Product Description
Inspire animated discussions of questions that concern kids—and all of us—with this innovative, interactive book. Open your students' minds to the wonders of philosophy. Allow them to grapple with the questions philosophers have discussed since the ancient Greeks. Questions include: "Who are your friends?" "Can computers think?" "Can something logical not make sense?" "Can you think about nothing?" Young minds will find the range of 40 questions to be both entertaining and informative. If you have ever wondered about questions like these, you are well on the way to becoming a philosopher!

Philosophy for Kids offers young people (ages 10 and up) the opportunity to become acquainted with the wonders of philosophy. Packed with exciting activities arranged around the topics of Values, Knowledge, Reality, and Critical Thinking, this book can be used individually or by the whole class. Each activity allows kids to increase their understanding of philosophical concepts and issues and enjoy themselves at the same time.

In addition to learning about a challenging subject, students philosophizing in a classroom setting as well as the casual reader of Philosophy for Kids will sharpen the ability to think critically about these and similar questions. Experiencing the enjoyment of philosophical thought enhances a young person's appreciation for the importance of reasoning throughout the traditional curriculum of subjects.

The book includes activities, teaching tips, a glossary of terms, and suggestions for further reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Philosophy for kids.
Have just begun to use the book. The kids seem to be enthusiastic about the topics.Trying to determine the best way to use the material.Very optomistic is all I can say for now.Check in a few months for better evaluation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Philosophy For Kids: Order it Now!
Having had a personal interest in Philosophy, as well as looking to inspire higher level thinking in the 4th grade curriculum, my search through Amazon's choices brought me to one standout possibility: Philosophy for Kids. After looking it over here on Amazon, I decided it looked very unique and user friendly, which is essential to me as a NYC schoolteacher with little time to spare.

From day one, this book made for a smash-bang hit in my classroom.I was floating on air as the students, most of whom had never heard of Philosophy before, left my classroom absolutely exuberant after its first lesson. They were literally bursting out, "I LOVE Philosophy!", and when I replied, "Well, I love that you love Philosophy", another replied, "I love Philosophy more than you love that I love Philosophy!" (We were already into deep territory!)In addition, I myself was able to enjoy and learn more about one of my favorite topics with the children, adding the experience of rich sharing to yet another subject.

I really appreciate the book's thoughtful and flexible organization as well; my students love the way the exercises that are built into every chapter set us up for the discussion to follow. I have divided my class into "Philosophy Groups" where they can later share their extended reactions. The section in the back of the book for teachers on each chapter is very helpful for me to read just before(or even while!)we have our session.

The parents are absolutely delighted with this being included weekly as enrichment curriculum. My fourth graders continue to be fascinated by the content, and conversations arise that challenge us all and raise the thinking to an almost dizzying level. Philosophers that we study, one by one, are added to our ongoing "Heroes" chart. Plus, it is extremely uplifting to find how often the questions discussed find their way into other lessons; further proving its worth as a critical thinking boost.

I teach in the gifted program, which at times inspires a too-competitive and sometimes stress-inducing component, so I found it of interest that several of the children commented what they really love about it is that they can openly express how they think, and that there is not a "right or wrong" answer.

I also hold afterschool sessions for general education. Those students noticed some of the philosophy material, and expressed an interest. I now provide them with the weekly investigations, and they too are becoming philosophy fans. Let me assure the reader that this material can be exactly what the doctor ordered for all students, regardless of "classification".

In addition, understanding our mutual pressures for time as educators, I want to point out that the philosophical explorations also serve as material for read alouds, listening passage comprehension, guided or shared reading, written responses, and history. Using these selections can be a great enhancement to the quality of your curriculum.Highly recommended for all. Thanks, Dr. White!

4-0 out of 5 stars Should do the trick
I plan on using this with my Latin I people this coming school year.I think they should have a little Greek philosophy in the culture mix. This looks like it will work well. The lessons are neat little nuggets that I can use independently of each other.

I had trouble last year explaining what a fallacy was.We read the chapter in "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" called "love is a Fallacy" which I think they enjoyed, but it felt a tad tangential and they STILL didn't really get it.

