Excerpt: Prince Edward Island's geography is mostly pastoral with red soil, white sand, and scattered communities. Known as the "Garden of the Gulf", the island is located in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence north of Nova Scotia and east of New Brunswick, with which it forms the Northumberland Strait. The island has two urban areas. Harbor, situated centrally on the island's southern shore, and consists of the capital city Charlottetown, as well as suburban towns Cornwall and Stratford and a developing urban fringe. A smaller urban area surrounds Summerside Harbor, situated on the southern shore 40 kilometers west of Charlottetown Harbor, and consists primarily of the city of Summerside. As with all natural harbors on the island, Charlottetown and Summerside harbors are created by rias. (See also a list of communities in Prince Edward Island.) The island's landscape is pastoral: rolling hills, pristine forests, white sand beaches, ocean coves and the famous red soil have given Prince Edward Island a reputation as a province of outstanding natural beauty. A number of laws have been passed by the provincial government to attempt to preserve the landscape through regulation, although the lack of consistent enforcement and absence of province-wide zoning and land-use planning has resulted in some aesthetically displeasing development in recent years. The island's lush landscape has had a strong bearing not only on its economy but also its culture. Author Lucy Maud Montgomery drew inspiration from the land during the late Victorian Era for the setting of her classic novel Anne of Green Gables. Today, many of the same qualities that Mon...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=17947647 ... Read more

Product Description
To its inhabitants, Prince Edward Island is not so much a place as a special way of life. Throughout the Island's history, Islanders have planted their roots deep in the undulating, verdant countryside. Indeed, for 200 years the family farm tradition in this 'Million Acre Farm', this 'Garden of the Gulf', has been the backbone of PEI society, reflecting in the Island's political, social, and cultural institutions. Agriculture has dominated the island, and even its other major industries, such as fishing, shipbuilding, fox farming, and indigenous manufacturing, have always been marked by an unmistakably rural character, as have the self-sufficient villages with their churches, schools, community halls, and small businesses; the larger towns; and Charlottetown, the capital city. While modern technology and political centralization have dictated radical changes in the traditional agricultural milieu, there remains on part of most Islanders a determination to preserve their Island's pastoral serenity. Wayne Barrett. Anne MacKay, and Francis W.P.Bolger portray in word and picture the rich heritage that is Prince Edward Island's history and its way of life. ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Prince Edward Island," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Prince Edward Island in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Prince Edward Island when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Prince Edward Island, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Excerpt: Prince Edward Island (PEI or P.E.I.; French: , Scottish Gaelic: Eilean a' Phrionnsa) is a Canadian province consisting of an island of the same name, as well as other islands. The maritime province is the smallest in the nation in both land area and population (excluding the territories). The island has a few other names: "Garden of the Gulf" referring to the pastoral scenery and lush agricultural lands throughout the province; and "Birthplace of Confederation", referring to the Charlottetown Conference in 1864. According to the 2009 estimates, Prince Edward Island has 141,000 residents. It is located in a rectangle defined roughly by 46°47°N, and 62°64°30W and at 5,683.91 km (2,194.57 sq mi) in size, it is the 104th largest island in the world, and Canada's 23rd largest island. The island was named for Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn (17671820), the fourth son of King George III and the father of Queen Victoria. Prince Edward Island is located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence west of Cape Breton Island, north of the Nova Scotia peninsula, and east of New Brunswick. Its southern shore bounds the Northumberland Strait. The island has two urban areas. A much smaller urban area surrounds Summerside Harbour, situated on the southern shore 40 km (25 mi) west of Charlottetown Harbour, and consists primarily of the city of Summerside. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Wood Islands is a Canadian rural farming and fishing community located in southeastern Queens County, Prince Edward Island on the Northumberland Strait. The population of the community is unavailable as a result of its small size; Wood Islands falls under the larger township Lot 62, which has a population (1996) of 555 residents. It takes its name from several small forested islands located several hundred metres offshore in the Northumberland Strait. Product Description
