The History of the CCSD
"Education in the Neon Shadow: The First 50 Years of the Clark County School District" is a history of what is currently the nation's fifth largest school district. Clark County occupies the southern triangle of Nevada, a geographically large area that borders Arizona, Utah and California. 'The Early History' section explores the initial settlements and their schools. Beginning with the Mormon colonies of the Colorado River, the book also examines the desert communities of Indian Springs, Blue Diamond and Searchlight. In addition to the mining and religious settlements, "Education in the Neon Shadow" naturally leads into the earliest days of the industrial towns of Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas and of course Las Vegas. This initial chapter will be of special interest to readers with an affection for Western history. In 1955, the scattered schools consolidated into the Clark County School District (CCSD). 'Striving for Equality 1965-1974' offers an interesting case study of how public schools strived to become racially integrated. For the CCSD, sixth grade centers were key. This time period also saw the introduction of school lunches and special education. 'Budget Struggles 1975-1984' examines a recurring theme with the CCSD. While desiring good schools, Southern Nevadans have a history of being reluctant to fund a quality education system. The 1980s brought a time of explosive growth. The PEPCON explosion and MGM Grand fire inspired safer schools. The history finishes with the challenges related to the federally mandated 'No Child Left Behind.' The book is threaded with the implementation of various programs, school openings and the accomplishments of superintendents. The authors carefully anchor each time period of the CCSD with local, national and global events. There are times when "Education in the Neon Shadow" seems like an annotated listing of government programs, but more often than not, it offers a humanizing overview of educators doing the best with what they have been given. Noticeably absent is the role that organized labor played in improving the CCSD. Stephens Press delivered a very attractive layout. Thanks to the efforts of the Archive Committee, the publication is lusciously illustrated with historical photographs. The black and white photos of the early days are especially precious. The contributing authors crafted a book that is as well-written as it is accessible. No history degree is required; this publication can be appreciated by the lay reader. "Education in the Neon Shadow" is long overdue. This book's predecessor (Harvey Dondero's "History of Clark County Schools") only spanned up to 1986 and it has long been out-of-print. Indeed, few could have predicted that a turn of the century railroad stop would eventually grow to the current metropolis that hosts some 300,000 students.
