As they examine North Carolina, they learn about the characteristics of North Carolina people: who we are and where we came from. They explore our geographic regions, learning about the landforms, climate, and resources of the state. Fourth graders are introduced to the concept of culture and learn about the state's social, economic, and political institutions. As students learn about North Carolina, they begin to view the state in the broad context of other regions the southeast, the nation, and the world economy in which we live. As students learn about North Carolina they develop concepts and generalizations from history and the social sciences. These concepts and generalizations, developed in fourth grade, will be further refined in grades five through seven as students examine other world regions. Concepts for the study are drawn from history and the social sciences, but the primary discipline is geography, especially cultural geography. Extractions: Agencies In North Carolina Will Receive $3.9 Million To Feed, Shelter Homeless Atlanta, GA, January 8, 2002 -Victims of non-disaster emergencies in North Carolina will be able to receive help because of $3,974,230 from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) for fiscal year 2002. "This money will help people with non-disaster related economic emergencies so they will not become homeless or go hungry," said Kenneth O. Burris, Jr., regional director for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Region IV office in Atlanta. "The program is one of the best examples of a public/private partnership working to help people who truly need help." Each year the Emergency Food and Shelter Program National Board develops a formula for distributing the funds based on the national unemployment and poverty rates. The EFSP National Board is composed of representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, Council of Jewish Federations, The United Way, and The National Council of Churches. A representative from the Federal Emergency Management Agency chairs the National Board. A local board in each county or city jurisdiction receiving EFSP funds determines how they will be spent. This may include such things as providing food, in the form of served meals or groceries; lodging in a mass shelter or hotel; one month's rent or mortgage payment; one month's utility bill; or minimal repairs to allow a mass feeding or sheltering facility to function during the program year. Except for the chairmanship, the composition of the local board mirrors the National Board.

Residents of North Carolina will learn that dialing 2-1-1 can be just as easy. 2-1-1 is fast becoming known as the number to call for health and human service information and referral services and volunteer opportunities, where available, throughout North Carolina. Currently, the 2-1-1 three-digit abbreviated dialing code is available in four regions within North Carolina. A 2-1-1 Standing Committee created to work through the logistics of making 2-1-1 call services available in the state developed the application process including standards of operation, marketing and communications standards, and standards for data collection. Through this application process, all organizations wishing to provide 2-1-1 services within a specific geographical area or community must submit application to the United Way of North Carolina. The UWNC Board of Directors has sole authority over the disposition of each application. The Committee has been instrumental in bringing 2-1-1 services to four major regions in the state. At present, 2-1-1 Call Centers and services are available through the Triangle United Way to cover Wake, Durham, Orange and Chatham Counties; United Way of Central Carolinas to cover Mecklenburg, Union, and Cabarras Counties; United Way of Asheville to cover Buncombe County; and the Triad United Way Services, a partnership between the United Way of Greater Greensboro, the United Way of Greater High Point, and the United Way of Forsyth County to cover Guilford and Forsyth Counties with coverage including Randolph, Rockingham and Davie Counties.
