The Commission is a statutorily created body charged with certifying and regulating mediators who conduct mediated settlement conferences in North Carolina's superior and district courts. A mediated settlement conference is a facilitated discussion during which parties, with the aid of a neutral mediator , search for mutually agreeably solutions to their disputes. The mediator serves as afacilitator who works with the parties to open channels of communication, to inject reason into their discussions, and to help each side see the dispute through the eyes of the other. The mediator will also explore with each side the strengths and weaknesses of their case, suggest compromises, and carry offers and counter-offersbetween the parties. Unlike a judge or jury, mediators do not make decisions for the parties. Rather, mediators help parties come to their own conclusions and agreements on how to settle their disputes. The Commission supports two statewide mediation programs - the Mediated Settlement Conference (MSC) and the Family Financial Settlement (FFS) Programs . The MSC Program is designed to promote early settlement of cases filed in superior court including, automobile accident and other negligence cases andbusiness and contract disputes. The FFS Program operates in district court and provides opportunities for early settlement of equitable distribution, alimony, and child support cases. The Commission also supports the

Extractions: The University of North Carolina has completed an evaluation of a specific community-based primary prevention project addressing dating violence in a rural North Carolina county. In a project funded from 1993-1997, selected 8th and 9th grade students in Johnston County received classroom instruction about gender stereotypes, conflict management's skills, and social norms that contribute to dating violence. Classroom instruction was supplemented with student-conducted dramatic performances. In addition, parents, police workers, and other key individuals in the community were trained to be better resources for youths who seek assistance about teenage dating violence. This project has been awarded an additional three years of funding to conduct longitudinal follow-up evaluation with students to determine the magnitude of continuing program effectiveness. Four five-year projects were funded in fiscal year 1994. The four projects will (a) identify successful methods for delivering family and intimate partner violence interventions at the community level, and (b) to determine the extent to which multifaceted, community-based programs can reduce rates of violent behavior, injury, and death associated with family and intimate partner violence. All of these projects have an evaluation component. City of Houston Department of Health and Human Services; Minnesota Program Development, Inc.; Milwaukee Women's Center, Inc.; and Men Stopping Violence, Inc., in Georgia received funding.
