Extractions: T he world was stunned in 1912 by the loss of the liner Titanic on her maiden voyage. Halifax, Nova Scotia , located on the eastern coast of Canada, has one of the most moving and intimate connections with the Titanic disaster, playing a key role during the tragedy's aftermath and becoming the final resting place of many of her unclaimed victims. T hree Halifax ships were involved in the grim task of recovering victims - many of whom were laid to rest in three of our city's cemeteries. Rows of black granite headstones, each inscribed with the same date, April 15, 1912, are a stark reminder of the disaster. Titanic artifacts at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic are a touching reminder of the ship's lost luxury, her violent end and the special role our port played as the enormity of the disaster unfolded. These artifacts were all pulled from the water within weeks of the sinking by ships from Halifax searching for Titanic victims. The exhibit features wooden artifacts collected at the scene of the disaster, including one of the only

The Act, which provides the Secretariat with legal status, recognizes that the diverse needs of Nova Scotians aged 15 to 24 are served by several provincial government departments. Extractions: The Bluenose Jugglers Although juggling and the circus arts do not have a long history in Nova Scotia, this seedling is definitely sprouting! The origins of our club are in a small group of jugglers, unicyclists, mimes and tightrope walkers who began to meet in 1982 under the auspices of Portable Mime Theatre . For the next several years jugglers continued to gather under the 'Juggle Jam' banner to teach each other new tricks and work together on routines. In time local performing groups like Fool's Paradise Jest in Time and Just Us grew from these gatherings. These days the club meets under the auspices of the YMCA and is know as the Bluenose Jugglers Over the years the club has played host to many prominent teacher's and performers including the internationally acclaimed clown Bob Berkey , circus teacher Hovey Burgess , mime Don Reider , author Richard Dingman and others. Many internationally famous performing jugglers have visited Halifax and have been hosted by the club. These include Sergei Ignatov Vycheslav Anokhin Victor Filipovitch Evgenii Biljauer ... Andrei Nikolaev , Gennadi Tregoub, and Valerii Tabenkov all of whom have been in Nova Scotia in different travelling companies of the Moscow Circus, Elena Lev who came with the Cirque du Soleil, and Li Li-ping, a marvellous antipodist who came as part of the

Extractions: WFNS Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia Alistair MacLeod was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, in 1936. He lived on the Prairies until the age of ten when his parents moved back to the family farm on Cape Breton. After obtaining his Teacher's Certificate from the Nova Scotia Teacher's College, Alistair took his B.A. and B.Ed. (1960) from St. Francis Xavier University, his M.A. (1961) from the University of New Brunswick, and his Ph.D. (1968) from the University of Notre Dame. He taught at Indiana University from 1966 until 1969, then moved to the University of Windsor, where he is currently Professor of English and Creative Writing. Alistair's short fiction roots itself in carefully delineated and haunting settings, only to transcend the settings in humane explorations of the personal struggles that challenge and often defeat men and women of all time. Alistair MacLeod resides in Windsor, Ontario.

Extractions: WFNS Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia Mary Alice Downie was born in Alton, Illinois (on Abraham Lincoln's birthday) of Canadian parents. They returned to Canada and she grew up in Toronto, graduating from U. of T. despite spending most of her time at 'The Varsity'. Afterwards, the usual range of jobs for an English grad - steno pool at MacLean-Hunter, editorial assistant for a medical journal, publicity manager for the Canadian branch of Oxford University Press. In 1959-she married John Downie; they moved to Pittsburg where she produced film, play and book reviews and two daughters, Christine and Jocelyn. In 1962 they came to Kingston where they have lived ever since, apart from three memorable sabbaticals in Cambridge. Alexandra, their centennial project, was born in 1967. The Wind Has Wings: Poems from Canada (with Barbara Robertson) Mary Alice's first book appeared in 1968. Now she writes and edits in the city and watches trees fall down in the woods on an island on the Rideau. These days she and her husband make frequent trips to Halifax to visit a daughter, son-in-law and Sam, aged three. Mary Alice has received grants from the Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council, Laidlaw Foundation, Explorations, Ontario Heritage Foundation and the Multicultural Directorate.

She spent ten years working as a field geologist across Canada as well as in Iceland, Scotland, and the Central Appalachians, and has worked as a geological museum exhibit interpreter. She now lives in Halifax with her three children. Susan turned to fiction writing in 1981.

Extractions: POMORZE POLISH FOLKDANCE ENSEMBLE Pomorze, Nova Scotia's Polish Folkdance Ensemble, was born in 1983. During the last several years the ensmeble has been "dormant" however, it has recently started up again and rehearsals are once again in progress. See the information below on how to get involved. During its past incarnation, Pomorze grew from a small group of enthusiasts to a well-organized company with a full repertoire. During that time Pomorze gave over one hundred fifty performances at occasions such as the Polish Dance Festival of the Americas in both Boston and Montreal, the Canadian Polish Dance Festival in Toronto, the Seventh and Eighth International Festival of Polish Folkdance Ensembles in Rzeszow, Poland, the Canada Games Festivities in Cape Breton, the visit of His Holiness Pope John-Paul II in Halifax, The Nova Scotia International Tattoo, the first annual 'A Day in Poland' celebrations, and many multicultural events and celebrations. Pomorze's performances in Poland earned them the Medal of Honour from amongst the fifty-five companies from eleven countries who participated. Pomorze also produced two half hour television programs for Halifax Cablevision entitled Zabawa - Poland Dances Pomorze's costume collection is one of the best of its kind in Canada with six complete colourful sets of eight men's and women's costumes for the dances in the repertoire. All the costumes are authentic folk costumes, for the most part made in their respective regions of Poland. The collection also includes smaller numbers of costumes from other regions. The original music to which the dances are performed was scored for eight instruments and recorded by local musicians.

Five thousand years before the first European arrivals. Cape Blomidon was home to the legendary Mi'kmaq god, Glooscap, and the Mi'kmaq people made their home here hunting, fishing, and traveling the waterways in and around Kings County. The French Acadians settled here in the early 1600's and started construction of an extensive dyke system. Until their deportation in 1755 by colonial troops from New England, the Acadians lived in this area for 120 years and built prosperous communities. The New England Planters settled lands left vacant by Acadians. and many of their descendants farm the lands still.

It teaches our young, comforts our old - and inspires all ages. Choral music is timeless. The Nova Scotia Choral Federation is making sure it has a future in our province. Founded in 1976 the Nova Scotia Choral Federation (NSCF) took its place as one of eight cultural federations, supported by the provincial government. We enjoy a good arms-length relationship with the Department of Tourism and Culture. The Federation is a charity registered as the Nova Scotia Choral Federation - 119063311 RP0001. The Federation is one of eight provincial choral federations. NSCF has proven itself to be a leader among its sister choral federations and has developed an excellent complement of programs and services. Our Junior Choir Camp, begun in 1979, was the model for similar camps in both Ontario and Saskatchewan. We are one of two provinces that have a provincial youth choir and the only province in Canada to provide Adult Choir Camp, a weeklong, non-auditioned, program.
