    Extractions: Encyclopedia Newfoundland, province, Canada In the early 19th cent. the Hudson's Bay Company developed the fur trade, and this, together with the expansion of the fishing industry, led to increased immigration from Europe, particularly Ireland. Representative government was introduced in 1832 and parliamentary government in 1855. The port of Heart's Content became the western terminus of the transatlantic cable in 1866. In 1869, Newfoundland voters rejected union with Canada; in 1895, after a disastrous fire in St. John's and the failure of local banks, negotiations to join Canada resumed but were unsuccessful. Relatively little attention had been paid to Labrador, but in 1895 iron ore was discovered in the Grand Falls (now Churchill Falls) region. As part of the Anglo-French Entente Cordiale of 1904, France abandoned the French Shore. Possession of Labrador was disputed by Quebec and Newfoundland until 1927, when the British privy council demarcated the western boundary, enlarged Labrador's land area, and confirmed Newfoundland's title to it. During the depression of the 1930s, Britain suspended Newfoundland's self-government and assumed administrative and financial control. Actual authority was exercised by a joint commission of Newfoundlanders and British. During World War II, U.S. and British military bases were established in Labrador and on Newfoundland.

Newfoundland, with a total area of 405,720 sq km (156,649 sq mi), is the seventh largest province in Canada; less than 1% of the land is owned by the federal government. The extreme dimensions of the island are 523 km (325 mi) from north to south and 515 km (320 mi) from east to west; extreme dimensions of the Labrador region are 1046 km (650 mi) from north to south and 724 km (450 mi) from east to west. Elevations range from sea level to 1622 m (5322 ft) atop Mount Caubvick (known as Mont D'Iberville Torngat Mountains in northern Labrador. The deeply indented shoreline totals 13,676 km (8498 mi) for the island and 15,286 km (9498 mi) for Labrador. The river shown to the left is Eclipse River, Labrador. The longest river is the Churchill in Labrador; with its tributaries it drains much of the Labrador Plateau. At Churchill Falls, the river drops some 75 m (some 245 ft); a large hydroelectric power project has appreciably diminished the flow over the falls. The major rivers draining the island are the Exploits, Gander, and Humber.

During World War II (1939-1945), the airport served as an Atlantic base for British, Canadian, and United States aircraft. The Air Control Center in Gander plays a major role in controlling flights over the North Atlantic. Gander was incorporated as a town in 1954. Photographs of Flotilla '99 BRIEF HISTORY The genesis for marina development really began with a document entitled " Proposed Park Port Development" which was prepared by the Town of Lewisporte in June of 1990. This document recommended in its plans for harbour development that "provision be made for completion of a small boat marina suitable for docking and storage of smaller vessels". Subsequent to the release of this report, the Lewisporte Area Development Association (LADA) formulated a proposal entitled " Lewisporte Marina Complex Study" which made a strong case for extensive marina development. The proposal was presented to the Newfoundland Government’s Department of Development in September of 1990. Preliminary Marina Master Plan , which was released in June, 1991, has been the primary guide in the subsequent development of the Marina Complex. In 1992 the Town of Lewisporte leased the present marina facility to the Lewisporte Yacht Club, a local incorporated body, for a period of five years. This volunteer organization was given first option to renew the lease at the end of each five year period. Since then the Yacht Club has spearheaded incremental development at the marina site with continued co-operation and support from the Town of Lewisporte and government. The first submission for funding was made by the Lewisporte Yacht Club in 1992. It was entitled, "
