Editorial Review Product Description Each entry includes a vivid color photograph and a series of subcategories, including growth habits, petals, habitat, and distribution. The roots ofbotanical names are traced for descriptive meanings. Occasional notesallow the author's voice into the proceedings, and the prose is ofteninadvertently poetic, as in this description of the habitat of theBulbophyllum antenniferum: "It normally grows as an epiphyte, usually onthe trunks of trees, but has been observed by the author growing onrocks in dappled light." Orchid enthusiasts beware: most of theplants shown here can only be grown in greenhouses. --Emily White Customer Reviews (1)

25. Barons, Brokers, and Buyers: The Institutions and Cultures of Philippine Sugar by Michael S. Billig | |

list price: US$51.00 -- used & new: US$27.87 (price subject to change: see help) Asin: 0824825616 Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France | Japan |
Editorial Review Product Description Michael Billig examines sugar's decline within both the dynamic context of contemporary Philippine society and the global context of the international sugar market. His multi-sited ethnographic analysis focuses mainly on conflicts among the various elite sectors (planters, millers, traders, commercial buyers, politicians) and concludes that the most salient political, economic, and cultural trend in the Philippines today is the decline of rural, agrarian elite power and the rise of urban industrial, commercial, and financial power. His reflections on his relationships with informants in the midst of the politically charged atmosphere that surrounds the sugar industry provide a candid look at the role of the observer who, try as he might to remain impartial, finds himself swept into the vortex of policy debates and power plays. Barons, Brokers, and Buyers will be of great interest to scholars and students of political economy and economic anthropology and to anyone interested in contemporary Philippine society. |

Editorial Review Product Description This compelling study of gender and sexual diversity in the Southern Philippines addresses general questions about the relationship between the making of gender and sexualities, the politics of national and ethnic identities and processes of cultural transformation in a world of contract labourers and transnational consumers. The book focuses, in particular, on the meaning and experience of local 'gays' -- transvestite/transgender-homosexual men -- who are at once celebrated as purveyors of beauty (defined in terms of a global American otherness) and valorized as impotent men and defiled women. In short, America functions both as a sign of their abjected status and as a space for imagining and reformulating various gendered identities. This innovative work -- one of the first ethnographic studies to be published in the aftermath of the region's civil unrest -- will be of interest to anyone working on gender, the body and sexuality. Not only does it extend the boundaries of cross-cultural studies of non-mainstream genders and sexualities by directly engaging the entanglement of local sensibilities with global images and discourse, but it also demonstrates that there is nothing ambiguous about ambiguity -- gendered, sexual or otherwise. Rather, this ambiguity is the specific product of different historical relations of power through which various cultural subjects are created and re-create themselves. Customer Reviews (2)
