Horrified that the children were to be separated and placed in various foster homes, Jack and Inge vowed to provide a service to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. From 1993 to 2001 Wendy Chappell acted as Village Director, working tirelessly to improve the services the Village provided. SOS Children’s Village Nova Scotia is a member of one of the world’s largest charitable organizations dedicated to helping children - SOS-Kinderdorf International. SOS-Kinderdorf International recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, which culminated with a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. More than 50 children have found homes in the Village since it first opened.

    Extractions: for Nova Scotia Building Pride In African Heritage The Society for the Protection and Preservation of Black Culture in Nova Scotia (better know as the Black Cultural Society) was incorporated as a charitable organization in 1977. The Society consists of 26 Board of Directors, representing various black communities in Nova Scotia and one representative of African United Baptist Association. The genesis of the Black Cultural Centre lay in a proposal put forward in 1972 by Reverend Dr. William Pearly Oliver for the creation of a Cultural Educational Centre to meet the needs and aspirations of the Black Communities of Nova Scotia. The sod turning ceremony took place on April 24, 1982, seventeen months later the Centre was officially opened on September 17, 1983. Many events have taken place at the Centre, such as cultural portrayals in the form of music, plays, concerts, as well as educational activities in the form of workshops, lectures and guided tours. Programs of the Black Cultural Centre extend beyond it doors to the broader community of Nova Scotia. This outreach is achieved through cultural events across Nova Scotia. Funding/Fund-Raising The Society gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Federal Department of Canadian Heritage and the Provincial Department of Education and Culture. The Society is also funded through Foundations, and Donations from individuals, organizations, the Corporate and Private Sectors. On going Fund-raising is constant.

The first visitors were Norsemen in the early 11th century, and, in 1497, Italian sea captain John Cabot noted the rich fishing grounds in the area. In the 17th century, all of Nova Scotia, as well as parts of Quebec, New Brunswick and Maine were settled by the French. Pierre de Monts established the first successful agricultural settlement in Canada, at Port Royal in 1605. In the next century, the British and the French feuded over the area. Control of the area passed back and forth until 1713, when all of Acadia was ceded to the British under the Treaty of Utrecht. Worldwide conflict between Britain and France continued. The Acadians, settlers from France, tried to convince both sides of their neutrality, but by 1755 the British had decided that the Acadians posed too great a security threat. They expelled all Acadians who would not swear allegiance to the British Crown. Farms were torched, and the population was expelled. Some escaped, most were deported. Some of the exiles returned to France, some settled in New France. Those deported to the Louisiana Territories in what is today the United States, are now known as "Cajuns."

"They told us they weren't registering any more organizations that start with "Nova Scotia"," recalls founding chairman David Dibblee, "So we thought what if we turned it around and ended it with Nova Scotia. They clapped their hands and said that's fine." It was a heady time in the Nova Scotia industry. The semi-submersible drilling rig John Shaw-a visible symbol of the infant industry- was docked and being serviced in Halifax Harbour. In March of the year, the province and Ottawa reached a deal on shared jurisdiction. As part of the accord, then-federal energy minister Jean Chretien announced $2.5 billion in tax breaks and grants to kick-start development. Major producers such as Shell Canada, Mobil Oil and Petro-Canada had begun to hand out a raft of local contracts. Dibblee, president of Leefax Services Ltd., a marine consultancy, was one of about 30 Nova Scotia businessmen who traveled to Aberdeen, Scotland in August 1982 to get a first-hand sense of North Sea oil and gas activities and the potential opportunities for local industry. He vividly recalls the buoyant mood of the group many years later: "Our reaction was, 'wow'".

