    Extractions: HISTORY of the LEAGUE The fall of 1967 was the beginning of junior hockey here in Nova Scotia. The league was named the Metro Valley Jr. B Hockey League. Teams from the valley and metro area competed in this inaugural league. The first teams were the Windsor Jr. B Royals, the Berwick Bruins, the Dartmouth Arrows, the Halifax Lions, the Truro Bearcats, the East Hants Penguins and the Amherst Ramblers. A year or two went by and the Chester Ravens, the New Glasgow Bombers and the Pictou Iceman joined the league. At that time to win the Provincial Jr. B title, the Metro Valley Jr. B League had to play the winner of the Cape Breton Jr. B League. By the 1989-1990 season the Jr. B league had dropped back down to only five teams. A recent addition to the league, the St. Margaret's Bay Mariners decided to leave the league the next season reducing the number of teams to four. Jr. B hockey in Nova Scotia was in rough times. The league administration undertook some changes when the league statistician (Mr. Beckwith of Truro) and the League President resigned. Allan Fraser was appointed to the post of Statistician and Dave Campbell assumed the post of League President (prior owner of the St. Margaret's Bay Mariners). At that point the league had a mandate set to expand the league to ten teams by the year 1995.

Yet Dartmouth's history is separate, distinct and often fascinating. In many ways the history of Dartmouth is synonymous with its industrial heritage. Economic fortunes fluctuated with the boom and bust periods brought on by war. Before the arrival of the French or the British, the Mi'kmaq considered the Dartmouth side of the harbour more hospitable than the Halifax side. They referred to Dartmouth as the place of "abundant fir and spruce". Shellfish were available at low tide, as well as crab, salmon, trout and haddock. There was no lack of game as the surrounding wooded areas were full of moose, deer and partridge. The Shubenacadie canoe route, a system of rivers and lakes that stretched past what became Truro to Minas Basin, had long been in use by the natives as a reliable route for trade and travel.     Extractions: Nova Scotia showed its muscle in boxing and weightlifting in 1975. Our boxers claimed a gold, two silver and a bronze, while our weightlifters won a gold and a silver medal. Hockey won a sliver, and wrestling and judo each won a bronze. Nova Scotia landed a sixth place overall finish and 146 flag points to win the Centennial Cup for the first time. 1979 Brandon Nova Scotia maintained its sixth place overall standing. Our boxing and weightlifting teams came through again with boxers capturing two gold, two silver and two bronze and weightlifting claiming one gold, two sliver and two bronze medals. Silver medals were also won in judo, women's curling and hockey while fencing and gymnastics gained bronze. Team Nova Scotia gave an outstanding performance with a total of 17 medals. 1983 Saguenay-Lac St-Jean Nova Scotia's judo squad stole the show with five medals-one gold, one silver and three bronze. Our boxers won four bronze medals while weightlifters took home one gold, one silver and two bronze. We captured our first medals in racquetball with a silver and a bronze and women's curling nabbed a second consecutive silver.

    Extractions: Co-Authored with Janet Gordon If you were shown three 19th century quilts made in the eastern U.S., another Wales, the last Nova Scotia, you'd find it difficult to determine which came from where. Nova Scotia, Canada, is at the furthest edge of North America. It lies between Britain and the United States, as a peninsula jutting out from New Brunswick. Surrounded by water, ships from far and near made their way bringing people, fabrics, and other goods to the settlers there. According to the book, the earliest inhabitants were the Mi'kmaq . The French established the first permanent European settlement in 1605, but Norse explorers and Basque fishermen had been there long before from across the Atlantic. At that time the region was loosely comprised of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and called Acadia. In 1713 the British fought the French for Acadia and won. In 1749 they built a large seaport in Halifax for their main defense against the French, who had taken back their fortress in Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island under the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. But the British got it back and secured all of Nova Scotia by 1758. It remained in their hands from then on. They proceeded to encourage and arrange for Swiss and German immigrants to settle in Halifax, the capitol, and subsequently in Lunenburg, further south on the Atlantic coast. The Scots came later, in 1773, to settle in Cape Breton and Pictou County.

    Extractions: During the American Revolution, Joseph Sr. was captured by an American privateer while on his way back to Liverpool from a peaceful voyage from the West Indies. With ship and cargo confiscated, he was imprisoned, escaping after nearly a year. He came home penniless. After hard work, he restored his position, and by 1789 he built what was then one of the largest homes in Liverpool. That house now forms part of the Lane's establishment. The site was known as Dean's Point. The house faced the Mersey River. There were twelve large rooms, each with a fireplace, and the kitchen had an ell with a large fireplace and brick ovens. At that time, there was no bridge to cross the Mersey River, so a ferry boat crossed from the foot of present-day Market Street to Dean's Point.

The first GSAR teams originated in Cape Breton in the 1960's and eventually spread throughout Nova Scotia. The tragic loss of a child and a volunteer ground searcher in 1969 created a real awareness of the need for a formally mandated ground search and rescue program. The Emergency Measures Organization of Nova Scotia EMO (N.S.), took the initiative and created the first GSAR Program, complete with financial and workers' compensation support for volunteer GSAR participants. The provincial organization was formed in 1990 with the inaugural meeting of the NSGSARA being held in Schubenacadie. In October 1994, the program was further strengthened by the signing of a formal Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) between the RCMP (Nova Scotia, 'H' Division), EMO (N.S.) and the NSGSARA. These three organizations, co-operating through the sharing of resources and volunteers have developed an efficient, effective and comprehensive GSAR Program. In addition, GSAR Program participants have delivered a preventive ground search and rescue program to more than 50,000 young Nova Scotians. Current research and development activities are continuing to find new ways to ensure the successful rescue of those whose lives are in danger.