This is a bit more on subject.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too open ended for kids
I bought this book to read with my nine-year old daughter. Lots of great questions posed, but we found they weren't explored deeply enough for our satisfaction. One could argue that this is precisely the purpose of the book, ie to encourage further discussion, but we're both quite new to the field of philosophy and lack the training and tools for a deep evaluation of the issues. Another book, Philosophy Rocks (Law), offers far deeper analyses (of admittedly fewer questions), but left us far more satisfied and inspired.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really is fun!
While I have always been moderately entertained by the metaphysical, it has never been something I would quite describe as 'fun'. Until now that is! The chapter on existentialism tickled me rotten and the 'Wittgenstein game' caused uproar at my son's birthday party! If you want to keep the kids entertained for the day (and simultaneously teach them concepts of modal realism) look no further...

Product Description
In this, the follow-up to the best-selling Philosophy for Kids, Dr. David White delves deeper into the philosophical questions kids (and adults) care about deeply. Through vibrant discussions and debate, the book offers ways teachers can help students grapple with age-old questions about the nature of friendship (Aristotle), time (Augustine), knowledge (Plato), existence of God (Aquinas), perception (Berkeley), freedom and society (Rousseau), and many more.

The book is divided into three sections. Part 1 presents primary source readings that will encourage discussion and debate; Part 2 offers easy-to-use activities that focus on the direct application of philosophy to areas such as critical thinking, language, and the arts; and Part 3 offers a unique perspective just for teachers—a philosophical look at how teachers can become more reflective philosophers themselves. This is an excellent teachers’ handbook for using advanced philosophy in the classroom.

3-0 out of 5 stars A gripe parents should be aware of
While I do think this book is beautifully organized, covers some neat topics, it is post-modern flavored (Bell Hooks, Heidegger, Sartre). It has no analytic philosophy or the historic tie ups of classical problems. For instance, it has Berkeley, but not none of the accepted answered to his problem.

I would include: Bertrand Russell's how to be happy, G.E. Moore's proof of the external world, and Daniel Dennett's free will argument. All 3 of these topics tackles very big questions and are very enjoyable reads.

3-0 out of 5 stars Classroom Teacher's Guide
I bought this book to use for a homeschool subject with my 2 teenage kids. Although this book seems well written, its sole purpose is as a discussion guide for a classroom teacher. [...]. It just is not that kind of book. I wish it was. I would not recommend this book as a homeschool resource. However, it may be great as a high school teacher's guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars My teenage son read it voluntarily - just what a mom hopes for!
I bought this book and left it sitting in a conspicuous location. My 13-year-old son picked it up and started reading it, and then he read more, and even more! He found it to be engaging while also being educational.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible! Should be Part of Every School's Curriculum!!
I got this book on Friday and finished it by Saturday morning. I started using it with my son, age 8, on Saturday, and it really brought a whole new dimension to our discussions about literature! And 8 years old is definitely not too young to be thinking bigger and more critically about the world around you. A group setting would definitely make for a more lively discussion and probably more interesting too. Given the chance, kids will bring up a lot of interesting points! I highly recommend this book to teachers and parents, anyone who wants to develop their child's thinking ability beyond the banality of what's offered in most schools today. I can see once you get this under your belt you'll be able to stir-up more interesting and thought provoking conversations with your child! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Philosophy in the real world
When my 11 year old son brought home his sixrg grade "suggested reading" kust, this book was one of the recommenfations. We could not agree more with that choice after having gone through the creative stories within which the rich ideas of several philosophies have neen woven and clearly explained. This is a book that one comes back to in order to answer everyday questions and solve daily problems. This book should be read by evry 11 year old, as well as by their parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars New ideas for children
This book fills a void between original children's stories and the ideas that hold them tohethedr. It is a great learning experience for children who, for the most part, have never been exposed to the rich ideas of philsophy and can now relate to these concepts through storoes that they can enjoy reading and retelling.

