5-0 out of 5 stars Best review book for OKAPs and Boards
Concise, high yeild, great pictures, great adjunct to the BCSC. Once you've read the basic science books, you can crank through friedmans in a week or two and really retain the high yeild points. A must have to the ophthalmology resident's collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good addition
A good comprehensive review book.I think it is the best one on the market and recommend it to all of my fellow residents without reservation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Passed my boards w/ it!
I used this book to supplement the Will's review course for my study. There are a few things that are wrong in the book but overall the majority of the info is really good and the ultimate goal--passing the boards was achieved!I would've given 3 1/2 stars if able.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for OKAP Review and ophthalmolgy residency
This is a must have during your ophthalmology residency. Read and review this for OKAPs. Start early in your 1st yr.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of information
I bought this book and had it sent to my daughter. She had been studying for her COA and has now passed that test and is working on her COT - An excellent adjunctive study guide.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculously Simple
As it states on the cover of the book, "All the ophthalmology necessary for the non-ophthalmologists."Great introductory book for those without any exposure to ophthalmology. It is not enough practical information for medical students to impress anybody on an ophthalmology rotation beyond the first couple of days and certainly not enough to confidently work up all but the most obvious findings on your own.

In conclusion, great book for brief and succinct introduction to ophthalmology.Disagree with a prior review, poor book for ophthalmology rotation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eye-deal!!!
The bottom line with this text lies with reader expectations: if you want a light-weight, easy review of ophthalmic principles, this is the text for you. Complete with cartoon illustrations and acronyms, the author describes complex topics with a humorous, simplistic approach. Here-in lies Dr. Goldberg's talent: I am always impressed by an author who can express mundane, difficult topics in a memorable, easy manner. Don't be fooled though, the concepts are pertinent and, although a bit outdated, still very relevant to modern ophthalmic practice. This is obviously not an academic read, and to those in pursuit of a medical school text, this is not it. But for readers who want a light introduction/review of ophthalmic principles, it doesn't get much better than this...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for students interested in Ophthalmology
This is a very simple and easy to read book that gives you enough information to talk intelligently on your ophthalmology rotation. It is not enough to pass the OKAPS nor to get by in your residency.

It's a good book for students.

Wish me luck in the match!

4-0 out of 5 stars Ophthamology made ridiculously simpple
Ophthalmology Made Ridiculously Simple (Medmaster Ridiculously Simple)

I am an retired ophthalmologist who spends part of the year supervising medical students in Australia. I deliver a number of lectures under the title of Undergraduate Ophthalmology. Drs Goldberg and Trattler's little book is an admirable resource for both me and the students I teach. For undergraduates, eye diseasesare regarded as tiger country and this little book most certainly provides a splendid guide through the ocular jungle.
Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough review
I wanted to compare this book with the Wills Eye Manual. I think that this book is better than Wills in a few way, the first way being that it is more comprehensive and discusses topics that are not in Wills such as fistulas and many other eye disease that are missed by Wills. I still think Wills is more concise and an easier review however. Wills also has more current treatment options so I think owning them both is a good idea.

3-0 out of 5 stars 3rd edition improves on illustrations, not up to date on some topics
At this price range, the Mass Eye and Ear Manual of Ophthalmology is an adequate pocket reference for eye care practitioners. The 3rd edition has been expanded and is now better illustrated than its direct rival, the Manhattan Eye and Ear Color Atlas of Ophthalmology (the latter is noticeably less expensive, however).

Strengths:
1. Covers essentially the entire field of non-surgical ophthalmology in a compact and easy to read format.
2. Consistent layout and excellent illustrations.Great neuro-ophthalmic diagrams.
3. Outstanding reference for quick review.

Weaknesses:
1. Falls short of Wills Manual in terms of providing up to date therapy and diagnosis. The retinopathy of prematurity chapter still utilizes the old terminology of "rush" disease, although the newer term of Agressive Posterior ROP (AP-ROP) supplanted "rush disease" years ago.
2. Cannot be relied upon for treatment guidelines.Example: the authors list oral prednisone in the management of progressive outer retinal necrosis -- something that borders on malpractice in severely immunocompromized patients.I am not aware of any experts in the field of retina/uveitis who would endorse oral steroids in the treatment of progressive outer retinal necrosis.Furthermore, the initial regimen of antiviral agents described in the book is inadequate and will fail to control the spread of necrotizing retinitis in most of the cases.

Verdict:
Recommended with reservations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite Wills.....Chris Gilmartin, OD
This manual is definitely worth the money, however if I were forced to choose, I'd take the Wills Eye Manual. Some of the sections seem poorly organized and information can be hard to find.As another poster stated, the photos are excellent in quality. Not a bad choice for OD or ophthalmology residents, but I'd compare both before you buy if you are limited to one or the other.

