Legend has it his wife, Hine-te-aparangi, named it Aotearoa , Land of the Long White Cloud. The legend continues that centuries later, around 1350 AD, a great migration of people from Kupe's homeland of Hawaiki followed his navigational instructions and sailed to New Zealand, eventually supplanting or mixing with previous residents. Their culture, developed over centuries without any discernible outside influence, was hierarchical and often sanguinary. In 1642, the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman briefly sailed along the west coast of New Zealand; any thoughts of a longer stay were thwarted when his attempt to land resulted in several of his crew being killed and eaten. In 1769, Captain James Cook circumnavigated the two main islands aboard the Endeavour . Initial contact with the Maoris also proved violent but Cook, impressed with the Maoris' bravery and spirit and recognising the potential of this newfound land, grabbed it for the British crown before setting sail for Australia. When the British began their antipodean colonising, New Zealand was originally seen as an offshoot of Australian enterprise in whaling and sealing: in fact, from 1839 to 1841 the country was under the jurisdiction of New South Wales. However, increased European settlement soon proved problematic: a policy was urgently required regarding land deals between the settlers (Pakeha) and the Maori. In 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, with the Maori ceding sovereignty of their country to Britain in exchange for protection and guaranteed possession of their lands. But relations between the Maori and Pakeha soon soured (the Maoris became increasingly alarmed at the effect the Pakeha had on their society while the Pakeha rode roughshod over Maori rights outlined in the treaty). In 1860, war broke out between them, continuing for much of the decade. The fighting eventually died down, and though there was no formal resolution, the Pakehas claimed victory.

    Extractions: Maori legend has it that Chief Kupe was the first to arrive in New Zealand from Hawaiki around 950 AD in his canoe called Maataa-hourua. He landed at Whanganui-a-tara (near Wellington). Upon seeing land he said "He ao, he aotea he aotearoa" It is a cloud ..a white cloud .. a long white cloud. In about 1150 Toi and Whatonga followed Kupu but it wasnt until about 1350 that great fleets of Maori arrived and settled. Tribal wars were very common, usually fighting over territory, they were immensely fierce in battle and in upon capturing their enemys they would often inslave them to be eaten later or to shrink their heads for trophies. Maori society is made up of tribes (iwi) furthur broken down to hapu (sub tribe) and whanau (Direct and extended family). The various hapu of New Zealand gather around a Marae which consists of a meeting house (whare hui), a dining hall (whare kai), and a grassy courtyard where speeches are delivered.

    Extractions: The first European to see New Zealand officially was the Dutch sailor, Abel Janszoon Tasman in December 1642 although there is evidence of Spanish or Portuguese caravels visiting the North Island in a earlier period. Maori war parties prevented Abel Tasman from actually landing initially but he is recorded as the first European to climb Mount Victoria in the Auckland harbour . In 1769-70 Captain James Cook circumnavigated and charted New Zealand. Initial contact with the Maori was also violent but in many areas his ship was welcomed and the scientific nature of his visit was carried out with his ship wintering over in the scenic Malbough Sounds. From 1839 to 1841, New Zealand was administered as part of the New South Wales colony. In 1840 the Maori ceded the sovereignty of New Zealand to the British in exchange for protection and guarantees on their land fearing colonisation by France. For almost 20 years however, there was intermittent fighting between different Maori tribes and colonists over disputes to land and trading rights. In 1860 British troops and native irregular troops were used to finally overcome Maori resistance to the British administration and land use.

A new wave of British, European and Australian migrants arrived to populate the towns and develop farmland.

Frenchmen, Englishmen and Italians also visited the country. Following the European publication of reports from all these people, the country was seen ripe for whalers, sealers, flax and timber traders, to exploit and plunder which they did. In this process questionable deals were done with Maori for guns, liquor and tobacco. Hundreds of ships a year visited New Zealand revealing to the Maori a rough side to the Europeans. In 1814 the first missionary Samuel Marsden arrived and he set up the initial Anglican mission stations followed by Wesleyans and Catholics. There was intense rivalry between the three sects, however there were some better points of European culture introduced such as agriculture.