1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
The font was extremely difficult to read. The topics covered do not adequately represent even the major areas of philosophy. Assuming the reader survives the eye straining font, he or she might walk away with the impression that Socrates' ideas are all about secular humanism and modern liberalism.Included in this book are discussions of Zen Buddhism, being kind to trees, and the hackneyed "diversity is good." ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Too elementary
I purchased this product to use with my high school students but I immediately sent it back when I looked inside to see it was far too elementary for my students. Would be great for the elementary school teacher. NOT for middle or high school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Relevant
This is the kind of book kids should be reading to build their character for tough times ahead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tool for classroom, scouts, or counselors
I have used this book with my own kids, as a counselor and in the school setting. It is a great tool for getting kids to think about character traits and their own choices and behaviors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Parent Should Get This Book
I have a 7 year old daughter and I decided to purchase this book to see if I could use it to help her learn good character traits and morals without the religious overtone. It has worked out great! It's supposed to be for slightly older kids but I just work with her a little more slowly.I spend time reading the sections to her and after each paragraph, I pause to see if she has any questions. If she does then I spend the time to explain what she doesn't understand. At the end of each section there is an interactive part which encourages further thinking and discussion between us.She loves it now and practically begs me to learn more about good character. What's even better is she is learning and practicing it now.Soon, I'm going to have to get another book like this, which will more than likely be by the same publisher. This is an excellent book.Don't hesitate getting it.It will be one of the best things you, as a parent, will do with your child. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Social-emotional learning
This book is definately a plus for educators and requires adult facilitation, especially for the younger range. We use this book, along with the leader's guide (5 stars!) as a tool in our violence prevention curriculum in an after-school setting. Perhaps it's too "politically correct" to teach kids to respect each other and include others to build frienships, and to be reflective on their own behaviors, but some kids need to hear this message.

4-0 out of 5 stars A "How-To" to help kids develop their character
Character education is a hot topic, and this book provides activities and resources that educators can easily adapt for use in the classroom. At our school, we began to develop our own program and were looking for a way tocontinue our activities.

What I liked best about this book was itsemphasis on having the child evaluate his or her own character, and thenselecting those "character muscles" to develop further, such ascaring, fairness, honesty, etc. It also included several self-assessmentsfor the child to complete that help in determining strengths and areas forimprovement. Our school plans to use this book as a resource for teachersand students this coming year, and we look forward to the release of theLeader's Guide.

I'd rate it 5 stars for educators, but fewer stars forparents. While its activities are certainly adaptable in either setting, Iwonder how effective it would be for a parent to work from a book inteaching a child about character.I prefer stories to read with your childand then discuss. This seems too academic for home use.Would beinterested to see what parents think who've used this. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Joy Says Children Should Follow the Rules
This is one of Joy Berry's "Survival Series for Kids" books and I have to confess that my son Devon and I like them all. I've had them in storage for years, way before Devon was a twinkle in my eye, or my gal Sara's, and I'm glad I saved them.

In this book Ms. Berry and illustrator Bartholomew, with your help will tell your child why it's important to be good. Ms. Berry will show your toddler, or slightly older child, why it is important to follow certain rules, both spoken and unspoken ones. Your child will learn why rules exist and some important reasons for having them.

I have to admit, because I'm the kind of person who doesn't like rules, that Ms. Berry has a point, rules are important for a child. Especially rules like don't go out in the street without holding Mom or Dad's hand. I teach my child rules, it's important he obey them, because they are important for his safety. When he gets older and can make his own mind up, then he can decide which ones to break and why, but for now rules are not made to be broken.

Though this book was written over twenty years ago, it still stands up. The excellent comic book type illustrations will keep your child interested as you read along with him or her. And for the life of me I don't know why these books are not easier to get. Joy Berry is good for children, that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. If you can get a hold of her books and share them with your child, you'll both be better for it. ... Read more