Chris Gilmartin, OD

5-0 out of 5 stars This book and the Wills Manual are a must have for you on-call bag
An excellent handbook for clinical diagnosis and treatment, especially when alone in the ER in the middle of the night doing Ophtho consults.Probably not really for anyone but Ophthalmologists unless you are a primary care physician with no ophtho consultation avalable to you.Lots of full color pictures and bullet style diagnosis and treatment algorithms organized by system. It is the best $60 you'll spend as a general Ophthalmologist. Not really for test review or studying, just a quick primer on diagnosis and treatment of most eye problems.Should be standard issue on the first day of Ophthalmology residency.

4-0 out of 5 stars great intro for medical students
An excellent reference book and a great primer on optho basics for a medical student or intern

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have to Medicine/Family residents
This book is a very simple step-by-step walk through of the most common ophthalmic conditions. It is just over 100 pages, so it is very high yield while offering solutions for common conditions seen my family practice and internal medicine. It clearly outlines treatments and when to refer to ophthalmology.

It is also a great book for students who want to gain a better understanding of ophthalmology and excel on their rotation.

Your local ophthalmologist will thank you for the triage of hordeums and chalazions and your pts will be happy for being spared unnecessary consults

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional book for ophthalmology rotations
I used this book during ophthalmology rotations - it was recommended by attendings - and found it to be extremely useful and enjoyable (maybe that's why I ended up going into ophthalmology!).Contrary to a prior review, I actually think it's also a very useful book for medical students who contemplate going into ophthalmology.I actually recommend it to all my med student friends wanting to go into ophtho.A lot of the other books might be good resources as references, but for a busy med student who has to juggle clinics at the same time, this book was succinct, clear, very well diagrammed, engaging, and well-illustrated.It was manageable enough that you feel you can actually read the whole book (or close to it) and high-yield enough to come away with a good overall knowledge of ophthalmology. It emphasizes the key points at the end of each section, and I also liked the review questions given at the end of each section. You'll need other books as an ophtho resident, but this books certainly helped me on my ophtho rotations as a med student.I bought this book after I pretty much decided I wanted to go into ophtho, but if I had specialized in something else, it would have been an invaluable resource anyway.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for the purpose for which it was created
This book is good for medical students NOT interested in going into ophthalmology or for primary care residents interested in the basics of what they need to know for eye health screening. This is not a good book for the medical student who wants to go into ophthalmology.
Explains exam, common presentations and the appropriate workup and treatment.Good color pictures.Focuses heavily on what can be treated by the primary care physician versus what should be referred to an ophthalmologist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uselful for any non-ophthalmologist physician
This is a great text for any physician, PA or NP that works in a non-ophthalmology field. It's comprehensive and mastering the material contained within the text definitely sharpens clinical skills. Ophthalmology is a subject that doesn't receive much attention in medical school. This is a great supplement for clinicians wanting to broaden knowledge of eye disease and treatment. It clearly defines the problems that can be managed in a primary care or non-ophthalmology specialty. It also points out many common mistakes made in treating diseases of the eye, in effort to help the reader avoid such pitfalls.

It's concise, very easy to read and serves as a fantastic reference. My clinical skills were much improved after working through this text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a wonderful book
Structured and formatted very well, with some of the best and most accurate photos I've seen in a text, Kanski has delivered again. Everyone I know who owned a copy of the previous edition took one look at this one and bought it, which says a lot about how fantastic this edition is.

