Extractions: School Uses End-of-Course Tests to Improve Vocational Instruction Teachers and administrators at Eastern Guilford High School in Gibsonville, N.C., are improving vocational studies by raising standards and expecting students to meet them. High expectations begin with course competencies developed by educators and industry representatives using national skill standards. End-of-course tests help teachers measure students progress and adjust teaching methods, course materials and course content. Test items based on the competencies are used to assess individual students. The test items are part of North Carolinas Vocational Competency Achievement Tracking System (VoCATS), which gives teachers the information and materials to plan, manage, evaluate and document student achievement. During the first 10 days of the school year, vocational students complete pre-tests generated by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction from the VoCATS items. Teachers scan the completed tests into Testmate, a CTB-McGraw Hill management program that produces a report showing each students initial mastery. By studying the data, teachers determine which competencies to reinforce in the coming year. Interim tests based on VoCATS are used to measure students progress and to modify instruction during the year. Students who master a competency move ahead, while others receive additional instruction and are re-tested. Mastery is considered to be 80 percent and above. The goal in North Carolina is for 80 percent of students to achieve 80 percent mastery.

Sixteen students were selected for enrollment in the North Carolina Governor's School, and two were selected to attend the North Carolina School of Science and Math. North Carolinas Scholars recipients, students recognized by the state for superior academic achievement, numbered 578.
