Findings are conveyed through a variety of illustrations, aerial and ground photographs, maps, and statistical tables. This book is addressed to business and professional leaders, schoolteachers, college students, public servants, and all North Carolinians. Three major sections in the text define the holistic nature of the state's contemporary geography: I. Physical environments - Chapters 1-3; II. Human environments - Chapters 4-7, with Chapter 8 providing the critical linkage between the two major environments by assessing how we humans are impacted by the natural environment, and how we in turn influence change in its essential character; and III. Regional environments - Chapters 9-13, where Chapter 9 establishes the need to move from a state level of analyzing conditions to the major regions, and finally to individual counties; the purpose being to bring a more detailed focus on the character and problems of nature and human existence. Discerning school teachers and students of the state's complex physical and social geography will be able to easily navigate the chapters for information on the Five Themes of Geography, as included in the K-12 requirements of the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction. They will find a progression of information sequentially focusing on the natural environment (three chapters), the human environment (five chapters), and the state's regional environments (five chapters). The authors have devised a hierarchical system of regions from the state level, to four primary state regions, thirteen state geographic regions, counties and municipalities, and finally, to communities and neighborhoods.

The Coastal Plain The low, flat land of North Carolina's eastern region stretches from the sandy farmland of the Inner Coastal Plain to the state's Outer Banks, a string of barrier islands separated from the mainland by sounds or inlets. The Outer Banks has three capes Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout, and Cape Fear. The Piedmont Piedmont is a French word meaning "foot of the mountain," and North Carolina's Piedmont region is sometimes referred to as "the foothills." The rolling hills of this region range in elevation from just 300 feet in the east to 1,500 feet near the mountains. The Piedmont is sometimes referred to as a plateau because it is high and mostly flat. The Mountains Western North Carolina's majestic landscape features the Blue Range Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains, which help make up the Appalachian Mountains, possibly the oldest mountain range in the United States. The region is also home to Mount Mitchell. Rising 6,684 feet above sea level, Mount Mitchell is the tallest peak east of the Mississippi River. The Eastern Continental Divide runs along the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains, separating the rivers flowing east from those flowing west. Rivers that fall on the eastern side of the divide flow toward the Atlantic Ocean while those on the western side of the divide flow toward the Tennessee and Ohio rivers and into the Gulf of Mexico.