Buy it early in your career, read it, love it. Kanski is just the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This book is a wonderful reference, I use it in my office almost daily. A must have for any Optometrist or Optician.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, depending on what you're looking for.....
I purchased this book as somewhat of a comprehensive reference.I wanted something that would give useful in-depth theoretical detail about common eye conditions seen while in school; diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, common anterior segment disease processes, etc. While it does provide some of this information, it provides only cursory glances at many important topics.I found that it never reached any significant level of detail on anything and in some areas, just reads like a slightly expanded Wills without the treatment. There are quite a few photographs so it makes for a "pretty" book, but even many of the photos are not really all that impressive. If you're an OD/MD student looking for something to get a lot of detailed info in one place, I don't think this will be too much help. Vitreoretinal Disease (Carl Regillo)and/or Primary Care of the Posterior Seg (Alexander) are good sources for post seg pathology.Primary Care of the Anterior Seg (Catania) is great for anterior seg pathology. Those three together actually accomplished what I was looking for at the time.If you're looking for a nice photo book with some helpful info here and there, this might be just fine for you, though. For the price of a new copy, though, I think you could do much better with used copies of the texts I listed above.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best
This review book is a great, rapid fire question book with answers, similar to the Recall series most of us remember in medical school. So high yield I'm certain I bumped up my OKAP and Board scores by at least a few points. Some of the questions are out of date but so are the boards. Best section is the rapid fire optics questions. No pictures but that makes this book easier to review quickly, use it with the basic science books or friedman's open for pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars an ophthalmology fast review
This book permits a fast and precise review covering all the issues of
    ophthalmology.
A clear and concise question and answer for subspecialities is the clue for buying this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent OKAP high yield review
I've spent some time looking for a high yield review for the BCSC series, this book is it...it has a lot of high yield points the chief resident has been reviewing with us.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review book, ideal for last -minute cramming as the authors suggest
Thousands of straightforward questions followed by a concise answer. When reading this book you very quickly highlight your weaknesses and are prompted to go back to the text and review.I think that this book is most beneficial for knowing your stuff when getting pimped by attendings and fellows who tend to ask pointed questions during surgery or in clinic. This book has every question that they have ever thought to ask and many more.I would like to see some photos in this book with the same type of pointed questions since Ophthalmolgy is so dependant on clinical appearance for diagnosis and treatment. There is no dedicated pathology section, but all other topics including optics and pharmacology are tested. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!
Enough said...well almost! This is the best neuro-ophth review book out there. My neuro score on the OKAPS sky rocketed after I read this book. The BCS book stinks, but this book rocks. So easy to follow and review you will wonder why you ever wasted your time with any other book. The book is organized into very high yield bullet points that really pinpoint exactly what you need to know and none of the filler that you don't care about. Diagrams are easy to follow. No real pictures is the drawback, so will need an atlas or the like for pics. The section on visual fields was amazing! If neuro is your weak point (it was mine) or a strength, this book will help you regardless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Succinct and factual
If you want a short book that is understandable, brief and delivers the clinical goods with lots of illustrations this is a good bet.

4-0 out of 5 stars good one !
you need this one. loaded with info, small, current and high yield. the price makes the value exceptional. it does fall short on the explanation side, so it is not a reference text in any way but it is a great review manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic book
Excellent review source for neuro-ophthalmology.Hits highlights of important topics, much more concise than the ophthalmology basic science series neuro-ophthalmology book or other texts such as Glaser, walsh & hoyt etc. A must to use for studying for the ophthalmology boards. There are even some surgical diagrams such as the basic steps in performing optic nerve sheath decompression.

And in response to the previous review, Dr. Kline is an ophthalmologist, and the book is geared more toward ophthalmologists than neurologists, although it is certainly beneficial for both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant summary
This book is a brilliant summary of neuro-ophthalmology which is a perfect guide to writing clear essays in exams and useful for sorting out diagnostic issues in the clinic. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

    Product Description

The authors' constant interactions with medical students in the classroom, on the hospital ward, and in oral examinations ever since this pocket atlas first appeared in English 2001 have enabled them to update both the text and the illustrations for this new English edition.Like its predecessor, the 2nd edition provides a concise, thorough and up-to-date introduction to the field of ophthalmology.

Medical students on ophthalmology rotations, as well as beginning residents, will find it an invaluable companion on the ward and a useful aid for test preparation.Fully trained physicians and other health professionals, too, will be able to use it for a self-taught refresher course in ophthalmology.

The special features of this book include:

    - More than 500 clear, well-drawn illustrations and color photographs illustrating clinical findings, disease pathophysiology, and more

    - Many new illustrations since the previous edition reflecting the latest developments in the field, particularly in the chapters on the retina and the cornea

    - A new appendix containing correlations between clinical findings and the latest examining techniques, as well as a guide to visual field defects

    - Comprehensive presentation of examining techniques

    - An expanded glossary and a copiously illustrated table of important anatomical structures

    - A convenient and comprehensive table of cardinal manifestations of disease with associated findings, probable diagnoses, and suggestions for diagnostic work-up

    - Clearly and consistently organized chapters on all major diseases

Just as in the 1st edition, the individual chapters are organized to maximize their usefulness as a teaching tool:

    - Each chapter begins with the relevant basic concepts in anatomy and physiology

    - All diseases are consistently presented in accordance with clinical logic: first the symptoms, then the examination findings, then the diagnosis

    - The diseases are both described in words and shown in didactically useful illustrations

