up of the individuals from the team at the end of the book, but I feel like I could have easily stomached another 100+ pages of what has happened since then.

All in all, a good read and a good book to have if you know anything about rowing, and specifically women's rowing at the collegiate level and beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars So much more than just a rowing story .....
If you love rowing, if you love sports, if you're interested in historical moments .... this book is wonderful.I have read it and re-read it.I have lent it and gifted it.This is the true story of several remarkable women athletes. It is extremely well written and takes you through the story with grace and passion.I think I'll go read it again! ...
