Extractions: Atmospheric Tests A s a small boy, scientists, jet pilots, and Captain Midnight were my heros; airplanes, rocket sleds, atoms and astronomy were some of my amazements. I had a nice collection of model planes and rockets. I loved the rockets aerodynamic shapes and the pictures of their fiery takeoffs. Of course I had no idea of the weapon their full-sized counterpart had been designed to carry nor anything of its power. That is, until 4:30 a.m. on a dark summer morning in 1957. We were returning from a visit with my grandparents in California, riding in my uncle's 1956 Oldsmobile. He had decided to drive at night to avoid the hot desert sun of Death Valley. Unknown to us the Nevada Test Site was just behind us on our left. Suddenly, a startling, unknown, gigantic brilliance lit up the darkness, growing much brighter than the friendly noon-day sun, and now, instead of darkness, as far as you could see into the distance, everything was lit up with a stark whiteness. The desert was now completely visible, cactus, bushes, sand. I could see mountains off in the distance and they were lit up. We tried quickly to understand what was happening. My uncle Harlan thought it might be a UFO. They had been in the news and this light was far beyond anything in our experience. I looked up thinking it must be right above of the car. As the light began to fade away, we saw that the dawn was beginning. We turned on the radio hoping for some information. Sure enough, in a few minutes an announcement was made that the U.S. Army had tested an atomic weapon, one in a series of tests at the Nevada Test Site.

Freelance writer Lynn Ferrin offers a vivid description of Carson City by quoting Mark Twain: "By and by Carson City was pointed out to us," wrote Mark Twain in Roughing It. "It nestled in the edge of a great plain and was a sufficient number of miles away to look like an assemblage of mere white spots." The mountain summits overlooking it, he noted, "seemed lifted clear out of companionship and consciousness of earthly things." Twain arrived in 1861, but Nevadas capital still looks the same way to a visitor driving over from Lake Tahoea town dominated by its setting. The early morning sun lights up the great eastern scarp of the Sierra Nevada; the setting sun sets afire the Pine Nut Mountains out in the Great Basin Desert. The nights are full of stars, the air scented with sage. Prior to 1969, Carson City was a part of Ormsby County. In 1969 Ormsby County was merged into Carson City to consolidate government services. Carson City is a consolidated municipality. There are now nine state capitals with smaller populations than Carson City, and in fact, with its area of 143.5 square miles, Carson City can now advertise itself as one of the largest state capitals in America!

The Capitol's prominent silver dome is Carson City's most visible landmark and has been a symbol of Nevada's government since its completion in 1870. Nevada passed from a territory to statehood in four short years, 1861-1864. On display are the wine glasses Territorial Governor James W. Nye and Carson City founder Abe Curry used to toast the success of the new state. Also on view is a thirty-six star U.S. flag commemorating the Silver State's recognition as the thirty-sixth state to join the Union. Nevada's government has evolved in this building, where state officials have had their offices and the senate and assembly once met. On view is one of the original legislative desks purchased in 1871. Also in place is the elk horn chair of Nevada Governor John Sparks, the honorary chair used by President Teddy Roosevelt when he was welcomed to the capital as the Hero of San Juan in 1903. Governor Emmet Boyle, the first native Nevadan to hold the honor, signed the resolution supporting the Nineteenth Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. A replica of his office as it was in 1920 is contained in this exhibit.