Understand the entire field of ophthalmology with this compact, beautifully illustrated text!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good atlas. Not quite a comprehensive textbook though.
I like the spalton atlas a lot. The pictures are of good quality but there are a number of complaints I have. First is the size. It is very tall and unwieldy. Taller than the Yanoff book although not as wide. The text is somewhat unpredictable with significant detail on some topics but quite cursory coverage of others. I do like how the atlas specifically refers and often points out findings in the photographs. The other thing that bothers me is the atlas has no specific pediatrics section. The competition is the Wills atlas, Kanski text and Kanski atlas, Mass eye and ear atlas, Yanoff text. Overall, I would say this book offers an excellent resource for good pictures with some supplementary text. If looking for only pictures, consider "clinical diagnosis in ophthalmology" by kanski. If looking for more of a textbook, consider the other yanoff book or other kanski book. If looking for a pocket atlas, consider the mass eye and ear text. If looking for a thinner more portable atlas, albeit less comprehensive, consider the wills atlas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent atlas
As a first year ophthalmology resident, I wanted an atlas to supplement the topics presented in the BCS series. The text in BCS is quite thorough but the pictures may as well have been taken from space they way they show detail. So far, I have been very impressed with the Spalton atlas. They have tons of large, high quality pictures, but as other reviewers have stated, the biggest benefit is the cartoon drawings next to each picture with arrows and labels to point out the important features (Contrast to BCS -- they give you a picture of the entire fundus of a diabetic patient for "IRMA" and let you guess where it is).The only downsides of this book as far as I'm concerned are as mentioned by others: 1) the binding is definitely not sturdy enough for the size of the book, 2) the CD-ROM is not well organized for looking up images (i.e. the descriptions are often not correctly tied to the search engine), and 3) the price (although not much different from a lot of other similar books).Otherwise, I would give it 5/5.Still highly recommend this to any ophthalmology resident looking for a good picture atlas.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent textbook
The review of anatomy before each chapter and the depth and variety of conditions is excellent! Our systemic disease and their ocular manifestations professor here at UC Berkeley School of Optometry has been teaching from this text because we can learn so much from the pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding atlas in a cheap binding
As with many Elsevier books, Spalton's is high quality context - and Spalton's is outstanding - but the book is bound in flimsy paper. Our copy arrived with the spine partially ripped at the joint; just resting this hefty volume on end ripped the front bottom corner of the cover. Looks great, but constructing a hardbound book with flimsy paper is a travesty.

3-0 out of 5 stars Would have been 5 stars if it had been edited well and on non-glossy paper
Great book, but I actually like the earlier edition better.I have the latest edition, but was disappointed with the many errors in the book and on the CD that accompanies the book. The Index has numerous errors as topics are not listed on the pages stated in the index. The CD also has numerous errors as the pictures dont coincide with the chapters in the book even though they are supposed to.

And finally the photos are printed on glossy paper making the details of the photos hard to see under reading light. The older edition used non glossy paper which made the pictures much easier to see.If they fix these two problems (indexing error and paper quality) then this book will receive a 5 rating from me. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good choice, but some flaws
I'm a second-year resident in ophthalmology. I wanted to get this book since it's been around for some 10 years now and it has good references. And the truth is, it is a nice one, full of clinical images and tables, streamlined format, color-coded for convenience, up-to-date with some of the newest therapies and backed up on the newest research, well explained surgical procedures, easy to read to the point that it covers only the most relevant information, and great for the busy life and often limited study time of the resident; I definetily use it as a starting point for reviewing any given topic, but please note, ONLY as a starting point, since it is not as thorough as one might need, and this is especially true for oculoplastics. The bottom line is that I recommend this book for fast and accurate gathering of general information, previos to a more detailed review on more robust texts, or to efficiently reinforce essentials on previuosly acquired knowledge. Hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, get it for Optometry!
This is an excellent review of most ocular diseases. It is NOT too much for Optometry. Those kind of reviews are what allows other health care professionals to belittle our profession. We must know and treat all ocular diseases as Optometric physicians and this book provides great information and pictures.Of course, more pictures are always better and Yanoff and Duker have only chosen to display pictures of typical presentations of conditions. However, this book provides a good basis of important information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't get it for Optometry
This book is way too much.We were required to get it for Disease class and I regret it!This book has entirely too much information and goes into too much detail. It's very hard to carry around anywhere or even to use in the office. They should have put it in 2 volumes and had it divided into surgery and disease processes or something.Bottom line, too much information for most people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
As an ophthlamology resident, I find that this is the most comprehensive textbook available in the field. While in my first year I was satisfied using the BSCS and Kanski as my primary references, I now find that I am turning more frequently to Yanoff and Duker as my primary source of information for grand rounds, OKAP studying, and Board review. While the text is large, it is highly accurate and full of high quality illustrations and figures. This translates to less time spent cross-referencing information, and more time absorbing the well-written text and learning the information. This text is an essential volume.

4-0 out of 5 stars I like this book, but tend to use another more often.
I'm one who likes medical texts, and I actually try to read most of what I buy. This is a excellent text.I think the organization is good, but that there is definitely room for improvement. The pictures are good, and the text is excellent, but could be slightly more concise. For these reasons, in addition to the very large size of the book, whenever there is something I need to look up, I generally reach for the Kanski textbook first as I find the pictures are just as good, the text slightly more concise but just as informative, and it is definitely easier on my back.I would recommend this book, but would look at Kanski too before you make your decision. ...
