It is believed that the Polynesian navigator, Kupe was the first man to sight New Zealand around 950AD and then returned home to tell of his findings. Around 1350AD seven great migratory canoes (whaka) sailed from Hawaiki to New Zealand. They called the country Aotearoa, Land of the Long White Cloud , and quickly adapted to the cooler climate and spread throughout the country. Here they developed a culture quite distinct from the rest of the Pacific since the long distances and treacherous ocean conditions discouraged return voyages. The Maori have a close kinship with their environment, with legends and gods representing certain spheres, such as

Extractions: Maori History: The Maori people are the indigenous people of New Zealand. They are Polynesian and comprise about 8% of the country's population. Maoritanga is the native language which is related to Tahitian and Hawaiian. It is believed that the Maori migrated from Polynesia in canoes about the 9th century to 13th century AD. Dutch navigator Abel Tasman was the first European to encounter the Maori. Four members of his crew were killed in a bloody encounter in 1642. In 1769 British explorer James Cook established friendly relations with some Maori. By the 1800 visits by European ships were relatively frequent. In 1840 representatives of Britain and Maori chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi. This treaty established British rule, granted the Maori British citizenship, and recognized Maori land rights.

The literature consisted of history, tales, poems, and myths handed down by oral tradition. The indigenous art of New Zealand is also Maori. European settlers, particularly the English, brought with them their own traditions, which came to dominate the cultural life of the country. Since the 1950s significant numbers of Pacific Islanders, particularly Polynesians, have contributed to a growing ethnic diversity in New Zealand. More recently, greater diversity has been fostered by increased immigration from Asia since the mid-1980s. European cultural life has progressed rapidly since the early 20th century. Numerous writers were active in the late 19th century, the most successful of whom were historians, such as William Pember Reeves, and ethnologists, including S. Percy Smith and Elsdon Best. The work of the first genuinely original writers of fiction, the short-story writer Katherine Mansfield and the poet R.A.K. Mason, did not appear until the 1920s. During the harsh years of the Great Depression of the 1930s a group of poets appeared and established a national tradition of writing. Although influenced by contemporary English literatureT.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden were greatly respectedthey wrote about their New Zealand experience. The most notable member of this group was Allen Curnow. A.R.D. Fairburn, Denis Glover, and Charles Brasch were other major poets. At the same time Frank Sargeson began writing the superb stories in New Zealand vernacular for which he became well known.

In that year, the largest five sectors of the culture industry were word and data processors (42Â·2% of total cultural trade) radio, TV, and VCR (20Â·7%); music-related goods (10Â·6%); cinema and photography (8Â·1%); and books and pamphlets (6Â·7%). In 1996, New Zealanders spent NZ$62m. on the theatre, ballet and concerts. In May 2000, the Government injected a one-off NZ$86m. into the arts. The Ministry for Culture and Heritage, established in 1991, administers funding totalling NZ$100m. to cultural organizations, including NZ On Air; the national museum; the national symphony orchestra; the Historic Places Trust; the Royal NZ Ballet; Creative New Zealand; the national film commission; the Traditional Maori Performing Arts Society; and the national film archive. Other cultural organizations are assisted by the Lottery Grants Board, whose funding is administered by the Department of Internal Affairs. Creative New Zealand (the operating name for the Arts Council), set up in 1994, receives 85% of its funding from the Lottery Grants Board. Between 1998â99, it allocated grants worth some NZ$20m. Censorship is governed by the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993. It is managed by the Department of Internal Affairs, in conjunction with the police and customs.