Inspired by the many readers of Chicken Soup for the Kid's Soul (one of many in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series), the authors decided to reach out to young people at that incredibly confusing, exciting chapter of life, the preteen years. Readers between the ages of 9 and 12 (give or take a year) sometimes felt that the book for kids was too young, while the edition for teens (Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul) was too old. In this warm, supportive anthology of true stories by and about preteens, the very issues that seem so complicated and insurmountable are addressed with intelligence and openness. Divorce, violence, death, friendships, school, family, attitudes, changes, dreams... preteens have a lot to offer and a lot to learn on these subjects. Many of the brief essays, cartoons, quotations, and introductions are witty as well as wise and touching; readers might devour the book from start to finish, drop in for a story here and there, or focus on a concern that is most important at the moment. The preteen years seem to be the perfect time to reach kids, before they are lost in teen angst and coolness. And who better to learn from than their own peers? For some added incentive to read, celebrities such as Mia Hamm, Karl Malone, and 'N Sync have contributed essays as well. (Ages 9 to 13) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stories to read with your preteen.
It is sometimes hard to find things to do with your preteen. They are at an age when they want more independence from mom and dad. This book is a great connection - you can cozy up and read a few selections at a time - it's a great way to have fun, and spend time bonding with your preteen. You can then use the stories, or lessons learned for great conversation pieces for discussion. ... Read more

Product Description
Government Schools Are Bad for Your Kids is a devastating critique of K-12 government schools and an urgent plea for parents to withdraw their kids for their own good and the good of the nation. For over fifty years, the schools have been the subject of harsh criticism from the left and the right. Yet, all reform efforts have failed since the special interests have blocked various school choice proposals. After too many decades of failed promises, it is time to declare America's experiment in government schools a failure. It is time to pull the plug. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Timely Book About Government Control
If you're wondering how health care will look under increased government control, look no further than our schools (and this book).

The result of public control is a mediocre product that people tolerate because it's "free", and because most can't afford the better option (since so much of their money-- taxes--- is already going to pay for the "free" option).

Those who can afford it often escape the inferior product by paying additionally for a better one. A private one. So they pay twice; mandated taxes for the lesser, then additional money for the one the really want.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't take education for granted.
This book is a must read for all parents with school age children.Children deserve the best education possible.Parents owe it to themselves, and their children, to not take education for granted and to evaluate all of the options available. The advice in this book can literally change lives. It is the perfect Christmas gift for parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buyer's Guide to Government Schools
"Government Schools are Bad for Your Kids" is an excellent first book to present to those who have woken up to the fact that something is wrong with America, but can't put their finger on it.It is a great book to hand to parents to encourage them to think about the education they 'purchase' for their children.

The book is relatively short, quick to read and to the point. It reads like a consumer guide for parents deciding on where to send their kids to be instructed. One choice of which (which this book is focused on) is government schools, which every parent should evaluate as a price vs. benefit purchase, as any other item in life: housing, food, clothing, etc.

Although government schooling is 'free', or rather everyone is forced to pay for it anyway, whether he likes it or not, the benefits at this price are not desirable as Ostrowski points out. He encourages parents to 'shop around' and compare what other options are, despite having to pay for it on top of the mandatory government school tax, to see what is most beneficial to their families. He makes the case that in the long run, other than government schooling is cheaper with better results.

Although I found the book did not have much new to say to convince me, it will not be shocking to those who still support or are concerned with government schools. If fact, that seems to be the point: to not overly alarm the reader. Also, the book doesn't really give a whole lot of esoteric knowledge. Most of what Ostrowski says everyone knows about anyway, but nobody acknowledges it, especially not the bureaucrats. His service is he points out the obvious facts and backs them up with lesser known facts, quotations and data.

Who should get this book:people who recently got involved with the Tea Party Movement, 9/12ers, Ron Paul supporters, libertarians who have friends of child bearing age to hand a short book to them, etc. This is especially a must for homeschoolers who still have un-supporting or critical family members or friends, to help explain their decisions.

If you are for encouraging the educational free market, and want to help communicate that to your family, friends and acquaintances, this book is a good tool for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing resource!
I taught special needs kids in high school and I would have had a very difficult time had it not been for the Fay/Cline Love and Logic series!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
As a parent and a school counselor I highly recommend this book and all the resources from Love and Logic. They are excellent tools for parents and teachers. In case you are turned off by the thought that they might be a Christian organization - They are not, nor do their books promote or discuss anything related to Christianity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent program
B. Breaux obviously has a personal vendetta against the Love & Logic organization simply because they are Christian.Any product on Amazon that is Love & Logic will bear the same review from this person.I think it is plain to see who is the extremist in the equation.
Love & Logic has worked beautifully for our home and family and just simply makes sense. As the parents of 4, one with special needs, we can testify that it is great. ... Read more
