The Gurkha principality was later established by RAJPUT warriors from India, and in 1769 they conquered lands beyond the present-day borders of Nepal. After incursions into northern India in which the Gurkhas were defeated, Nepal lost part of its territory to British India but retained its independence and enjoyed close ties with the British. It has maintained its close association with India since the latter gained independence in 1947.Nepal, the world's only Hindu monarchy, was controlled by a hereditary prime ministership until 1951. The nation's first election was held in 1959, but in 1960, King Mahendra dismissed the cabinet, dissolved parliament, and banned political parties. A 1962 constitution created a nonparty panchayat (council) system of government. After a 1980 referendum approved a modified version of the panchayat system, direct parliamentary elections were held in 1981. A dispute with India led to India's closing of most border crossings from March 1989 to July 1990, and the resultant economic crisis fuelled demands for political reform. After months of violence, King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev dissolved parliament. The opposition formed an interim government in April 1990, and a new constitution creating a constitutional monarchy and a bicameral legislature became effective on Nov. 9, 1990.

That is understandable in a country which has seen the communist groupings split, merge and split again so many times that only an acute observer will be able to navigate this history with ease. The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) itself was no different and given that the left centre-stage since the restoration of democracy in 1990 had been dominated by the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), the Maoist party (and its earlier reincarnations) was perceived as just one among the conglomeration of factions that spanned the political spectrum from the CPN-UML onward to the extreme left. Late 1960s The origins of today's Maoists go back to the late 1960s. Following King Mahendra's seizure of state power in 1960 after arresting the cabinet and dissolving the elected parliament, all political parties were banned. Within the Communist Party of Nepal, there emerged two groups: one that preferred to work together with the king and the other that demanded the restoration of parliament. That difference of opinion was later formalised with a split that reflected the Sino-Soviet rift, with the pro-king faction allied to Moscow and the other to Peking. Despite the ban, like other political parties, the communist grouping opposed to the monarchy continued functioning, but given the prohibition in place, various local units had begun to operate independently.

In 1854, Nepal again invaded Tibet, which was forced to pay tribute from then until 1953. Under the Ranas, Nepal was deliberately isolated from foreign influences; this policy helped to maintain independence during the colonial period but prevented economic and social modernization. Relations with Britain were cordial, however, and in 1923 a British-Nepalese treaty expressly affirmed Nepal's full sovereignty. Nepal supplied many troops for the British army in both world wars. The successful Indian movement for independence (1947) stimulated democratic sentiment in Nepal. The newly formed Congress party of Nepal precipitated a revolt in 1950 that forced the autocratic Ranas to share power in a new cabinet. King Tribhuvan Bir Bikram, who sympathized with the democratic movement, took temporary refuge in India and returned as a constitutional monarch. In 1959 a democratic constitution was promulgated, and parliamentary elections gave the Congress party a clear majority. Prior to 1989, Nepal maintained a position of nonalignment in foreign affairs, carefully balancing relationships with China, the USSR, the United States, and India. The USSR and the United States were major aid donors. A 1956 treaty with China recognized Chinese sovereignty over Tibet and officially terminated the century-old Tibetan tribute to Nepal; all Nepalese troops left Tibet in 1957. The Sino-Nepalese border treaty of 1961 defined Nepal's Himalayan frontier.

From the 8th-11th century many Buddhists fled to Nepal from India, and a group of Hindu Rajput warriors set up the principality of Gurkha just west of the Katmandu valley. Although a Newar dynasty, the Mallas, ruled the valley from the 14th-18th century, there were internecine quarrels among local rulers. Com. Man Mohan Adhikari had presented political Report in the Congress. Along with the adoption of Political Report, the First Congress elected Com. Adhikari as the General Secretary. The Second Congress The Second National Congress of CPN was organized openly in Fohara Palace of Kathmandu in June 1957. The document 'Why Change in party-programme?' presented by Rayamajhi was rejected by the 2nd congress and the slogan of republican programme was passed. Draft of the major points of programme presented by Puspa Lal was also adopted by the congress and it was decided that complete draft of the program would be prepared and issued by Central Committee. Although the Congress rejected Rayamajhi-line of thought, leadership was controlled by Rayamajhi-group and hence Rayamajhi was elected General Secretary. He, in a planned manner, indirectly rejected the program and tactics adopted by the Second Congress. The decision of the Second Congress to organize party congress in a two-year interval had been postponed for 6 years by Rayamajhi group on the basis of central committee majority.

Thus, it was in the Kirati period that Nepal seemed to have first come in contact with the Buddhist religion and culture that flowed from India.

G of those days were Rana Generals like, Gen Babar Shumsher and Gen Lava Shumsher. It is believed that they had 18 holes at that time, with sand and oil/tar based greens (so called browns). Some golf tournaments were initiated at that time. Mid 1920’s The Lava cup was started in mid 1920's. The golf course at Gaucharan got shortened once airplanes started landing in Kathmandu as the runway occupied half of it's land. Those days even King Tribhuwan and members of the Royal family used to play golf occasionally. Prince Basundhara was a keen golfer. Late 50’s Gen Kiran Shumsher established the same golf course by naming it Gauchar Golf Club. 5/Sep/1965 Gauchar Golf Club received Royal patronage from King Mahendra; the Club was inaugurated, and since then it has been named Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC). Prince Basundhara became president and held presidency until 1978. Golfers in those days were mostly expatriates, diplomats and from the Shah and Rana families. Late 60’s Dharan Country Club was established by British Gorkhas in Dharan. The course had 9 holes and grass greens (not browns).

Modern Nepal is an amalgamation of a number of principalities which had independent entities in the past. Before the campaign of national integration launched by King Prithivi Narayan Shah the Kathmandu Valley was ruled by the Malla Kings, whose contribution to art and culture are indeed great. In the Kathmandu Valley were the Gopalas, the Abhiras and were succeeded by the Thakuris and Mallas. In 1768 A.D. the Shah dynasty ascended the throne of this unified kingdom . His Majesty King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev is the twelth king in the 225 year old Shah dynasty. The revolution of November 1950 brought to an end of Rana regime who ruled the country for 104 years since 1846 A.D. After the fall of Rana regime in Feb, 1951, Nepal saw the dawn of democracy. The parliamentary government under the multi-party system was adopted for some years which was followed by Panchayat System since 1960. The popular democratic revolt of 1990 has reinstated the multi party democratic system since April. The new democratic constitution of the Kingdom was promulgated on November 9, 1990.

One legend holds that this lake was drained by a thunderbolt thrown against the walls of the Valley by the Hindu god Krishna. Another claims it was drained by the patriarch Manjushri as he wanted to get a closer look at a Swayambhu or Adhi-buddha, the beautiful lotus flower resting on the lake. But the recorded history of Nepal does not start until around 800 BC, with the beginning of the Kirat Period.
