Excerpt: The Sand Hills is a region of mixed-grass prairie on grass-stabilized sand dunes in north-central Nebraska, covering just over one quarter of the state. The region is variously defined by different organizations, so its size is indicated as 19,600 mi² (50,760 km²) or 23,600 mi² (61,100 km²). Sand Hills from space, September 2001 Sand Hills near Burwell, June 2009Dunes in the Sand Hills may exceed 330 ft (100 m) in height. The average elevation of the Sand Hills region gradually increases from about 1,800 ft (550 m) in the east to about 3,600 ft (1,100 m) in the west. The Sand Hills sit atop the massive Ogallala Aquifer; thus both temporary and permanent shallow lakes are common in low-lying valleys between the grass-stabilized dunes prevalent in the Sand Hills. The eastern and central sections of the region are drained by tributaries of the Loup River and the Niobrara River, while the western section is largely composed of small interior drainage basins. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) designated the Sand Hills as an ecoregion, distinct from other grasslands of the Great Plains. According to their assessment, as much as 85% of the Sand Hills ecoregion is intact natural habitat, the highest level in the Great Plains. This is chiefly due to the lack of crop production: most of the Sand Hills land has never been plowed. The plant-anchored dunes of the Sand Hills were long considered an irreclaimable desert. In the 1870s, cattlemen began to discover their potential as rangeland for longhorn cattle. The fragility of the sandy soil makes the area unsuitable for cultivation of crops. Unsuccessful attempts at farming were made in...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1449946 ... Read more

Chapters: Trails in Omaha. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 46. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Trails in Omaha, Nebraska include 80 miles (130 km) of paved trails as well as unpaved trails and paths for recreational usage throughout the city. Popular among bicyclists, runners, hikers and recreational walkers, these trails are included in comprehensive plans for the city of Omaha, the Omaha metro area, Douglas County, and long-distance coordinated plans between the municipalities of southeast Nebraska. The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge connects the trails of NE and IA.In 1887 the Omaha Bicycling Club was responsible for expanding Athletic Park at North 20th and Lake Streets to include a bicycle racing track, and there were other early trails throughout the city. However, Omaha was completely devoid of trails for several years during the 20th century leading up to early 1989. That year the city began developing the Keystone trail, and since then the city of Omaha has developed approximately 67 miles (108 km) of paved recreational trails, and another 35 miles (56 km) of trails are scheduled for completion within the next eight years. On September 28, 2008 the trails in Omaha were connected to trails in Council Bluffs, Iowa by way of the new Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. A 15- to 20-foot (6.1 m) wide "S"-shaped bridge spans more than 3,000 ft (910 m) across the Missouri River, connecting Omaha's Riverfront Trail with Playland Park in Council Bluffs. A recent study focused on the benefits of Omaha's trails found that respondents generally perceive the trails to be economic benefits, with almost two-thirds of those surveyed reporting the trails would increase the selling price of their home. There is no widespread concern for safety issues on the trails, as trespassing, theft and vand...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=13357711 ... Read more

Excerpt: An extensive network of trails in Lincoln, Nebraska are available for recreation there. The Antelope Valley Project provides a hub for the system. Project trails parallel the new Antelope Valley Parkway and provide connections to other trails. Capitol Parkway and its trail network connect to the Antelope Valley Project at J Street. Other trails utilize abandoned railroad rights of way. Some trails have been specially constructed. Still others, run through Wilderness Parkmiles of more primitive recreational trials exist there. At the Haymarket the Homestead Trail heads 72 miles (116 km) south to Marysville, KS. This extensive transportation, flood control and park complex, is the new hub of Lincoln's trails. A trail lines the Antelope Creek flood control channel from Military Road on the north to an extension connection of the Billy Wolff Trail on the South. The Parkway trails and connections to other trails, are made possible by a series of underpasses and bridges. The MoPac Trail intersects the Antelope Valley Project trail between W and Y Streets. The Jamaica North Trail is another of several convenient trails connected through the project. Virtually surrounding Holmes Lake, the trail connects with the Billy Wolff Trail south. The resulting trail complex, runs Northeast to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, City Campus. The trail runs from Holmes Lake, along Antelope Creek and Capitol Parkway, to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. In 2010, the intersection of South Street and Capitol Parkway will be ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19092265 ... Read more
