Extractions: Alan Syliboy Artist Statement In the beginning I found painting painful and difficult because I was unsure of my own identity. As my exploration of painting and my understanding of Mi'kmaq spiritualism expanded, my confidence and ability grew with it. Since my family is where I am centered, everything else is exterior. I feel that I have gained the inner strength to conceptualize my spiritualism. Simplicity of line and colour and uncomplicated symbolism now gives my work a cleanness and strength. From this point of beginning I incorporate new themes and mediums to insure my artistic progression. Elements of Mi'kmaq petroglyph records found throughout Nova Scotia provide some inspiration for the developing of my general theme, which is my expression of the pride and understanding attached to our cultural heritage. Most of my subjects deal with family, searching, struggle, and strength. All these things are part of my art, and my art gives me strength for my continuing spiritual quest.

Extractions: The Province of Nova Scotia through the Department of Tourism and Culture is working with its Gaelic community to advance a policy and development strategy for Gaelic lanaguage and culture. In the fall of 2002, a discussion paper entitled A' Leasachadh Polasaidh Agus Ro-Innleachd Do Ghàilhlig Na H-Albann Nuaidh / Developing a Gaelic Policy and Strategy in (Gaelic or English) was prepared for a public consultation process that included 10 meetings from Halifax to Sydney. More than 400 Nova Scotians took part in the consultation meetings. In addition, several dozen submissions were also received by mail as well as e-mail from Nova Scotia and throughout North America on Gaelic language and culture. Attached is a press release on the process as well as the full report from facilitator John Hugh Edwards. Currently, the Gaelic Steering Committee, made up of Gaelic activists, community workers, educators, government representatives and interested individuals, is meeting to take the information from the consultation process and formulating a vision and objectives for a strategy. Centre to all things in creation is the drum, in the same way as the heart provides life for the body. Generally all Native people, for centuries and centuries, have held on to the belief that the heart and the drum share the same purpose and responsibility, that is, providing life through its beat. This connection of the drum and the heart as the centre and the source of life promotes a "oneness" concept between man and nature. Seeing the world in this unique perception therefore cultivates a special bond, a very personal man/world relationship that manifests itself to giving Native people a sense of genuine love and respect for all living things of Nature. Smudging To do a Smudging ceremony, burn the clipping of these herbs (dried), rub your hands in the smoke and then gather the smoke and bring it into your body or rub it onto yourself especially onto any area you feel needs spiritual healing. Keep praying all the while that the unssen powers of the plant will cleanse your spirit. Sometimes one person will smudge another, or a group of people, using hands or more often a feather to lightly brush the smoke over the other people. The Elders say that all ceremonies, tribal or private must be entered into with a good heart, so that we can pray,sing and walk in a sacred manner and be helped by the spirit to enter the sacred realm.

The Scottish Gaelic language and music had been brought to North America centuries ago via the Scottish settlers and has been fostered and sustained to this day. It is difficult to discuss this ancient music without reference to language and the overall culture and lifestyle of the Gaelic people. Musicologists believe there exists a profound bond between language and music - and what other culture could be more strongly oral in its traditions than the Gaelic culture? One could easily conclude that it is very difficult to separate the Gaelic language from its music since both form a strand in the Celtic 'knot' or culture. Each one depends on the other. If the language did not possess such power, much of our instrumental music would have been lost over time. With such a vast storehouse of Scottish Gaelic music already preserved, the Gaelic 'flavor' of our music should last but the oral component of the culture will be all important for future non-Gaelic speaking musicians. The designation of the month of May as Gaelic Cultural Awareness Month should encourage us all to preserve and promote our Gaelic language, music and culture so that it may flourish for generations to come.
