Product Description
Campaign Finance Reform and the Future of the Democratic Party offers a new interpretation of the dynamics of the American political system. Focusing on the decline of the Democratic Party, Schneider explains how campaign finance reform would help Democrats to reverse the decades-long decline in their voter base by funding popular programs. The constant chase for campaign cash has forced Democratic politicians to concentrate on the needs of myriad special interest groups, scattering their attention across a number small issues of limited interest to most citizens. Schneider argues that this keeps them from uniting behind the kinds of broad, widely supported progressive plans that have always energized the Democratic base and won over support from middle and working class voters. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simultaneously Gripping and Troubling
I had the pleasure of studying political economy with Professor Schneider as an undergraduate during the final stages of this book's production. Although I do not own a copy, I have read it in manuscript form. Prof. Schneider's book first relates the decline in American productivity over the past few decades to the lack of social mechanisms to support productivity growth. He then goes on to demonstrate how the traditional Democratic support base is eroding as the Democratic party switches its focus from providing these social mechanisms to satisfying special interests.

The book is clearly written, and his point is very well argued, drawing examples from issues ranging from national defense to public education and childcare. I highly suggest this to anyone, of any political affiliation, who is interested in a troubling yet gripping thesis about why the Democratic party is losing its once dominant power in American politics.

--
Interestingly, I wrote this review prior to the November 2002 elections.Prof. Schneider's thesis, also developed and published well prior to 2002, is almost a perfect fit to what many pundits and critics claim to be the reason for the Democrat's inability to pickup midterm seats. This book has turned out to be particularly prescient in that respect. ... Product Description
Subverting the System deals with an issue of fundamental importance, namely the internal evolution of the regime in the final years of Soviet power. In particular the book examines the contradictory approaches taken by Gorbachev in relation to the role and organization of the Communist Party, contradictions that effectively paralyzed the party as a functioning political organization and that ultimately provoked a dynamic that led to the fall of the system in its entirety. ... Product Description
This book charts the political transformation of Britain that resulted from the 'Great' Reform Act of 1832. It argues that this extensively debated parliamentary reform, aided by the workings of the New Poor Law (1834) and Municipal Corporations Act (1835), moved the nation far closer to a 'modern' type of representative system than has previously been supposed. Drawing on hitherto neglected local archives and the records of election solicitors, Dr Salmon demonstrates how the Reform Act's practical details, far from being mere 'small print', had a profound impact on borough and county politics. Combining computer-assisted electoral analysis with traditional methods, he traces the emergence of new types of voter partisanship and party organisation after 1832, and exposes key differences between the parties which resulted in a remarkable national recovery by the Conservative party. In passing he provides important new perspectives on issues such as MPs' relations with their constituents, the expense and culture of popular politics after 1832, the electoral impact of railway development, and the role of'deference voting' in the counties. Dr PHILIP SALMON is a Research Fellow at the History of Parliament, University of London. ... Read more

Excerpt: Burning of Parliament is the popular name for the fire which destroyed the Palace of Westminster, the home of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, on 16 October 1834. The blaze, which started from overheated chimney flues, spread rapidly throughout the medieval complex and developed into the biggest conflagration to occur in London since the Great Fire of 1666, attracting massive crowds. The fire lasted for many hours and gutted most of the Palace, including the converted St Stephen's Chapel (the meeting place of the House of Commons), the Lords Chamber, the Painted Chamber and the official residences of the Speaker and the Clerk of the House of Commons. Westminster Hall and a few other parts of the old Houses of Parliament survived the blaze and were incorporated into the New Palace of Westminster, which was built in the Gothic style over the following decades. The fire was caused by the destruction of tally sticks. The account of this event is due to the English novelist Charles Dickens, as described in a book by Tobias Dantzig. Speaking at a conference on governmental reform, Dickens told how counting devices destroyed "the halls of government". Long before Dickens' time, literate clerks of the Exchequer ceased to use tally sticks. In 1724, Treasury officials commanded that tallies no longer be used, but they long remained valid. Said Dickens: ... it took until 1826 to get these sticks abolished. In 1834 ... there was a considerable accumulation of them. ... hat was to be done with such worn-out worm-eaten, rotten old bits of wood? The sticks were housed in Westminster, and it would naturally occur to an...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=319149 ... Read more

Product Description

At first glance, campaign finance reform looks like a good idea. McCain-Feingold, for instance, regulates campaigns by prohibiting national political parties from accepting soft money contributions from corporations, labor unions, and wealthy individuals. But are such measures, or any of the numerous and similarly restrictive proposals that have circulated through Washington in recent years, really good for our democracy?

John Samples says no, and here he takes a penetrating look into the premises and consequences of the long crusade against big money in politics. How many Americans, he asks, know that there is little to no evidence that campaign contributions really influence members of Congress? Or that so-called negative political advertising actually improves the democratic process by increasing voter turnout and knowledge? Or that limits on campaign contributions make it harder to run for office, thereby protecting incumbent representatives from losing their seats of power?

Posing tough questions such as these, Samples uncovers numerous fallacies beneath proposals for campaign finance reform. He argues that our most common concerns about money in politics are misplaced because the ideals implicit in our notion of corruption are incoherent or indefensible. The chance to regulate money in politics allows representatives to serve their own interests at a cost to their constituents. And, ironically, this long crusade against the corruption caused by campaign contributions allows public officials to reduce their vulnerability by suppressing electoral competition.

Defying long-held ssumptions and conventional political wisdom, The Fallacy of Campaign Finance Reform is a provocative and decidedly nonpartisan work that will be essential for anyone concerned about the future of American government.

Product Description
The essays in this volume address the industrial, commercial, urban and regional reforms of China's planned economy during the 1980s. The emphasis is on the dominating institutional and bureaucratic presence of the state even as it sought to loosen the pre-1979 vertically structured centralised command system and to introduce some market principles to stimulate economic activity. The essays fall into four categories: theoretical and policy discussions and debates at the central leadership level; reform of the urban economy and of inter-regional relations; industrial and commercial reforms; and the rise and position of the new entrepreneurial class. Many of the essays draw on interviews with Chinese economic officials in the Central China city of Wuhan and therefore this is the only study that uses local data on actual operations of reforms from a Chinese city; the other sources are the Chinese press and Chinese official and scholarly journals. In each of the categories there are pieces from different points in the chronological process of reform. This study begins with the first theoretical discussions among China's economists and top political leaders in the late 1970s and concludes with experiments with bankruptcy and stock markets in the late 1980s. The countervailing heavy presence of the state at both the policy and the practical levels throughout the reform decade is its unifying theme. ... Read more
