Extractions: by Ted DeCorte Immediately following the First World War (1914-1918), the United States experienced a brief yet hysterical "Red Scare," a fear of a radical communist, or bolshevik takeover of the United States. Fear of a radical takeover in the United States led to suppression and persecution of anyone perceived as "un-American." This era of intolerance and paranoia engulfed Nevada, and its citizens responded harshly to the "Red Menace." Nevada's response was both a part of and a reaction to the volatile national scene during 1919-1920. During the war years Americans encountered severe limitations on freedom of speech and press, as well as outright suppression of dissent. The federal government arrested over fifteen hundred persons for disloyal comments and banned the dissemination of radical publications. Opening and censoring private mail also became an effective tool for monitoring "pro-German" thoughts and deeds. Periodically the Administration seized obviously loyal magazines critical of government policy. In its zeal, the Justice Department, for instance, delayed an edition of The Nation because it carried the caption "Civil Liberties Are Dead," and confiscated copies of

WebRing drew its initial inspiration from a similar structure called EUROPa (Expanding Unidirectional Ring of Pages). Michael at newdream.net helped with initial graphic design. In August, 1995 Jerry Hierro suggested a centralized CGI program to run the system. The first new Ring created was the ESLoop. By the beginning of 1997, there were over 1,000 Rings on the system, and by May of that year 10,000. By April, 1998, there were over 40,000 Rings on WebRing. Extractions: April 21, 1998 Astute readers have noticed that at the end of every column, I point out that I am a fifth-generation Nevadan. Some people want to know why I bring this up on a weekly basis. The answer: It brings in the chicks by the truckload. No, I am just kidding, on several different levels. You should be able to guess that just from looking at my mug shot. Seriously, I point it out for several different reasons. The first is that being a fifth-generation Nevadan is very, very rare these days. It means that my great-great grandfather lived here. Heck, these days, even being a second-generation Nevadan is fairly rare, considering the state is growing faster than certain parts of President Clinton when the Budweiser girls are around. The main reason I point it out is that I feel it gives me a sort of special connection to and understanding of the state at least the Northwestern part, which much of my family has called home for decades. For example, on my Dad's side of the family, my great-grandfather and my grandfather (along with several of his brothers) worked in Virginia City, when it was really a city. One of my great uncles was a book publisher, giving me the only real publishing/writing link that I know of in my family. My grandfather, who is still going strong at 88, has only a fourth-grade education; he had to drop out of school to help support his family by working in the mines. Keeping all this in mind, I have a much greater appreciation for Virginia City.

Extractions: Boys Hope Girls Hope of Nevada History Recognizing the importance of Boys Hope Girls Hope s mission and the tremendous need for service in Las Vegas, Greg McKinley and five other community leaders began working in 1994 to secure a home and the funding necessary for the initial start-up of a local affiliate. Boys Hope Girls Hope of Nevada officially opened its doors for at-risk, academically capable young boys in July of 1997. Patrick (age 9) and Matthew (age 15) were the first boys to enter the program. Over the next several months the house became filled to capacity with the addition of brothers Da Vaun and Willie in September, Jamie in October and Anthony in January of 1998. Anthony, the first high school graduate of the program (2000) has begun his junior year at St. John s University in Minnesota with a study abroad program in China. Matthew, class of 2001, is pursuing his studies at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. Following their lead, Da Vaun has enrolled in St. John s University in New York, beginning in September 2002. All three of these students remain closely connected to the Boys Hope Girls Hope family in Las Vegas.

Extractions: Advertising Information Nevada City was originally called Deer Creek Dry Diggins when it was just a mining camp. In the fall of 1849 Dr. A.B. Caldwell opened a general store and the mining camp started resembling a town. The town became Caldwell's Upper Store. In 1850, the town was looking more like a city, with a cities' problems. The citizens, under Mexican law, elected a mayor, or "Alcalde," to establish and keep order. After the initial gold rush, merchants, bankers and the like came to Nevada City and built homes in the style of the day. This was during the reign of Queen Victoria, and that style of architecture became known as "Victorian". Colonial, Greek Revival, and "California Gothic" styles of architecture are well represented here as well. Most of Nevada City burned to the ground on several occasions. Two of the most interesting buildings in the downtown area are fire houses that were built with more than utilitarian style. This also accounts for the prevalance of brick buildings featuring iron shutters.