    Extractions: The establishment of the Nova Scotian Institute of Natural Science in 1862 marked the beginnings of professional archaeology in the province. The Institute held bimonthly meetings, organized field trips and published member's papers in the Proceedings and Transactions . It provided the organization for persons with archaeological interests and was in large part responsible for the archaeological fluorescence of the following five decades. The first articles published by the Institute reflect a problem-oriented approach to the excavation and description of archaeological sites in which site locations were sought, excavated and commented upon in relation to a specific scientific theory. Two of these early articles were "On the Occurrence of the Kjoekkenmoedding, on the Shores of Nova Scotia", which reports on the shell middens of St. Margarets Bay and Cole Harbour, and another account of a shell midden in an 1863 article by Reverend James Ambrose - "Some Accounts of the Petrel - the Sea Serpent - and the Albicore - as Observed at St. Margarets Bay - Together with a Few Observations on a Beach Mound, or Kitchen Midden, near French Village." These early articles display a good knowledge of the archaeological techniques of the day and illustrate that a healthy exchange of information with institutions such as the Smithsonian was occurring. The next series of articles published by the Nova Scotian Institute of Science showed a decline in archaeological research with the focus shifting to purely descriptive accounts that contributed little to an understanding of the prehistoric period.     Extractions: New England, New France and New Spain were already established on this side of the Great Atlantic Roar" when New Scotland was founded by Sir William Alexander , and King James of Scotland in the early 1600s. At that time, New Scotland consisted approximately of the Atlantic Provinces as we know them today, and the Gaspe Peninsula. Sir William Alexander with King James devised a settlement scheme of granting the title "Baronet of Nova Scotia" to any who would purchase large grants of land in New Scotland (Nova Scotia), secure and settle those lands. These Baronets of Nova Scotia received their lands in New Scotland (Nova Scotia) during the ancient ceremony of "Earth and Stone" while standing on a plot of land deemed by imaginative legalese to be part of New Scotland (Nova Scotia). William Alexander, son of Sir William Alexander, brought out settlers to Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, in the late 1620s and established Charles Fort there. When the colony again went back to the French, about three years after their arrival, these Scottish emigrants were required to return to Scotland. See Founding of New Scotland (Nova Scotia) More than a century later, when the French and the English had finished their "tug of war" in claiming Nova Scotia from each other, and the English finally kept it, Scottish emigrants again began to come here. They settled in all parts of Nova Scotia. When the 1871 census was taken, the Scots made up the greater percentage of the population in Colchester, Inverness, Pictou and Victoria Counties. They also settled in large numbers in each of the other counties and became one of the leading groups in developing New Scotland (Nova Scotia).

    Extractions: 1890s - African Nova Scotians in Nova Scotia played hockey and formed teams. The games were segregated. 1900 - African Nova Scotians formed a league of their own called "The Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes"; quite likely the only "Colored" Hockey League in the World. There were teams at Halifax, Africville, Hammond's Plains, Dartmouth, Truro, Amherst and Charlottetown, P.E.I.. They played a good brand of hockey, drew large crowds to games and provided entertainment before games and between periods with races, chases, and acrobatics. Games were on an invitational basis and no trophy was used. They were first to allow the goal tender to drop to the ice to stop the puck - not allowed in NHL until 1917. Last games in this league appear to have been played in 1920.

    Extractions: Competition Next time you walk past the Paper Chase on Blowers Street in Halifax, stop for a moment. If you have your camera - take one of this building for the record. What you will be recording is the birthplace of the predecessor of the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia. In November 1947, on the second floor of this edifice, which was then the Camera Store of the Maritimes, owner Edward A. Bollinger convened a meeting of photographers with a view to formalizing a photo group. Present on that historic evening were: Russell E. Hefler , who was elected president, Peggy Wright and Cyril Smith, the first secretary and treasurer respectively. At their next meeting just a month later agreement was reached to call the organization, "The Color Photographic Guild of the Maritimes". They wasted little time. In the first month of the new year members held a studio night and, according to the record, arrived in costumes and theatrical makeup. Perhaps a celebration of their success, and an opportunity to photograph indoors safe from the January winds. Those photographic pioneers enjoyed celebrating and did it with class. Their first annual banquet was held in the Georgian Lounge of the Lord Nelson Hotel. That would be like having our annual banquet this year at one of the Sheraton's fancy ballrooms - maybe not a bad idea for the 50th anniversary.
