The more important points are highlighted, which certainly enables a quick overview of the issues. There are, however, some deficiencies. The description and explanation of non-parametric statistics is insufficient, especially as it is common to have a clinical study population that is not normally distributed. The usefulness of non-parametric statistical tests could have been given much greater emphasis. The book could have been substantially shorter, a lot more readable, and with better graphics. Indeed, for a book that purports to provide guidance on how to present data, interpret data and lay out a manuscript, it brings into question the author's own ability to perform such a task! Nonetheless, it is a relatively inexpensive text and would probably be of use in medical academic hospital departments to guide the novice and reassure the experienced contributor. Guy J Maddern
