In fact the whole field of nuclear science has been relatively free of the glass-ceiling syndrome. An example is Marie Curie, who in 1903 became the first woman to be awarded the Nobel prize in science and in many ways opened up the trail for other women to follow careers in science. One of these is Tatiana Karma, a woman who holds what is perhaps one of the more unusual positions even within the diverse world of science. Tatiana (or Tanya, as she prefers to be called) Karma is a senior engineer of nuclear technology at ANSTO. As a Duty Operations Engineer, she is one of the few women actively involved in operating the nuclear research reactor on site. She is among a highly elite group of women around the world who have earned this responsibility. However, most of her time these days is dedicated to running the silicon irradiation business. Silicon irradiation is a profitable business for ANSTO, generating some $3 million revenue each year, with customers that include some of the world’s major electronics companies. ANSTO for its part irradiates (or "dopes", as it’s known) a significant proportion of the silicon used in electronics around the world. Karma takes on this crucial responsibility with an air of ease and professionalism.

I have worked at operating nuclear power plants for the last 15+ years. The nuclear engineers that stated "it takes four months to allow a core to cool, and this takes electrical power", is true. However, they must have never worked at a operating nuclear power plant. Every nuclear power plant in the U.S. has a diesel generator as a backup power supply. There is a 2000 gallon diesel fuel tank for each unit. This gives them 7 days of power without replenishment from tanker trucks. There is a rumored contingency plan to have 2 full tanker trucks in the parking lot on standby in case there is a mechanical problem during the offloading of the spent fuel. It only takes 6 days to "offload", defuel the reactor and place the spent fuel bundles into the spent fuel building(SFB). The SFB is a separate building that contains the spent fuel from previous fuel cycles of operation. This pool is at atmospheric pressure. It looks like a large swimming pool. The spent fuel pool is cooled using a heat exchanger and pump which requires minimal electrical power. If you are truly wanting to inform the public, you should update your article with this accurate information.

This engineer must properly balance the requirements of reactor safety, the release of work involving reactor plant components or systems and the testing subsequent to work completion. Additionally, Shift Test Engineers from this division determine and supervise all testing performed on the reactor plant. The Chief Test Engineer is in overall charge of the reactor plant test program and reactor safety. FLUID SYSTEMS AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DIVISION This division is the backbone of mechanical engineering performed by the department. Its responsibilities include all technical matters related to reactor plant fluid, auxiliary, and steam generating systems. Engineers in this division are responsible for mechanical components including valves, pumps, piping, heat exchangers, steam generating equipment, pressure vessels and the foundations of submarine reactor plant components.

U.S. Naval Officer LTJG Dennis Evangelista , a nuclear engineer with the Advanced Submarines Division at Naval Reactors Headquarters, is developing advanced propulsion concepts and integrating nuclear propulsion systems with the submarines other systems for future designs. Evangelista is working to replace steam systems with electrical systems in the next generation of nuclear powered submarines. He also uses his skills to keep the countrys only nuclear-powered, deep-diving research submarine in top operating condition.
